Hi,

I’ve just received an email from a company in London who would like to use one of my images ...... the thing is that ive never had a request like this before and im not really sure what I should be saying back

Here's the email

Re- Castleford Bridge Images

Dear J

I am writing to request the use of one of your images on
Flickr.
I work for the lighting design company who designed and
specified the lighting for Castleford Bridge and came
across your image. We feel the image would be a perfect
compliment for use in a project that we are currently
compiling. I therefore write to you to request permission
for its use.
Thank you for your time and hope to hear from you soon,

Kind regards,

Giancarlo Branquinho

So what should I say ?? Do I ask for a fee ??

I do have a note on my flickr acc saying that all the images are owned by me and if anyone would like to use them then please contact me ..... so at least they did that lol

Any help would be greatly appreciated

J

My point of view would be, they are a company, using it for commercial stuff, so make them pay if they want to use it. Don't let them make you feel like they are doing you a favour because they want to use it.

Thats a fair point.

Ive just been looking on their website and they have done some massive projects like St Pauls Cathedral !!

as it is not clear exactly what they want to use the image for ie their webpage, advertising or to show their clients i would email back asking exactly what usage they want the pic for if its advertising etc i would be inclined to charge a bit more.

Well when you find out, just post here and I'm sure you'll get all the help you need.

Cheers.

I’ve just emailed backing asking which one and what they intend to use it for ....... let’s see :D

I have a reply

Hi J,

We were hoping to use the image titled Castleford's New Bridge and
Castleford Bridge - River Aire.

We are working on a large scale project involving a number of bridges and
would be grateful if you would allow us the use of these 2 images to
provide example of previous bridge projects undertaken by us.

Kind regards,

Giancarlo Branquinho

It's still not exactly clear how they want to use it.

Congrats, must be a nice feeling!

Can we have a look at the image?

I'd reply saying something along the lines of 'Can you please confirm the media and timelines for which you are wishing to use the images, I can then get back to you with the licensing terms and fee'

Email them back and ask them how long they need a licence for so you can calculate a cost for a quote. That will force them to show their hand. If they are looking for a freebie, they will either pull out, or try whine about not using it for commercial gain. If they pull out, let them (giving you pics out free is not a wise option). If they whine, stick to your guns and explain that it's clear they are looking to use it to promote their business which will potentially bring in future revenue's, and as a photographer, it's only fair they pay you for the service of providing advertising material.

EDIT: Foggy beat me to it :agree:

Agree with Foggy & Neo.

JBOB: check Alamy.com by selecting an image and pricing for different uses.

Thanks for the advice guys :D

I’ve emailed back with basically what Foggy said ...... So ill just wait and see how badly they want them

I’ve just looked on Alamy.com and it’s quite expensive !!!!

Good on you! You'll soon find out how serious they want them, if you get what I mean

Funnily enough I received an email via my website from someone looking to purchase an image for single use in a company newsletter, not been in this situation either! If it's any help to you this is what I sent back:

Thank you for contacting me.

I'd be grateful if you could let me know...

a) The size of the image that will be represented in your publication (e.g. 1/4 page or smaller, 1/2 page, full page, front cover etc. etc.)
b) Your estimated number of copies distributed / size of your target audience
c) If you would be able to provide creditation to the photographer
d) The image size in pixels that is required upon delivery, and whether you would like it to arrive sharpened or unsharpened by myself
e) The name of your publication and the anticipated publication date
f) Your expected method for receipt of the image (i.e. sent by email or posted on a cd)

....and then I'll get back to you with a quote for single use.

Again, thank you for your interest and I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards

etc.

- Then find similar images on alamy/getty and see how much they go for when certain criteria is selected.

There is a similar image to mine on alamy where the fee is £75, based on this and depending on their requirements I'll probably quote about £30-£40 seeing as I don't have to pay any commission.

It seems them still want both pictures :D

Hi J

We'e looking to use one as a thumbnail in a printed report (so for that
publication there will be no specific time limit, and as castleford bridge
is a former project of ours, we would also like to use both images on our
website. How much would we be talking in that case?

Thank you,

Giancarlo

:woot:

I’ve just been looking on alamy and one high res picture of Castleford footbridge during the day (there are no night time shots on there and this Co did the lighting !!) to be used on the web on a secondary page for a year is £275

I’ve no idea what to charge

I'd throw a quote of £300 in there, for thumbnail use on report, and reproduction on company website, with photographer accreditation, no time limits on specified use.

Or sell them an unlimited-use license for the 2 images - as much as you dare ask, but no less than £750...

Another way of looking at it is how much would they have to pay for a photographer to go and get the shots they wanted, along with the hassles, of timescales, editing, post-processing, tweaking etc.

Im going to have a think about this tonight and then get back to them.

It is funny how problems are not always associated with the lack of money/time (remember how you sweated when the gas bill needed paying?).

I am pleased the you have this problem and keen to see how it is resolved. Well done!

Chris

Well done fella, hope it all goes through etc for you.

It's good of them to ask for permission.

I would charge: website, world wide, plus brochure, 3 years, £650 with credit, £950 without.

Congrats, btw

Why not ask to become theeee companies photographaaaargh - you obviously enjoy shooting theee stuff they be makin, they like your style, could be an "nice little earnaaargh", and give you some good shots - say you will offer a rebate on these shots if they use you to snap for them - if they don't take you up then you will still get the booty, and they do you get more peices of eight aarggh!

Lawrie

(when a newbie looks back on this thread, they will be puzzled by the lingo, d'ya reckon, aarrggh!)

If you were on Alamy you'd get 60% of the fee - so charge a MINIMUM of 60% of what Alamy say!

Well, it appears that the company doesn't want to pay out for a photographer to do a days work on the bridge, so if you do charge them, make sure its less than the going rate for a photographer (not sure how much that is).

Them being lazy I suppose.

The other option, could be to let them use it for free, but ask for them to reffer clients to you for future images/ask them if you could work for them n the future. I don't think this would be the best idea though.

Going rate for a day £400 +

NO NO NO - not for free - they'll promise you all sorts of things and the result will be ZILCH. If it's of value to them they'll pay for it.

Sorry for the delay lol

I sent an email back to them yesterday with a price for accreditation, no time limits on specified use (website, report etc etc) and one for unlimited usage !!!!

I’ve also enquired about doing some work in the future for them .......... lets just see how this all pans out :D

A couple of months ago my girlfriend convinced me to give up work and do the 3 year Photography degree at my local Uni (Huddersfield) I had the interview and was accepted on my portfolio :cuckoo:

Id been feeling a bit nervous about doing the course and giving up work but this has really boosted my confidence !! ........... no going back now really as today was my last day at work and I start Uni on Monday :D
