During the York meet, it was decided that we really needed another frivolous challenge in F&C.

It was then decreed that we would look into the "S**t museums challenge", a simple challenge in which a photo or series of photos are taken in and around museums of spurious merit.

A few examples being: The pencil museum in Keswick, The hat museum in Stockport and the Mustard museum in Wisconsin

There's the Lawnmower Museum in Southport. I have an agreement with the owner for a photoshoot there providing he gets images. Not sure it's worth the effort!

It's worth a trip if you can keep a straight face. When this challenge is open for entries, I have one or two and they're on film.
 
The challenge is open for entries at any time, we envisioned this being a very long running thread, with maybe a few entries a year!
 
I've been to Keswick for years now and use it as my base for Hill walking trips and still havnt been in the pencil museum. Allegedly, it's a bit more interesting than you'd think
 
There is a barometer museum in Devon. This prompted my son to suggest a chair museum with just one wooden chair - which you are allowed to sit on on special days.

Radio, record player and early computer museum in the Martello Tower at Seaham, Sussex. (Including a record player that plays at 16rpm !)

At one point there was actually a law stating that any multi-speed record player had to have a 16rpm setting as spoken audio versions of books for the blind were distributed in that format to allow a longer recording time per record side (16rpm records were also commonly used by the US Army in WW2 to distribute recorded programs to military radio stations for the same reason). I don't know when that particular law was discontinued, but according to my dad he remembers his blind grandfather in the 60's getting loads of records of books every month through the post, which were probably 16rpm format.
 
From memory, there's a 'deformed animal museum' which I think is in Majorca but could be Ibiza. I know I went there a long time ago and it was actually quite interesting but a little macabre.

Nash the Slash, a Canadian musician produced a mini album in 1981 described as .....the first album playable at any speed. Being all-instrumental music, there are no voices to affect the realism of the orchestrations. Thus the album becomes a collection of electronic concertos, each movement being defined by the speed of the turntable. A turntable with speeds of 16, 33, 45 and 78 rpm, creates a different ratio within the pieces, yet maintains a familiar melodic drama.

Have you ever heard a 45rpm version of Dolly Parton's "Jolene" at 33rpm?

It's fantastic.

There's a gasworks museum in Biggar, and I thought there was a puppet museum, but apparently it's a theatre!

There used to be a collection of eccentric taxidermy at Jamaica Inn on the A30. Lots of squirrels in assorted dioramas/poses and things like that. Fascinating but rather macabre at the same time! A quick Google tells me that it's now a smuggling museum - more PC but less intriguing!

Felt a bit uncomfortable without my anorak. Talk about esoteric.
Some unusual stuff in there. Machines that belonged to Eric Morecambe, Albert Pierpoint (the last hangman of England, who also came from Southport), Richard and Judy and Princess Di.
So much stuff crammed in it was hard to get a decent shot of anything. Still, it was a morning away from SWMBO and the Wednesday cleaning routine; not a safe place for a man, any man!

Well...the owner of the Lawnmower Museum is so pleased with the shots from our visit that he is sending me some complimentary tickets to be used on a future visit. They will include an audio tour as well.

An opportunity not to be missed. Anyone want them?
