Yes
Off to Alton Towers in the morning, I imagine there will be lots of cool spots for photography, structures etc. However I don't like the idea of dragging the dslr around!

Have you guys photographed in theme parks before? Do you put the camera in the place as your jacket when you go on rides etc?

Hi. Ive never been to AT but the thought of risking a camera when on the rides is enough to make me leave the dslr behind. take a compact and zip it into your pocket!

For the benefit of anyone searching this in the future, how did you get on? did you take the DSLR?

You won't be allowed a camera on the fast rides and bags won't be allowed either and must be left in the unmonitored bag cages at your own risk, and yes stuff does sometimes get nicked. If you sneak one on and they catch you, you risk being asked to leave.

I have seen the blood when a coin hit someone from a ride, I'd hate to see what would happen if a 1kg+ DSLR hit you after coming free.

Also be very careful if there are a lot of kids about, people are getting more paranoid every day.

I took my DSLR to PortAventura in Spain. I had it in a small camera only Lowepro bag, and had that inside my rucksack. On the big rollercoasters you can't take your bags on, but it gets put in a cage to the side of the ride and I made sure I got off the ride quickly at the end to reclaim it. Noone ever made an attempt to grab my bag. A few other rides I had to take my bag on with me which was no big deal at all.

There were literally hundreds of people there openly walking round with DSLR's round their necks, although being in Spain their mentality may be a bit different from ours.

For Alton Towers, I'd probably still take my DSLR but in a small bag inside a regular rucksack so it doesn't scream "Expensive Camera!!"

Sad but true, my wife took some shots at the zoo last week and was asked by a parent nearby to stop, after showing her the shots and pointing out that her 'little cherub' was nowhere to be seen she wandered off grumbling under her breath.

It's not just us guys that have to be careful now

Even the theme park staff wouldn't stop you, unless you were obviously taking pics of kids that weren't your own or on the beach at Thorpe Park, where even camera phones are banned and it's actively enforced.

Just tell the parent to jog on and you don't want any pictures of their kids as the monkeys are better looking.
