I've just got a txt from the govt saying I should stay home.

Is this a general message everyone with a smartphone gets or does Boris have a genuine interest in ME? :D or more likely, because I'm in a higher risk group?

Most of the Networks are sending them out.

ah, I'm not so special then :(

And there was I imagining Boris worrying about me :D

Reading news from Spain (in France)......

The Spanish Army arrived to disinfect a care home for the elderley and found the residents in bed, some dead and the staff gone.....deserted them.

What a world we live in.

I know, unbelievable that such a thing should happen!

I've noticed that age is no longer a factor for isolation/shielding. Now the over 70's are asked to practice good social distancing, like everybody else. Which means that. my 81 year old MiL who has hardly any bowel, one breast one less lymph node and stage 4 kidney disease will not get the support she needs to stay safe.

Please find out if her local council have her on a list as soon as you can mate. I don't know if she may meet the 1.5million letter thats being sent out or not?

Just a thought - got a Tesco delivery coming today should we all be wiping down the packages before we put them away seems a good idea as who knows who has touched or coughed on them.
Rob.

I've been wiping everything now for 2 weeks to be honest. Any good cleaner will do the job, pretty much all detergents are the same, then wash your hands afterwards.

Every time I have had a camera or lens delivery I have opened up the box, then set up the camera and then gone and washed my hands. Today will be the same when my lens arrives, will put it on one of my cameras then give my hands a wash.

Problem there is you've not cleaned the lens so could (highly unlikely I know) still be bugs on the lens?

Just a thought. Do you think there is any benefit in keeping a bowl if warm water with a decent squirt of washing up liquid in it to clean your hands. Would it be effective or not?

Please don't, not for ages anyway. 1. use flowing warm water and soap for proper handwashing. 2. warm water even with detergent can be a breeding ground for other bugs such as psuedomonas etc.

that is good because fairy is what I use but I am sure any of the strong washing up liquids or even floor cleaners would be as effective.

Yes, we don't need any special cleaners, any normal detergents will do the job and are likely already used in your home.

"The government is texting people across the UK to inform them of the new rules announced by the Prime Minister yesterday (23 March 2020). This has been made possible thanks to the cooperation of mobile phone operators. The SMS message reads:

“GOV.UK CORONAVIRUS ALERT New rules in force now: you must stay at home. More info & exemptions at gov.uk/coronavirus Stay at home. Protect the NHS. Save lives.” "

Mrs WW is on Tesco too and she hasn't received one either but in her case it's probably because Tesco can't get a word in.

Don't read this dear :D

as I write this the police helicopter is overhead ?
That's nothing new here, as we have a Cat A prison to too far North from me ;)

The roads were busier to day at just after 5 am than yesterday at the same time.
Still very quiet, better than school holidays (y)

So it looks like none of the lenders of the business interruption loans actually lend to sole traders.

The govt backed part protects the bank, not the lendee.

They have to be secured on your home.

This is what is apparently help for the self employed.

Some people on my social media feed, who are one man Ltd companies, pay themselves minimum wage and then top up with dividends to reduce overall tax and NI burden. Are now saying it's unfair and they should be treated as self employed if self employed are going to get 80% of their earnings as help.

I suppose they'll all be happy to back pay the additional tax and NI too?

Andy, where did you find that self employed will get 80% of their earnings please?

Now would be the time to introduce the universal basic income (or whatever it’s called ), it’s supported by various people/groups on both left and right of politics (not universally supported, but what is?).

This won't affect many people on here I suppose ( apart from me and my work load :woot: )

Amey have just announced they have shut all their HWRC's ( tidy tips what ever you call them)
In the Cambs / Suffolk area.
Amey being Amey are pretty much the "waste leaders" with this sort of thing.
I'm sure the other companies won't be far behind.

So all you lot, clearing out your garages / lofts / spare rooms, while grounded, certainly in the area I mentioned
Won't be able to take a trip down to the local tidy tip, for the foreseeable future.

( but then again, would that be an essential trip? I doubt it. )

I'm pretty certain the Local Authority run the HWRC's round here, but not sure if they're open. Actually my food waste bin didn't get collected today so probably not.

Yep our local tidy tips just been shut too and rightly so. Our recycling is done alternate Fridays as is our Domestic rubbish. I completely expect the council to stop the recylce collections to be honest and carry on with the domestic as thats more likely to be a breeding problem for vermin. Time will tell.

They won't, it was being debated today, but as was pointed out, it's not that simple.

Just made me laugh that as soon as it was being debated, those who've deliberately minimised their salary decided 80% of that (that they can get) isn't good enough... You can't minimise what you pay into the system, then complain when the system doesn't work for you

I'm pretty certain the Local Authority run the HWRC's round here, but not sure if they're open.
Some are privately run, some are LA. Amey has a massive recycling plant in Cambs.
So I guess it makes sense for them to also run the HWRC's.
And a fleet of RoRo lorries to collect the "bins" and take it back to their transfer stations.
Obviously this will have quite a knock on effect for their waste plant, but there was still plenty of out-siders Artics rolling in today ..

Actually my food waste bin didn't get collected today so probably not.
My green bin went last week, garden waste food waste.. So far so good (y)

And so it begins :(
I know you are about 20-ish miles from me ( I'm in MK) and a different LA we still have weekly collections for everything.
Always have. But I'm not sure how long it will continue.

I guess it is hard to know what is fair for people. Some self employed people may see no disruption to business, some may even see more business as a result and make more money. It is a tough one and while annoying, probably worth them spending some time over this to get it right.

Equally I'm not sure as a one man ltd company that you can actually lay yourself off in order to even be eligible for the 80% payment - can you furlough yourself??

I absolutely agree that you can't complain that the system doesn't work for you if you have decided on a certain course of tax efficiency, but lets not assume that all sole traders don't take advantage of offsetting things/expenses against tax either, most people/companies given the choice try to be as tax efficient as possible.

Well in Norfolk they've now cancelled every wedding until the end of August and my wife has had to close her business down, and we're not even entitled to the £94 per week UC as we own a property that we don't live in, so as long as there's £16k capital in the rental property we don't get a penny.

And lots more are in a much worse position than we are, we'll be alright, just have to burn through some of our savings.

That is why London will have many more deaths, unless Boris puts a stop to it tonight.

are you a fully paid up member of the Putin/corbyn fan club.

No, I wasn't sure where to make a payment. Please enlighten me. I would love to be hired by the UN force for the last phase of this exercise towards the end of the year. You know I'm also fully qualified to develop chemical weapons so they might want me in.

now we are all taking part in this story ,when do we get to the bit where they nuke London and Birmingham to stop it spreading o_O o_O :banana::banana::banana:

I've seen various amounts mentioned but I just can't see how we can afford to do this. Who is going to pay or is this another idea based on endless borrowing that we'd leave future generations to worry about?

It will be great for people who don't care how it's met or what any negative impacts on people or wider society over time may be.

I've just got back from walking the dog, I was surprised how busy it was, I suppose it being a sunny day brought people out. Have to say everybody respectfully kept their distance though.

It's simple and actually costs less to just pay everyone a certain amount of basic income than to means test various other incomes. It also means you're always better off working, and leaves the jobs for those that want to work. Those that don't want to work, fine, no more penalities, just a crap quality of life whilst those that have some drive have an even better quality of life than they otherwise would have done.

No, we don't want to leave the younger generation with thousands of pounds of personal debt...oh wait!

I'm not convinced by any of that as there are just so many holes, ifs and buts.

Plus in many parts of the country there are large numbers of people who have no conventional work or education related structure to their lives and some turn to other things which can supply an alternative structure, sort of. For those people having a job and the structure that could bring could be life changing in a good way both for them and society.

If UBI is costed and can work then fine, great, super, smashing but I wouldn't want to see this as another thing that'll just pile debt and misery on as yet unborn generations which I think is much more likely.

Then why add to it?

What we need to do is take a longer term view. What an idea that would be.
