I've read a few comments on here about the Photography Institute.co.uk online photography course and I've been looking for a course to do and I noticed its on offer at £350 for the course.

Really just wondering what people who have paid for this course think of it and are there other alternatives?

I'm currently a quater of the way through the course and so far have thoroughly enjoyed it. Although much of the stuff in the first module I already knew as I have progressed further I have began to learn more. Also the course is written to encourage you to understand and know your camera better, it's dynamic range, how it responds to altering things like iso (not just with introducing noise) etc.

I would definately recommend it and of course you get a recognised diploma at the end. Also their is a headed letter you can download and use to buy student priced software from Adobe. Lightroom 3 for only £60 here I come :)

Not wanting to rain on your parade, but if you check my posting here http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?p=3332391#post3332391 you will see that these courses are not official diplomas, hence the cheap price, not saying the courses are not any good, but if a proper degree or diploma is what you want, I would look at the OCA-uk.co.uk official university degree site.

£4-£5k is not cheap, but I would rather spend that than £300-£500 on a course that means nothing, whilst many others here say that experiance and your portfolio are worth ten times any degree.

I am considering the OCA course, but time, family, money, are all concerns at this time.

Best of luck.

To be honest I'm more interested in what I will learn and the big discount off Adobe software :)

Also, just to clear up a little confusion that happens regularly on here, the course you are talking about is this one whereas the OP is talking about this one .

I have seen both courses, they do look similar and the software discounts look good as well, I just wanted to point out that they only offer their own Diplomas, these are Not "a Recognised Diploma" by any official UK education authority, but do show an aptitude to learn, I am going to try the Practical Photography "Free" online course first, to see how I get on with this type of learning, before forking out any cash.

Cheers

Hi,

I studied photography at uni, and after 3 years and a lot of money i have a degree in it. I have to say, although i thoroughly enjoyed it for the uni life, it did not get me my job in photography! Infact when i asked my boss why he hired me he told me that it was because of my portfolio and my voluntary work (showing that i found hard work to be its own reward). The degree meant nothing in his eyes!

Now people send me their CVs and we don't want to hear what qualifications they have, we are only interested in their portfolio. I think courses can be good if they improve your photography and give you confidence. But i wouldn't get too caught up on the diplomas or qualifications it gains you. I know my degree hasn't helped me! (although the life experience of uni did... so my parents didn't completely waste their money!!)

Lightroom is available off the adobe web site for only £45....

Yeah I noticed the Practical Photography course is running again this year so I will certainly be giving that a go, I am tempted by the online course especially as its only £350 at the moment.

Can you tell me where this course is available for £350, still showing £500 on their site now after a £50 discount ?

I can 100% believe it.. but your story makes little sense unless you give us an idea what job/area of photography you are in ? :)

Have you a link for their newsletter to recieve emails, can't see a link on the site ?

Cheers.

If you register for a prospectus here including your email address they soonstart sending emails offering discount. Wait long enough and the discounts get bigger and bigger :)
