Thieves strike - sad times

Thats a real shame :(:shake:

it's like someone robbing you on christmas day, lowest of the low

What surprised me though was this:

He said the thieves were ‘low,’ but that what mattered most was getting the cards and messages back.

It’s not so much the money but the lovely cards – those little messages people say at weddings.

How many of us even still have the cards from our wedding day? It was nice to read them on the day but we threw all of ours away. We have a book where people wrote messages in, we didn't care to keep all the wedding cards. I would be more upset about the fact that they took £2000 worth of cash and gifts.

Dunno about opportunists, I've often thought this is an easy target (even at my own wedding in March).

Most people will have a gift table/card box at their reception, somewhere near the entrance where guests can easily deposit gifts/cards when they arrive.

A would-be thief could wait until 11pm when most people have had a shandy or two too many and not really paying too much attention, pick up the card box and walk out with it.

Bearing in mind that a lot of people these days go for cash gifts it could be a nice little earner! But also a sad reflection of society that it would seem nothing is sacred any more :(

What a nightmare. So the guests will be interviewed, that'll be awkward.

I still have all of our cards and have them in a photo album as well as having a guest book. Both of those and our photo albums are kept in the dresser and I get them all out every now and again - probably 2 or 3 times a year to have a look. Quite a few of our cards were handmade and people took the time to write a nice message in all the cards so I think that is reason enough for me to keep them

There really must be opportunists everywhere :(

Sadly you are right and they will often go to any lengths, one of my customers staff had his expensive bikes taken from his garage ... they ripped the asbestos roof off! :cuckoo:

my mate told me a story once about a woman he knew - on her wedding day they had the reception etc.. and the happy couple left for their honeymoon at the end of the night. The father of the bride had a wad of cash in his jacket to pay the hotel and when he went to get it, there was nothing there. All the guests ended up chipping in to settle the bill and the bride was distraught.

While the couple were away on honeymoon the parents viewed the video of the wedding... on it they saw the bridegroom helping himself to the cash from the jacket!! Obviously the guy videoing had no clue that it wasn't his jacket!!

Not sure how long the marriage lasted after that :nono:

Ouch!

Thieves have no conscience, simple as that.

And sadly in a lot of cases due to authority apathy (thats not a blanket on the whole police system just highlighting that there are a lot that don't give a toss), they never really pay their dues or even get chased or caught.

And its really difficult to put a price on things, like a gift from your nan who's on her last legs, can be worth £5 or £5000 but its the fact its from your nan that matters.

My garage was broken in to about 2 years back, everything was invisibly tagged, and best of all was visible in the front garden of the thieving *****s 2 doors up!

Only answer I got straight from the mouth of the officer was: what do you want me to do about it?

And a few months later when it died down and was going to call in a "favour" the buggers got tagged for breaking in to an MP's garage!

As you've guessed, despise thieves.

Probably more common than you think, we had a similar thing at a family wedding, a couple wandered into the reception and helped themselves to unattended cameras and purses.

The irony was that most of the guests were police officers

It happened at my wedding, we lost hundreds of pounds worth of gift vouchers, cheques and cash.

You just don't let it get you down.

Was the loss of the cards more important or did you miss the cash more?

You don't miss what you never had, we felt more hurt for the people who gave us the gifts, they lost it all apart from any cheques which were cancelled.

But they had lost it anyway since yet were giving it away.

in a weird way nobody lost out. They had already lost the money and you didn't miss what you didn't have

Lol

Not really Joe as some of the items were gift vouchers for a certain department store that was to help buy something for the household.

Most gift vouchers are untraceable....we learned the hard way.

Ditto to our engagement cards.
They're all filed away in an album along with some pressed flowers from the table arrangements and I still get them out from time to time to look at.

All the gifts are long gone - either used up or worn out by now, so I think it's fair to say that the cards have far more importance to me than the gifts or money could ever have.

so then you did miss what you didn't have really.

I wondered that too

No.....why are you continuing this line of interrogation?

I can just see you like this:

No, you just seem to contradict yourself and I was confused, it's no biggy if you feel interogated I'll leave it there. Don't worry I won't be getting the pliers!!!!:lol:

I guess people find sentiment in different things.

For us we had cash from everyone and used it to pay towards our honeymoon in thailand. I certainly would have missed that and the experiences, memories and photos more than pieces of card with words written on them.

If we had spent the money on pots, pans and kettles etc then I might not feel the same way

You say I contradicted myself, I say I didn't.

Maybe you read too much into what folk write down.

I always change paragraph when changing the subject matter, maybe that is where you have a problem differentiating with some posts. I am allowed to post variables in a thread.

RIGHT!!!!!

Where are those pliers!!!!!

:D:D

My wife's go a whole box/basket type thing full of our wedding cards and a whole load of other sentimental wedding crap she wants to keep.

I just see it all as an unecessary waste of space!

To you it might be but to her it isn't. I'm sure she probably feels the same about some of your things ;)

I have no doubt at all that you're completely and utterly right there!

And whenever my husband calls our wedding stuff "crap", I put one of his favourite cd's or one of his socks in a safe place :D

One person's crap is another person's treasure...

Annoys him no end
