Yes
have been driving for over 30 years... I would think I should have noticed the little secret on my dashboard that was staring me in the face the whole time...I didn't...and I bet you didn't either...

Have you ever rented or borrowed a car and when arriving at the petrol station wondered...mmm, which side is the petrol filler cap?
My normal solution was to stick my head out the window, strain my neck and look, try to see in the side mirrors or even get out of the car!!!!
Well ladies and gentlemen, I'm going to share with you my little secret so you will no longer look like Ace Ventura on your way to the petrol station or put your neck at risk of discomfort or injury.

If you look at your petrol gauge, you will see a small icon of a petrol pump?
The handle of the petrol pump will extend out on either the left or right side of the petrol pump?
If your filler cap is on the left, the handle will be on the left? If your filler cap is on the right, the handle will be on the right It is that simple!

I don't know how you feel right now but when I found out this morning I felt cheated!

WHY don't the dealers share such important information with car buyers?
I don't understand why this isn't in the Highway Code or even the car manufacturers manual??
I don't get why any mechanic I have ever been to or know has even thought of mentioning this to me??
The only possible explanation can be that all these people probably don't even know!

Go out and share the world's best kept auto secret with your friends as this is information is way too important to be kept secret.

so go and check the little icon and report back could this be the biggest secret known to person kind

Regards Mark

You can use any pump to fill up as the hose does stretch to the other side.

Unless you have a big car ;)
Sometimes they do reach the other side, sometimes it really is a stretch to get it to reach.

i say that would promote scratches and it is very tricky to do and i find people who do that offer slight amusement at the pumps with all them yoga moves they have to make to get the fuel filler in

this is only for a laugh

Same with Avensis, has an arrow. Cool bit of trivia though. To be honest I park at an empty pump and just stretch it around the car :p

Alas, this is not true.............

Damn, I was getting all excited then, I'd just cleared my trivia shelves out for more useless facts

I always go on the theory its the same side as your windscreen wiper controls? not sure if its 100% accurate but its worked with my last 2 cars!

As i'm entering the station I pull the lever that opens the flap to see which side it's on,

Or, as a rule of thumb:

Japanese origin - Left hand side
Commercial Vehicle - Left hand side

Everything else - right hand side...

if the wrong side of the pump is free i don't stretch it, i reverse the car in!

I don't know why more people don't do this? I have never seen anyone else do it...

p.s. I don't believe it, I've just googled for a shot of my cars dashboard and there is an arrow there, how have i never noticed this before!

I DO NOT BELIEVE IT. :nono:

I read you're post ,rushed to the garage in the cold, and found out you are
WRONG. More fool me.................:shake:

Mine a japanese, on the left ,where my wife sits......................Clever trick Wack......

Not always - Merc Sprinters have the pump nozzle on the opposite side but they do have an arrow pointing in the filler caps direction

which side is your wiper control on the left I presume!

Doesn't work on my MX5, but then not much does :naughty:

...and like normal peole, I pull into whichever pump is empty and stretch the hose round if i have too, even done it with Espaces, so good with most cars.

Well I was 'avin 'it - hook, line and sinker. :baby:

I've always had big cars - Granada estate (really wide), Audi 100 and Omega estates, and now a Discovery 2. I've never had a problem filling up on the wrong side. But I'll park close to the pump just to be on the safe side.

I notice filler caps are always on the otherside to your exhaust...........(I think).

Now you just need to remember which side your exhaust is on :bonk:

I don't know why more people don't do this? I have never seen anyone else do it...

Most petrol stations I've been to have a "way in" and a "way out" which means reversing your car to a pump so its facing the right way, can be a bit of a silly thing to do.

I just wait for a pump to come free which is on the right side, sometimes it takes up an extra 2 or 3 minutes of my life, but in the grand scheme of things I dont think I'll miss them.

I think all the new ford's have a little arrow on the dash by the petrol pump icon to tell you, at least the last couple i have had did:D

i just looked which side it was when i bought my MINI and then remembered. Simple really.
