Yes
...that I was caught fondling a Nikon at last weeks TP trip to Bolton Abbey.

I can confirm that all reports (well most of them) are true.
Having been a Canon man since the day I went DSLR, I asked our very own chuckles if I could have a quick play with his D200, as I had never even held a Nikon DSLR before.

The only reason I went Canon (350D) is that I was following everyone else I knew in the photography world. They all had Canon DSLRs and it was the only DSLR I could afford at the time too.

Well, anyway, I must say, I picked up the D200, and my first thought was "Boy, is this comfortable", and it was. I noticed immediately, how comfortable it was in my hand, slightly more so than my 30D if I'm being honest.
The viewfinder...not sure if it was bigger, I didn't do a side by side comparison, but it did feel easier to look through. With my 30D, without the eyepiece extender on, I find I have to mover my eye 'around' to see all four corners, or squish up right against the eyepiece to see all the viewfinder at the same time.

Also, I found the horizontal and vertical lines in the viewfinder a great bonus (especially as I was pointing it at a landscape shot with a horizon). Not sure if they would be a help or a hindrance with something like macro or portraits, but I can see where they would certainly benefit.
The shutter sound has a nice reassuring 'clunk' to it too.

I know this isn't the most technical of viewpoints and for a £1000 SLR, it's hardly a decisive review, but I'm simply giving my thoughts after having had a first hold of a Nikon, even if only it was for a few moments.

So....I have to admit, for first impressions, I was suitably impressed, and I felt I needed to admit it (and this was before I was bribed by a Marianne home made choc chip cookie).

So....in light of this I feel I must say...

:nikon:

Even though there's no doubt I still

:canon:

Sitting firmly on the fence with your last couple of statements then Marcel.

My dad is wanting to buy a dslr, but he has huge hands. He was thinking either the canon 30d or the nikon d200. As you have used both, which would you reccommend?

So are you coming out of the closet or going back in ;) ?

The D200 does look like a nice bit of kit, and if I was buying my first camera it would be a serious contender, really want a 5D though

I own one ... and I am always gonna ... :nikon:

Always ... :D

Even if they don't do them in Green ... yet ...

To be honest, I don't think there's *that* much difference in it.
I don't have overly large hands, just bigguns really (I'm 6'4).
I think the D200 just felt slightly more 'snug'....ie slightly more contoured to the hand.

I wouldn't have thought your dad would have a problem with either TBH, however, the best thing he can do is pick them both up and see if either suits his grip.
I didn't really have a problem with how small the 350D was at first (until I got bitten by the upgrade bug of course).

If I was in the market for buying into a system, and I was looking at it properly and objectively, I would seriously give Nikon a thought.

Like I say, the only reason I went Canon at the time, is that a 350D was all I could afford, and I was blindly following everyone else I knew into photography who were all Canon users. I think that's where Canon have this massive edge...the market share.

Yup, and the sheep/lemming thing really works well for them :p :D

Marcel - did you play with the controls? Because the few times I've played with Nikons, that's always been my biggest issue. I was like "What the...? How do I...? Where's the flippin'...? Well why's it there and not here? Why isn't there a thumbwheel?"

Etc etc

Im the same when I use a Canon. Its just a different system to get used to. :)

Oh yeah, totally. I wasn't saying Canon's was necessarily better. I just wondered how Marcel found it.

He found it by asking Chuckles of course ...

Seriously though ... the D200 is well thought out and logical ... found it a real snip to use ... even after the D70s I had before ...

:p

Gotta agree that if I were in the market I would be very tempted by the D200. But since I'm not, Nikons suck! ;)

Marcel, dont make me close the forums, the remove your access to the server, and your emails and then ban you...we've been down that road before...

Yeah, but when people lay hold your equipment and say it feels really good in their hands, it's SO gratifying!

can't you get a different eye piece lens thingy with the lines on for the Canon ?

Yes, I'm sure you can... several different focusing screens ... the lines are actually on the focusing screen. They're user changeable too.

 What a confession.

U have to sell all your Canon lenses and buy new Nikon ones.

Marcel

I thought you were going to confess about being seen down at the chippy wearing your little black dress :D

BTW, thanks for the brew

Yes, Marcel's strength flows from the Force. But beware of the dark side. Anger, fear, aggression; the dark side of the Force are they. Easily they flow, quick to join you in a fight. If once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will.

:D :D :D

I reckon Vader uses a Canon myself :D

Don't buy the 300 f2.8 non-is lens from Aperture, it's the one I had and it's not in excellent condition, well the hood and outside aren't but the optics are 100% brilliant.

Carl.

And Lo! He saw the Light and He saw that it was Good...

Despite my favourable Canon experience (EOS 5D without hand-grip), I'll stick with Nikons as they sit so comfortably and can put up with literally everything I can throw at them, unlike (and I'm not saying all of them, but...) the Canons I saw out in Afghanistan, which couldn't cope with the heat and dust.

It's been a while since anyone held my equipment and said it fit nice in their hands...

Awww you remember :D :exit:

It's not the first time someone's gone away smiling after handling my equipment ;)

(The gridlines on the screen are on option BTW. You can turn it off by a simple little menu fiddle..... and it joins the list of "recently changed items" menu.... :whistling:)
