I could be wrong but maybe he was mentally committed to buying the new kit and didn't like the idea that people were perhaps trying to point him in other directions and therefore appearing to questioning his choice.

I've looked through the thread and that seems a reasonable analysis.
 
If the dude lives 30 mins from Ffordes there is cracking landscapes around there - which leads me to the A7RII or A7RIII suggestion.

More MP is usually useful and these camera's focus fine. Me, I'd suggest the 645z and 28-45 zoom kit Ffordes have for sale. Skip full frame and go straight to medium format :D

I don't think he liked having his lack of ability & understanding as a photographer pointed out so plainly, and as you say he'd already committed to buying new kit too and was seeking confirmation. C'est la vie.
