There's nothing like the sound of a Merlin…unless it's eight of them.

Hoping for 10 in 10 days or so... BBMF with the Canadian Lancaster at Dawlish air show.

Such a distinctive sound.

Such a distinctive sound.

Indeed it is. :) BBMF Thumper MkIII flew right over my roof on the way back from NI last Saturday. Fortunately her sound preceded her and I was able to watch her coming from a fair distance. It's a sound that makes the hair on you neck stand on end.

The first of the few was on TV yesterday, the bit where Crisp flew the spitfire over Mitchell's house as he was dying from cancer was quite moving, even through the TV speakers the sound of the engine had me going, it's a sound that makes me feel very British

Watched that here too....I'm a secret David Niven fan :-)

Me too

My wife said did people really speak like that in the 30s

Posh people did and still do

I know!!
Love war films from that era and all the "I say old chap" lines

In Which we Serve...Noel Coward..."Don't worry darling, she's a good ship". :-)

I've had the good fortune to have had an "earthbound" ride in the East Kirby Lanc . NX611. The sound of those engines starting up from the outside, wonderful though it is, is nothing like hearing them being opened up and the brakes being taken off.
