The virus. PPE. Part 1

My keybawd has a miind of its own today.

Or maybe it's because I watched a Pink Panther film yesterday.

I don't know how much clearer I can be but I'll try.

I'm not a great lover of any political party. Labour was my spiritual home for a long time but now... no. So, I'm no lover of the cons but for me its not enough to heckle from the crowd and even if that's all we're doing I think it needs fleshing out.

People are complaining and alleging incompetence and lack of action but I do wonder what they'd think if what was being done in other countries was attempted here. I suggest that some screaming now would still be screaming or even more so.

And then there the question of what we'd personally do.

I'll be honest, I'd have acted sooner and it would have been very unpopular. Can you imagine the BBC running a headline story of people being stopped at airports and either put on flights back or bussed off to an RAF base somewhere for isolation? There'd have been a social media melt drown. Then there's the issue of the UK's capability to manufacture everything from medical kit through ppe and onto test kits. It's all been a perfect storm just waiting to happen.

We could have planned against it but the measures we'd have needed would have been descried as communism by some, a step on the way to right wing dictatorship by others and the costs would have been critisised at every step of the way. My own opinion is that the UK could have been better prepared but no one saw this coming and even if they had they didn't have the time to put into place things which have melted away over what? 50 years or more?
I can agree with a lot of that except “no one saw it coming” which is untrue as it was predicted repeatedly and there were earlier recent examples :(.

As for ”descried as communism”, maybe if it has been, say, a Corbyn govt, but I can’t see it workng with this lot :).

This does seem to be all over the media and IMO irresponsibly so.

We'll have to wait for the official announcement but the trend and push seems to be for the lockdown to be eased. I'm tempted to say society will get what it deserves. Whatever happens the media and friendface crowd will find something to shriek about.

Blame Boris. It's all over his official facebook, no cover image, big shiny images.

Can't really blame the media for reporting on what the PM is saying.

When was it predicted? Arguably not far enough back to build up a manufacturing and testing capability including spare capacity in the UK I'd guess?

I didn't say the current govt was communist. What I meant was that some things that arguably needed to be done would have been seen as being either communist or right wing. ie. Building up manufacturing and maintaining capacity in the UK = Communism. Tracking apps and tracing = police state.

And when did he post that Andy?

IMO the media have been pushing for a reduction in lockdown for a while now.

Before the media started repeating the "Stay Alert" line that @sphexx referred to in his post that you quoted..

There's been pressure for some time Andy.

I know the thought that someone other than the Cons or Trump could be seen to be acting irresponsibly goes against every fiber of your being so I'll agree, just to make you happy :D

Edit to say that now of course the Alt Right are claiming this proves Bill Gates started the CV :(.

Yes, I understood you perfectly, just disagree it would be seen that way with this lot :(.

You said that the "Stay Alert" slogan had been all over the media in response to Sphexx. If that's not what you meant then fair enough. But that line has only been in the media since the Govt said it. That's the statement I was responding to in your post.

Deliberately vague advice so that they can shrug any blame off and say it's "our fault" for not understanding the message?

I noticed the change of colour, but hadn't given it any thought. But i must admit my first assumption was that there is going to be a relaxing of restrictions with the public lager getting the blame if things take a turn for the worst.

Simple. One factor is social mobility, more densely populated over here, plus the fact we get half of Europe travelling through London !!!

Comparing Greece to the Uk is quite simply stupid!!

Not according to the often miss quoted by Ministers and Prime Minister Professor Sir David Spiegelhalter.

Alternatively they have just changed the colour scheme from a fire engine to an ambulance, which is more fitting.

NOT people, the Police and various other authorities. I did not say people ( general public) . ;)

Yes and I find it ridiculous. Its probably me but wouldn't someone in their right mind stop in and keep away from others if they had a temperature?

Your condition might be down to a high metabolism? I'm the same when everyone else are wrapped up and shivering, I'm there in a short sleeved shirt wondering what all the fuss is about.

Boris Johnson's announcement - seems weak and opening the door to more public abuse.

One big difference I note between Johnson and Sturgeons was the former said you can sit in the park but the latter expressly said that their relaxation on excercise does NOT mean sunbathing in the parks. Bet we see an increase in sunbathers in England.

I cant stand Sturgeon, but I respect her opinion on this one.

She's the one with the balls.:naughty:

I've said it before, and although I wouldn't go as far as to say I am warming to her, I have been listening to her daily Covid-19 statements and found them much more competent, better explained and honest than the ones from Westminster.

Got one fact totally wrong, biggest threat this country has seen in my lifetime has been the Tory party.

In the words of the song there were more questions than answers

I found the following from Boris concerning -

"We want to encourage people to take more and even unlimited amounts of outdoor exercise" and, "you can drive to other destinations.. ",

I wonder what rural communities who have asked people to stay away because they have little or no Covid19 cases and have limited medical and emergency services think about this change. A couple of days ago there was a news item that the Coastguard had seen an increase in call outs even under the initial lockdown restrictions.

I can imagine some taking the above to mean they can drive anywhere they want for pretty much as long as they want.

Given that Wales and Scotland haven't changed they guidance I wonder if rural areas of England are going to be crammed next weekend.

Don't bother coming to Devon - weather's lousy for the next couple of weeks.

And, if we will see armed guards along the Scottish and Welsh borders, as I suspect not everyone will realise the differences. (I, of course, exaggerate about the armed bit)

From the BBC: The prime minister is effectively trying to pull off the impossible. He wants to try to restart normal life, while keeping the virus at bay with limited means to do so.

He's in a rock-hard place scenario and is probably running out of affordable options, especially with people muttering about recession in his ear. It doesn't sound to me like good choices have been made and we're at least a couple of weeks too early, but I hope I'm wrong.

Living in rural Oxfordshire, we've seen a steady increase in the numbers of people walking through the village, most of whom we've never seen before. That's only likely to increase.

Easily forgotten by some - I’m afraid there is no money. Kind regards – and good luck!

Ah, but who had the money?

.... Good news! That means my surfer mates can go surfing and I can go and photograph them again. Also I can give my car a blast - She needs it!

Easy to forget that was meant as a private joke by Liam Byrne to his successor in the wake of the financial crash, before it was shamelessly weaponised by David Cameron.

'And so in my final hours of office, I was writing thank-you notes to my incredible team of civil servants. And then I thought I’d write one letter more to my successor. Into my head came the phrase I’d used to negotiate all those massive savings with my colleagues: “I’m afraid there is no money.” I knew my successor’s job was tough. I guess I wanted to offer them a friendly word on their first day in one of government’s hardest jobs by honouring an old tradition that stretched back to Churchill in the 1930s and the Tory chancellor Reginald Maudling, who bounced down the steps of the Treasury in 1964 to tell Jim Callaghan: “Sorry to leave it in such a mess, old cock.” '

This is going to end well.

I think Wales and Scotland will increase the fines and be less tolerant of tourists coming over from England, no doubt some of the tourists will think its ok to visit Snowdon now Boris has explained his "plan" and changes to the rules/guidance.
