Can anyone workout why medical supplies to the Isle of Wight are going to be trialed next week? https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-52419705

Although there are restrictions on the ferries to the IoW, Portsmouth - Fishbourne is operating a two hourly service so why use it? Much more could be delivered in one go than a number of drones and as the ferry is operating anyway I can't see the risk of transmission will be increased.

Dave

I imagine they are "looking" constantly but I think that their decision should be based on how many fatalities any change will cause or even alleviate.

I would say they know that the 70+ bracket is generally Tory voting, so doing everything they can to save them!!!

I'd hope so.
It looks like we've possibly peaked, so by 7th May they'll know if we have, and may be able to start lifting some restrictions?
The problem is, if they lift some of the restrictions, the covidiots will take that as everything's ok now, and you know what can happen....

I think if things are not lifted when everyone else is you will see more people rebelling against the restrictions.

I do agree we have to be careful when they start to lift the lockdown, as with BJ having getting over it I do think he is scared and don`t blame him at all either. Even if they could say...OK we might start with letting this lot back and go from there.
They can’t tel you “when” (as in a date), it would need a crystal ball, but they could discuss “how” and what factors they are considering and engage with the people, which I think is what Nicola Sturgeon is doing, though, I didn’t hear her speech.

Yes it is a hard one, but they could say, we might look at lifting in June as here in town some construction is about to re start.

Define “everyone else! South Korea, Brazil, New Zealand???

She was quite vague but yes, give people some ideas - the Germans have said pubs and restaurants planned for end of August, now we know that could change either way but its a plan at least. Break down the different elements such as retail shops, pubs, beauty and give indicators on who is first/last and even some estimated timescales.

US, France, Germany etc..
I can’t see how US is relevant, without going into criticisms of their response, the country is so different (and diverse geographically etc) from U.K. Even in U.K. the Scottish Highlands are so different from, say, London and then compounded by the fact that if you lifted restrictions in remote areas you’d have problems with ‘tourism’ from others.
I did hear part of a presentation by N Sturgeon where she was banging on about “health of Scots” and someone asked “what about border areas which will be affected by what is happening in England” and I think she repeated that “health of Scots” was her only concern :(.

Possibly the trial is centred on checking out the use of drones.

When we live on a planet the health of everyone is relative and when there is a pandemic on that planet the health of everyone is of vital importance to us all. When we live on an island the health of everyone on that island (esp. a small island) assumes even greater importance to everyone on that island.

As the USA and Gerrmany are easing their lockdowns now, the UK should start to look at doing the same. USA is worst in the world for deaths yet they are slowly unlocking.
Probably because Germany have a lower death rate

The USA population is 5 times ours...
The country is 40 times bigger and from I see they.re not to bothered how many die.

I think that's a silly thing to say.

And schools could start to go back on the 11th June in the UK but compare the mentality of the British people and media. If they get told something which then doesn't materialise their like babies
I'd put my plan in circulation when I thought it was right, not when nobodies keep moaning on and on and on.

You "think" she repeated......?
So you didn't actually hear her say that?
It doesn't sound like the kind of thing that she would say tbh.

Which is why they won't publish the SAGE meeting minutes, despite it being in their standard procedures that they should be.
Doesn't the article state the meeting minutes are published a lot later if at all?

If I was running the country, I'd have my representative at any meeting I wanted.

Minutes are supposed to be published as soon as they're available.

They've chosen not to do that. Probably because it would reveal who was on the committee, and show that the "science" the govt are choosing to follow is actually just Cummings.

And of course, you can do that, but when it's a scientific advisory panel having people on it that aren't scientists seems a bit stupid.

True, I am not certain, hence “think”, now I’ll have to find a clip :(.

Though it does sound like the kind of thing she says. Like most Scotch politicians and others, she hardly utters a sentence without mentioning ”Scot_” whereas you hardly hear “Eng_” referring to the inhabitants of England, always British or maybe “people of this country” (which country?).

Granted “England” is often misused to mean U.K. or GB but that’s another story.

Yes, she's the Scottish First Minister so will use the word Scot a lot.
I watched a video where she was asked about Scotland possibly following a different timetable to England/rest of the UK, and she said that might be a possibility, but her primary objective was to do what was right for the Scottish people, and so it should.
She didn't say anything that indicated she wasn't concerned about or didn't care about other countries as it appears you've tried to imply.
Having said that, maybe we were watching different videos. :-)

Ha ha! I don’t think I want to go down this rabbit hole because it’s bound to end badly :) As you say, we may have seen different (maybe same but edited differently :() videos :).

Yes, we have had just a few weeks of lockdown and all the pathetic whingers are out in force and grabbing every possible opportunity to exercise their gripes about the government, Boris and all.
It is hard to believe that this is same country that had the population bombed in their own homes, endured war for 6 years with millions of their families and friends killed or maimed (and had 14 years of food rationing).
What did their Prime Minister tell them .......... “I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat.” Did they start whimpering and whinging ? No they did not. They stuck together , displayed courage and resilience.

I also like the way that at her daily statement there is a sign language interpreter present and working.

Churchill was a man who'd fought in one war, reported on several others, led the Royal Navy through the first world conflict and then led the whole country through the second. He had many faults but even on his worst days was competent and trustworthy. I can't see any of Churchill's positive qualities in the current prime minister.

Maybe partly due to their leadership being strong and leading by example, and not telling them they'd just have to put up with Hitler and take it on the chin.

Look at evidence of the "blitz spirit" to see how it has been altered.
Just one example https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/mar/19/myth-blitz-spirit-model-coronavirus there are many more studies which are similar. The King & Queen even got booed when they visted East London.
The Dorchester had its own deep level shelters with beds and silk sheets - we have never been all in it together.

Pretti Patel telling us shoplifting figures are lower than the same period last year, where has she been for the last 5 weeks? I don't know about her High St. but the one in my city is closed down.

So she told the truth then? ;)

I like Nicola Sturgeon, she seems to me to be a steady hand on the tiller in times of crisis.
Agreed, she would do a better job at Westminster than this lot!

Edit: typo

I understand the US population (330 million) is similar to the combined populations of Germany/Spain/Italy/France and the UK.

The US death total is approx 52,500, the total deaths in the 5 european countries mentioned is close to 100,000.

The population density has a huge effect on the spread of the virus, which is a disadvantage in the european countries.

And of course looting from bombed buildings, black market and though there was rationin, restaurants were available if you had the money. (Foyle’s War on TV has a good selection, reasonably accurately)

Have to confess I was 3-9 years old, bombed out (V1, all family survived) and only remember happy times from then and not lack of food etc. in Kent & Dorset. Great to watch planes (not far from Biggin Hill airfield) and so on.

Do remember finding eggs weren’t a powder but came in a shell, when we visited my father (Royal Artillery) in Bude (Ubique, but Bude then, presumably training :)).

And of course Australia, though much connected with China, population 25M but deaths only in the tens or scores. Actually quite dense population I think since nearly all live in a few cities.

Supermarkets are still open.

Which probably explains why London, New York and Madrid have been hit so badly.

I can't decide whether London has a bigger population of dingbats as a consequence of being a larger denser population than most, or that culturally they are more likely to not do as they're ******* told.
Maybe its both, although it was busy everywhere I went yesterday oopnorth.
A polish rabble tried to gate crash the Lidl queue I was stood in yesterday.
After being told where the back of the queue was and that only one person per household at a time could shop, they complained that they weren't from the same household so should be allowed in together, yet...they all got out the same car.
I dunno who is stupider, them or the dunces on London bridge every Thursday night.
