A 15-month-old girl was held at knife-point before burglars stole cash and jewellery from a west London house.

Burglars posing as meter readers entered the home of a 31-year-old woman in Harlington Road, Uxbridge, at about 17:00 GMT on Friday.

The woman saw the man holding a knife to her baby before saying to her, "where is the gold?"

An e-fit of one of the suspects, who pretended to be from a water company, has been released by Scotland Yard.

The man bound the mother's wrists and ankles and put her and her daughter in the bathroom during the raid.

He was then joined by a female accomplice and they began to search the house, eventually making off with some jewellery.

I really hope they catch the scumbag, and given sadly the lack of capital punishment, they are put away for a very very long time.

The thing is, and it pains me to say, I'm not shocked.

I don't believe for a moment, though, that these are common occurrences.

Cheers.

yep its a sad state but its a sign of the times to be honest i can see a lot more like this soon

Was the burglar an immigrant? If so, kill him! If he wasn't, then no doubt he was an upstanding British citizen driven to desperation after having his job stolen by an immigrant.

And yet you'd like to shoot the burglars in the face and that would be acceptable violence?

I'm not sure what you are trying to say. Is it meant to tongue in cheek?
Ethnically speaking, the recent spate of attacks where gold has been the target, have been directed to Asians who like to wear lots of gold. The perpetrators have been other asians. How does that square with the point you are trying to make?

Look who started the thread.....

I rarely agree with Steve's views but his title for this thread is reasonable. Holding a knife at someone's throat involves physical force and I think it is very difficult for anyone doing this to claim they did not intend to harm. There is also the perception of others. I cannot believe the mother of the child thought anything other than her child was going to be harmed if she did not do what the robber wanted, and this is what the robber intended.

Can't understand the suggestion that no violence has been committed.

So who was actually physically harmed here

the name of the game is to create a scenario where maximum threat is presented so the victim has no other choice than to give them what they wanted. a knife threatening any child would get the thief full and unrestricted cooperation from the parent.

whether they were prepared to follow through on the threat is another (more worrying) matter.

Holding a knife at the throat of a 15-month old and tying a mother's feet and hands ... of course it is violence!

Assault. At Common Law, an intentional act by one person that creates an apprehension in another of an imminent harmful or offensive contact.

That's all that is necessary for a criminal assault!

Isn't this robbery, rather than burglary? There was a threat of force and, far as I know, this doesn't have to be directed against the owner of the property.

Yep armed robbery it appears.

It's a toss up between Robbery and Aggravated burglary. In reality it makes very little difference to what they will serve if/when convicted.

Agree re the offence but given the workings of the UK legal system, probably a year.... now if they'd have been speeding....
