This was when I got my 500D and my bro was there with his D60

"Right before you start taking pictures, turn it to Av - NEVER use Auto" and I've never looked back

That's the best one. Years ago, when I was a student, I was commissioned to take some pictures of the successful university swimming team. They brought their mascot with them, who was of course a very attractive young woman in a bikini. Naturally I had to take some pictures of the mascot as well as the swimmers, and one of them had her sitting on the diving board; unfortunately I hadn't watched out for the background, and over her left shoulder there was a prominent notice. It said "Out of order during busy periods".:$
 
Use a prime lens with manual focus.

And for the umpteenth time, join a forum like TP, because it contains all the advice you will ever need.
 
Sharp and well exposed means little if your subject and lighting are boring and dull.

Look at the picture, not the pixels.

Vision first, technology second.
 
Dont take up photography it will cost you a fortune
 
Learn all the rules and then break them
 
don't listen to other people.
 
Don't shot unless it looks and feels right - savd me a shed load of wasted film

Always make sure your captions are accurate, there's nothing a publisher hates more than having to publish a correction.

Get out and about and find interesting things to photograph. All the talent and gear in the world comes to nought if you have boring subjects.
