The unexpected results from Monitor profilling

Hi all

Just thought I would post this tail of buyer error as a warning to others about to do the same.

I had for some time been using a ACER AL2202W 21 inch monitor on my Computer and although quite happy with the image I was tempted to go for something a little bigger and better.

Locally the only option for buying monitors over the counter is PCWorld, mail order was not an option at the time, so after viewing their offerings I went with a Samsung T240 24 Inch and to be honest was more that happy with the results.

I then got more into Digital Imaging and got the equipment to profile both my monitor and printers and at this point even resurrected the ACER as second monitor, it was during the profiling process that i discovered the problem.

Once profiled the results are shown by the profiling software as a colour swatch comparing the monitors results to popular colour spaces, sRGB, Adobe1998 etc. The Acer returned a result of only being able to cover the sRGB colour space, which was to be expected for such a low cost monitor but at least it did cover 100% of the sRGB space.

Then came the much more expensive Samsung Monitor which I though would be able to cover at least Adobe1998, but once profiled it returned a result of only being able to cover 98% of sRGB, so not only was my upgrade not an upgrade other than the size it was a downgrade.

So the warning is, when buying monitors do your research first and do it properly.

This was a couple of years ago now and its replacement will be better researched this time

Anyone got any recommendations for a 24inch monitor that can cover the ProPhoto colour space ;)

Lower your expectations to around adobeRGB and go straight to NEC or EIZO if you want the very best on the market.
