Thethering to Macbook?

Hi guys,

Have a Mac for home use but over the past few months I've felt the need to have something on the go - so that I can work/transfer images as I shoot (using 5DMII). What's a good option out there? 15" screen is looking likely (as the 17" is a bit much) : much between the 15-inch: 2.2 GHz and 15-inch: 2.4 GHz? £300 in the difference which is quite a bit.

When you say thethering do you mean using a mobile phone device giving you an Internet access?

Going back to size 17" are big devices
 
I shoot tethered from my canon 1Ds onto a 15" MacBook pro via a usb cable into Lightroom. The 15" screen is fine for what I do which is mainly interior shots.

As far as models are concerned I don't think you are going to see a great deal of difference in performance , as the main time consumer will be the transfer to the camera via the cable.

My MacBook pro is currently a 4 year old model with a core 2 processor, and it's fast enough for tethered shooting.

Also I'd wait for a little while as there are rumors ( and I stress rumors) of a new MacBook Pro being announced in June. with allegedly Retina Display, similar to that on the 4s iPhone and iPad 3. Plus USB 3 support.

If you are using wireless then you aren't really tethered ;), but I get you point.

Being a Canon user I don't know if Nikon do a wireless adapter for your camera, if they do then it's probably going to around the same price as the Canon ones at about £700.

The other alternative would be to use a WiFi SD card. Now I've tried them and after a day struggling to get it to lock onto a network I gave up and sent it back. And this was the Pro version as well. Other members here may have had better experience than I have

If you opt for the WiFi card option then you will need a network for it to work with. If you are near you own internet WiFi network then you could use this. However if you are away from this you can get the Mac to host an Ad Hoc network. It's simply done as an option in the network selection on the Mac's top task bar.

Now as I said I had problems with the WiFi card on a normal network so I can't say how it would work using the Mac's Ad Hoc
 
I quiet often shoot tethered to a 15-inch: 2.2 GHz without any real speed issues, its the quality of the USB connection rather then processor speed which slows things down a little. Personally I'd save the £300.

If you''re shooting wirlessly you'll need a WT-4b which are about £600 new or can normally be had for £350-400 on evil bay
