Am fed up with paying the high prices for phone and internet from my current provider, especially as my connection speed is below 2MB.

I'm looking at the following 2 providers and their integrated broadband and phone packages: Sky and TalkTalk

Does anyone have experience of either and could you let me know what you think of them for both broadband and phone please. Many thanks.

If it's Tiscali you're with call them and request a MAC code - I did that and they upped my package from the 2mb one to the 8mb one and dropped the price down to £4.99 a month :woot:

Thanks guys for comments so far...

It's BT i'm with at the moment. Have heard that TalkTalk are now top of the league for service but dont know how true that is in reality.

Am open to all ideas, to be honest, so would be interested in views on Tiscali too

I have been with NTL now Virgin Media for many years, with excellent service and a flying 20MB connection speed. They have been very good over the years.

Have you considered The Utility Warehouse?

up to 24 mbps (8 at the mo, soon to be 24 depending on area) £19.99 including line rental. 2nd in the recent Which? broadband survey (and top in the energy supplied survey).

Also lots of opportunity to obtain huge discounts on all utilities.

we are with virgin and have the ultimate pack which gives all virgin chanels plus all sky chanels and our phone is free at most peak times and we get 20mb broadband thats being doubled before xmas all for 95 quid a month but you do need to be a customer for a set period to get this I think

moved over to sky about a month back (£5 plus taking a free calls package) ontop of the tv package we already had. not had a problem with them at all. in total i think we pay just over £25 for the lot which i think is a bargain considering prior to that i was paying £25 just for internet

Been with sky broadband for a year (8mbit package) now and never had a problem with them. I made up the combination package, you decide what you want. Broadnand up to 8 mbit, in my case 7 mbit. tv package knowledge pack (discovery/history/geographic channels) Style Culture channel for the wife (house makeovers/magazine type programs) and of course bbc.itv programs as usual.
We also took the unlimited sky talk deal, unlimited uk national calls. Not stricly unlimited but if you hang up at 59 mins then ring back you wont pay any charges. Line rental we left with BT. All for £28.00 per month, worked out cheaper than Virgin and Pipex my previous ISP.

Sky+ box will cost you 99 quid one off payment.

Only downside is I notice some channels that were free on Freeview, Sky charges for them, however if you have a Freeview box you can leave it connected for these channels.

I'm going to be brassnecked here and first greedy sod in the queue :lol:if you decide on Sky then Recommending a friend ...Ahem! me perhaps gets them a £50.00 M&S voucher and according to their ad you get a free Sky+ box.

forgot to say ...in this package we get V+ in every room except the bog but if we want its a five min job to get it in there to but would you want to watch tv or email whilst you are errrrrrr loggin off

My brother had weeks of grief from Tiscali when he moved house and they kept charging him for the old line. It got to within hours of the bailiffs knocking on his door.

And a friend also had nothing but trouble from Talktalk when moving house which again took weeks to sort out and get running.

I've had Plusnet for years and they have given me no trouble whatsoever.

Find out what BT's new rate is, then find out what someone else is offering, then ring BT and ask what they'll offer to match.

We do this every now and then with our ISP and generally we get pretty decent packages that we probably shouldn't. There's no harm in asking!

dammit you got me thinkin of a wifi tv and k/b fot the dunny

I'd run a mile from Tiscali. I am with freedom2surf who got bought by pipex who themselves got bought by tiscali.
I've found out I've been moved to tiscali LLU (that'd explain the disconnects, slow speeds etc then). Note this was done without my knowledge or permission. Last night I've lost everything, theres not even a broadband service to sync with.

Found an ISP I want to move to (ADSL24), only problem is its going to cost me £40+VAT to get off of tiscali LLU and back on to IPStream. Impressed ? no, not really.

So I've either got to swallow a £47 charge to get back to IPStream (that I paid for originally incidentally) or find an LLU provider that is a) worth my time and b) dont charge for a migration. I'm going to complain like hell but seeing other peoples dealings with tiscali I may as well talk to a brick wall.

I have been scratching around and it seems if you want cheap go the sky route, am currently looking at Be(www.bethere.co.uk) butcan't figure out if they have a migration charge.

I took a punt and migrated to AOL from Orange. It's been interesting getting sorted (all dates missed but early) and all correspondence messy but the connection I have to say is superb. My free laptop is still to be delivered so expect to see that in the classifieds in a week or two. Costwise it was just a phone call, same costs per month.

Thanks everyone, some more interesting stuff there so far...

It sounds like a no for Tiscali then, I have to say their webiste is a nightmare to navigate.

An unknown for talktalk, will wait to see if any actual users can rate them (or not) as well

And it looks like Sky is a positive so far. Sorry though Frank, I already have Sky+, otherwise would have been very happy to use the recomend deal for you.

I'm with talk talk....had teething problems initially but none now :)

Talk Talk would have to improve a thousand fold before I ever considered going back to them!!, from experience the most incompetent bunch I have ever had the displeasure of dealing with.
I did have the pleasure of taking them through the ombudsman process after they were about to send in the bailiffs. They continued to bill me for their lousy service despite numerous calls, and ignored letters, six months after I left them for BT!!!.
They had to pay me £100 compensation.

You will not get a higher speed than that which the line will support.
This will tell you what your line will support http://www.speedtester.bt.com/
The only way to get a higher speed than that indicated in the test result is if you were to go cable.

Tiscali are an incompetent bunch off ******. It would take to long to go through the grief they gave my parents but they make Virgin/NTLs support team look like Supermen.

They even managed to disconnect / lose my parents phone number while they tried & failed to set up their broadband !

I agree, Virgin media is very good. Download speeds of 1.1mbps

Thank you everyone....

Looks like Tiscali and TalkTalk ruled out then.

Anyone else with Sky ?

I am on Sky and I am about to call them and reduce my BB package. I am payng £10 pm for 16M but rarely get anything over 2M speed so I dont know why I am paying for it.

The probelm is with any provider except NTL who have their own cable, the speed is limited to the capacity of the local exchange/network which is pretty much under the control of BT. Thats the way I understand it anyway.

If you have NTL in your area and you want the speed then they are the only ones who can really give it to you - and I hate to admit that becuase I hate them

the onlyproblem with sky is the long phone calls that get you nowhere fast when you have a problem, other than that its quite good.
