My train was delayed today which was bad news. There was a 40 minute delay as we went back through the station I had left 50 minutes before.

The good news was that I was sat talking to the greatest goal keeper in the entire history of football for the best part of two hours. Words cannot describe what a modest, genuine, pleasant and entertaining gentleman Gordon Banks is. What a refreshing change from the pouting, over paid prima donnas that parade up and down the Premiership every week end.

It was a privilege. How often do you get the chance to meet the world's best at anything? How often do you get the chance to talk to them for a decent period of time about what they were the greatest at? If you were to pick an all time world XI then he'd be wearing number 1. He confirmed that Pele (the man who could do anything with a football) would be wearing number 10.

you post this on a photography forum with no pictures - hmmm

Seriuosly envious of you mate.

he is a great keeper for his time. Just like pele was great in his time. IMO as time passes and humans get fitter faster and stronger the greats of old, if had a time machine back then would have struggled against even the likes of ronaldo , ronaldinho , even some Newcastle players :-).

Still must have been great to chat to him.

Yep TorqueRevs but a footballer today would break a bone kicking the ball these guys had to.

Congrats rh1944 it's a pity we don't see the likes of him more on telly as pundits.

They still say he made the greatest World Cup save ever..... He was (and still is i guess) a top bloke too.

Lucky Git ! :sulk:

I could fall out with you about that. We reckoned that neither of us had seen a world class player in the last ten years. Bobby Charlton reckons that the greatest ever player he saw at Man Utd was Duncan Edwards and Bobby is still watching the pouting prancers of today.

They may be fitter and stronger today, and they break down more often. Shankly picked 12 players for the first 41 matches of a league in which people could and did tackle. How many players do they need to get through a 38 Premiership season, more than 12?

My wife knows his daughter, a few years back we were invited to a kids birthday party with our son, I got delayed so arrived 1/2 an hour late, knocked on the front door and Gordon answered it, I looked at him and said, you're Gordon Banks , He just smiled and said yes

What a tool "you're Gordon banks", like he didn't know:nuts:

Fitter faster and stronger are not part of the comparison. We are not comparing the Ronaldinho of today with the Pele of 1970. The comparison is how much better than the average player of today is Ronaldinho against how much better than the average player of 1970 was Pele. The answer to that is that Pele was better to a higher degree than Ronaldinho is. Most of us are certain that if we asked Ronaldinho, he would not even attempt to pretend that he was better than Pele.

Who was the last tennis player to enter and win eight consecutive tennis Grand Slams? Not one of the fitter faster stronger players of today with their better equipment. Why has no faster fitter and stronger athlete broke the 200 m workd record in the last 12 years even with the faster tracks and better equipment? The answers are because Rod Laver and Michael Johnson were two of the greatest exponents of their sports.

He was charming and unassuming. It was a privilege to speak to him.

No faster fitter and stronger goalie has come near to making a save of that quality. Pele must have thought it was in, only Gordon thought it wasn't. In the 38 years since then I can only think of one save that came close. He is a top bloke - I wish we had his like between our sticks today.

ALso footballers of them days werent shot by an invisible gun

He hates divers more than anything else in modern football, though shirt pulling instead of tackling is not high on his list.

Have you ever heard and seen this boy?

What a person to meet! I think its great when ledgends are the nicest and most common people you could meet. I can't stand these arrogant overpaid cry babys that are about today.

He was a wonderful person to meet. A real privilege, I just couldn't sit in a railway carriage that from him and not say anything. I would have regretted it for ever. His life must be full of people talking to him when he's available; he could have blown me off. He didn't. When you think of some of the other legends, they too are nice people. Tom Finney and Pele are wonderful human being who were great at what they did. Perhaps its their wonderful natures that helped them be wonderful sportsmen.

Go to YouTube start typing Pele Banks, you won't need to type Save as it is top of the drop down list. Then there's the BBC coverage from Jairzinho skinning Terry Cooper to Pele's header to Gordon turning the ball round the post. Start video. The qaulity of the film is poor, the quality of the football is extraordinary.

GORDONS ALIVE???

did you ask him about krypton factor?

He is very much alive. In great physical shape, can't weigh more than he did in his playing days. Bright as a button and a complete gentleman, wonderful company.

I didn't ask about krypton factor, we talked football - about which he knows loads. We talked about Pele, Boby Charlton, Ray Wilson, George Cohen, Tommy Smith, Ron "Chopper" Harris, Jimmy Greaves, Dennis Law, Gert Muller, Puskas, Tom Finney and the goalkeepers in England.

i wish i knew about football.. it sounds great..
