Doesn’t matter how you characterise it, the important point is a comparison between the nature of the (repeated) violations by Cummings and the one-off violation by Ferguson. (Not sure it was a work place incident in either case
)

Someone in his position of power didn't even need to drive at all. If, as he states, he and his wife were clear of Covid 19 at that time he could have ordered his government chauffeur to come and get him, And as his wife drives, and she was less affected, either she could have driven or they could have shared the driving.
And his statement that they did the outward run non-stop doesn't ring true either, a 5 hour run without a loo stop - possible for adults but for a four year old? What I don't understand is why none of the journalists raised any of these points.
I do have some sympathy for the man because he is being ganged up on by politicians of all parties and the press - mainly because he is hated and despised by most of them.

As a parent, I'd have much more respect for him if he just said "you know what, I shouldn't have broken the rules, but I did. Yes, not everyone has the luxury of another home they could isolate in, I feel terrible for them, but any parent in my position would have made the same decision."
But just pretending the rules said he could do what he did, when they clearly didn't, and no apology. That just makes it worse.

I think he should go but I don’t hate him (don’t know him anyway) and as I’ve posted before I have some agreement with some of his reported non-Brexit policies/ideas.

Me too, but apparently many of those who did flout the rules yesterday were quick to point a finger at Cummings pretty much saying if he can then so can we!

Yes, it’s odd that this so-called master of public opinion couldn’t see that. Johnson was out of action most of the time but this story has been going on behind the scenes for 6 weeks since the Guardian/Mirror first started asking questions of HMG spokesmen. Probably shows the UK was rudderless in that period at least (arguably, as Dom would say, for months

I'm not so sure that employing a driver would be an acceptable answer as they'd surely risk exposing the driver to the virus?
I know I'm a minority here but I do hate to see the media and mob mentality aimed at individuals. Watching the interview yesterday I thought is was cringe worthy and I also disliked seeing the same questions asked repeatedly by different reporters.
Two things I hadn't considered, well three really. I read somewhere that there's an issue with their child, I'm not sure what the issue is and I haven't read or heard that anywhere else so I don't know if it's true or not but if it is true then that's possibly another factor to consider. Another thing I hadn't considered was the demonstrations outside their home and also the threats on social media.
Faced with C19 in the family and the added factors of demonstrations and calls for attacks on unsocial media I'll be honest about what I'd do, I'd put the family in the car and drive to a safer place.
If I was his boss / employer I wouldn't want to be too quick to sack him. His actions may well be understandable and even justified if we try to put ourselves in his position but I think it's wider and more nasty than if he broke the lockdown or not now as I do think much of this is about targeting a disliked man. A man disliked for his successes and for his personality/manor too possibly. Looking at this and trying to keep an open mind and keeping any dislike of the man and what he stands for out of it I don't think he should be sacked unless there's some big lie yet to be uncovered.
I think he may have to eventually go though as once the mob is out for blood facts, objectivity and even humanity and decency go out the window.

Well, according to Mr Cummings he had self isolated for two weeks by the time that he drove back home, so a driver would not have been at any risk.
I agree about the media pressure and the mob mentality, that's always wrong even though it's a fact of life. People who live their lives in the public eye - and especially those who make themselves unpopular - need to accept public scrutiny and unfortunately hounding by the press is a by product of that scrutiny. However, the hounding didn't start until after the story broke, which puts the lie to his story.

I found a comment by Boris during his briefing about Dominic Cummings Durham trip and Michael Gove's comment this morning on Breakfast really annoying.
Johnson said DC acted with integrity and Gove said DC was an honourable man. Really, an hourable man with integrity?
Given almost every public statement by a senior politician is carefully crafted I find it worrying they are so out of touch they do not appear to realise many of the public, especially those in a similar situation to DC but who stayed at home, think he is anything but an honourable man who showed integrity.
I wonder if they ever think, "He might have been acting within the letter of the law but not in the spirit of the law and a large proportion of the public have condemned his actions. I know I'll tell everybody what a really good bloke he is."
The fact that Boris managed to misjudge how to pitch his statement also shows a huge lack of judgement.

I think there's a difference between accepting scruitany and even hounding by the press to a degree and demonstrations outside homes and calls for attacks on social media. These things are way beyond what any of us should view as acceptable. Even the press hounding can go too far, Cummings is no Diana but we can see it's a potentially very damaging thing to be hounded by the media.

There was a rumour started on social media that his child had autism, but that seems to be untrue.
I think, personally, what needs to be considered here is how those who understand the need for social distancing and not taking unnecessary journeys, the scientists and the medical professionals and most if not all are critical of his actions.

I think many people couldn't give a flying either way. There was a poll reported on the radio that 52% wanted his sacked, they said something to the effect that this was hardly resounding. If the media weren't so out for him I doubt many people would care.

The main problem here is what this whole story does to respect for the rules and trust in the Government. Restrictions may need to be tightened again in the future if there's no vaccine any time soon. The message had already been weakened by BJ's incoherent press conference the other week, and now it seems that everything is optional if you have kids. Cummings should have issued a full apology and resigned immediately and then, if BJ finds him indispensable, he could be brought back quietly when all this has blown over (as scandal-hit ministers often are). And frankly, if Cummings has been playing a key role in the Government's response to the Pandemic up to now, BJ should be looking for better advice, and better advisers.

I can't remember where I heard the whisper about the the child but it must have been either R5, BBC or ITN as I don't do social media.
I do think that many people in a similar position may have done the same, if they'd had a nice out of the way farm to go to. If that justifies a sacking or not I'm pretty sure in my own mind and it's a no from me unless there's a big lie in there somewhere yet to come out. As I said earlier he may need to go because I can't see this going away unless there's another scandal and the scent of new blood to distract. I see this as a shame as faced with a person and a baying mob my first reaction is to want to understand both views and having heard both in his position I may well have done the same based on the demonstrations and threats alone.

Ah yes, the press were camped outside his home because they'd waited until this story had broken then all jumped in their time machines to sit outside his house before the things they were reporting on had actually happened. During lockdown, when they weren't allowed to be camped outside his house.

I had to go for an hours drive with my family to a local beauty spot on my wife's birthday, who coincidentally can also drive, to test my eyesight.
I rushed home to help my COVID stricken wife who didn't have COVID so I went back to work then later that night rushed to Durham because we had to isolate ourselves because my wife had COVID, but it was all fine because she didn't have COVID, and I had to get back to work in London, so that justifies my drive to Durham."

I really can't see how if you believed his story, you'd be defending him.
He said he went back to work, physically back to work, in Downing Street. After going home to look after his wife who he suspected might have COVID.
Even if the rest of his story is 100% true. That right there, put his colleagues and the wider public, at direct risk. And I'm amazed anyone would try to justify that tbh.

I think it's a bit of a stretch and she (and Di) were in my mind when I thought about Cummings and his family. I can't remember his name but I remember another politician who was knifed, I think in his office.
I think we do have to be careful, well maybe not us as although some of us get a pit passionate I hope none of us will be demonstrating outside peoples homes or attacking people in the street or workplace. But faced with the darker voices someone might.

I wonder if those who are criticising the media for "hounding" were equally as critical over their behaviour with regarding the smear campaign aimed at Corbyn before the election. Interestingly, anti-semitism in the Labour party doesn't appear to be an issue any more.
