Evenin' all,

Off to Ilfracombe for a week with my wife and 6 month old son on Saturday.

Looking for things to do / places to go in the area, lets say places within 30 minutes to an hours drive. Where's worth going?

Avoid the monstrous bronze "sculpture" on the harbour.

Clovelly is nice to visit, but there's a charge.

There are some great beaches down there. I went on a photo trip with a friend last year. We stayed near Rockham Bay :

Croyde beach sticks out in my mind as a nice sandy beach (I've only got pebbles round my way), oh and there's great fudge shop near to the weird statue in Ilfracombe harbour.

Yes!
You can watch them make it! :-)

I stayed there earlier in the "summer" with my little girl and her mum, we visited the dinosaur/wildlife park which we all really enjoyed, did a trip to Woolacombe beach and bars which was cool as well, also really liked ambling round Barnstaple.
We had three meals in the Bluebird bar and restaurant, opposite the pavilion. Their steak was very very good if that's your sort of thing, Fudgies opposite St James church with their 65 varieties of fudge grrr, was another place I went into three times while we were there ;-) the weather wasn't that kind to us so didn't really get to explore as much as we would normally.

+1 for the dinosaur park, prepared to get wet though!
Also a bit further away is Monkey world and the Tank museum

The Valley of Rocks near Lynton is well worth a visit as is the Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway

Thought if that as well.

Lynton village
Part of Lynton & Barnstaple railway reopened
Exmoor
Writer Henry Williamson - Not sure whether his hut, built by himself as a studio and is now a grade 2 listed building has public access

Cheers, Clovelly added to the list of possible visits.

lundy trip?

Is it suitable for a pushchair! We have a 6 month old tagging along..

Not been there in over 30yrs. but I'd recommend trips to Woolacombe, if the weather's nice anyway.

We are staying very near to Woolacombe, in Mortehoe. So will definitely be seeing lots of that beach. Thanks.

Not too far away near Lynton is Watersmeet, a wonderful place I've always thought.

Thanks Cartus, added to the list.

Great picture, looks an interesting beach to photograph. I'm bringing my tripod and filters, so hopefully some good sunsets. How easy is the walk down to the beach? Suitable for pushchairs?

And thanks for the tip on the fudge shop, I don't generally like sweets, but love fudge!

I used to go there a lot as a kid. Apparently Ford used it quite regularly to make adverts for their cars being driven atmospherically on the beach!

I'll see if I can recreate the shot with my old diesel!

Barnstaple added to list, cheers Al.

The staircase down to the beach was closed when we went - one part had collapsed on to the beach due to a landslide! We were a bit naughty and went over the barrier and worked our way down - fine for adventurous adults, a definite no for kids. A year on, I'd expect that it's been fully repaired to the latest standards, so hopefully a doddle to get up and down - its probably around 100ft vertical, so plenty of stairs! The last update on the NT website is from March - http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/woo...be/visitor-information/article-1355891222845/ - maybe a quick call to them before making a special trip would be a good idea.

The fudge shop do a vast range of flavours, and it was beautifully packaged - I got some as gifts for Mrs HJ and my parents, as well as a little for myself.
