Lot's of aircraft requesting weather avoidance on the scanner!!

Been watching it for last 45 minutes at rugby club, superb, the sky was purple and bolts coming from everywhere.

Ripped off yet again
hissing down but no rumbles or lightning :(

Just been sat down on the beach at Pett Level (near Hastings) and the display was absolutely incredible! Never seen a storm like that before

Wasn't that spectacular here in Pompey.
A few nice flashes and rumbles, but it was heading East very quickly.

Was going to do a weather heads up yesterday but work and other stuff got in the way, and then I got distracted by a HUUUUUGE storm we had last night! It lasted 1 hour and 30 minutes and gave 25.6 mm (an inch in old money) of rain in the space of half an hour.
Have managed to get some captures using my D40.

Here, there was that strange "Close Encounter Of The Third Kind" effect as lightning flickered at the rate of one every two seconds INSIDE this thick cloud layer. I half expected a mothership to come emerging down from the base of that cloud cover!

After 45 minutes of that, then eventually the main core hit us.

At this point, I had to abandon the photo session as the heavens opened and the winds picked up and I didn't want my beloved D40 to get ruined by the rain!
Both pictures are 30 seconds exposure and was taken from my front lawn at around 10.30 pm.

This is what we had down on the south coast late last night:

We had an absolute downpour in Northampton this afternoon about 4pm, not seen rain that heavy in a while, unfortunatley there was that low visibility that you could only really see the flash of the lightning and no actual bolts, I've never photographed lightning before and I want the chance.

What's the best technique? Hold it open on bulb till you see the lightning and then click shutter? I've got a d200, tripod and remote shutter release cable.

Wow guys, your shots are awesome
I sat in my porch for 45 mins or so trying, but it just wasn't the right location.
Although sadly, it's the only really good location we have at the moment, due to a messy house

Had some more storms on and off today. But it was too light to even attempt any shooting.

Maybe next time!
