From todays Guardian some thouths to ponder on the use of camera phones and digital cameras

The rise of the camera-phone
Everywhere you go these days, there are people with camera-phones – many of us record, document, and upload the minutae of our lives. But, ultimately, should we be doing it just because we can?

I love having a camera phone - in fact I even wrote a blog post about it. Cos I'm just that tech-savvy.

I'm not sure they're necessarily subversive but they are democratic and fast.

wonders if canon will integrate a phone into its DSLR's. Would be a great twist on the 'camera phone'.

Camera phones are great, i love mine. When i go out on the town or just a general night out there is no need to take a proper camera because my 5mp with xenon flash does the trick :P. For proper photos though i have my dslr

i think they are good because it means everyone has a story to tell and say you was in town and a building just suddenly collapsed then you can get your phone out and take a few pics then send them into a newspaper, everyone is a citizen journalist.

the only downside to camera phones is that the ones with real cameras (us) get penalised and called perverts, peadophiles, terrorists etc. because the real criminals can get away with there camera phones.

I suspect in the near future they will seriously damage compact camera sales, as the quality gets better, less people will be willing to carry both, opting for the phone and the small quality drop (many will never notice) rather than buying both.

I had a bad accident just over a year ago and the local yoof that gathered to witness the paramedics save my life all had their phones out clicking away. None of the pics ended up in the press or indeed the internet (as far as I am aware) so no story was told  Wonder how many of them still have the pics?

Al ;)

Which phone is it? I have yet to find one that is quite good enough to replace a compact?

they seem like toys to me..i use my phone for calls
i have a little camera on mine and have only taken wallpaper for the display..some flowers

the question is what do you do or need to do with the images...if you need to take them in the first place

I agree. I'd go so far as to say that camera-phones will wipe out the lower end mass market compacts.

From the article "The rise of the camera-phone - Everywhere you go these days, there are people with camera-phones – many of us record, document, and upload the minutae of our lives. But, ultimately, should we be doing it just because we can?"

Should he be writing that pseudo-intellectual irrelevance "just because he can"?

Should we be questioning pseudo-intellectual irrelevance "just because we can"?

:p

Sorry couldn't resist.

On topic, if you want to record every moment of your life then feel free. It's a cool way to remember good times and imho is better than a diary.

Sorry, just thought I'd answer this.. I have an LG Viewty which has the 5mpx camera nad Xenon flash, but sure other models have better/same or similar.. The last LG Renoir I got January last year as an upgrade (which I sold) had an 8mpx camera with Xenon flash...

Haha, probably not ;)

It's just techno-gossip isn't it? A visual record to go with the txt and on FaceBook. No more meaningful than that, and instantly disposable. But every now and then, you capture something significant and relevant

i have no problems with camera phones (apart from the quality of there pix) but i dont really see them wiping out compact cameras i would always rather a dedicated camera over a mobile phone myself

the question is what do you do or need to do with the images

Is this a trick question?

You download them same as you would any other photie.

Don't think they'll replace dedicated cameras but quite amused by the idea that you can't take "real photos" with them.

Ive had a few camera phones - SE k800i/c902/LG Renoir/Nokia 5800, and the renoir was absolutly amazing. The quality was better than my then Panasonic FZ50 - the noise at all ISOs was minor grain compared to the smush at 800/1600 with the FZ50. All the manual controls you could want. Sadly the Dolby music thinghy broke within a month, and they wouldn't give me another, only the Nokia 5800 which camera is not a patch on it. :(

First thing I look for when changing phones is how good is the camera! (they all do a fair job at being a phone)
I also think it's good for anybody who likes taking pictures, takes you back to basics a bit were you have to think about what
your doing to get a good shot.

I only use the camera on my phone for reference points to shoot later or remembering prices, books etc. to look up at home later.

Although i was out the other week at Roseberry Topping and was asked to take a picture with an iPhone.
OK for some i guess but not me, i'd much rather have the money spent on the phone rather than a camera within.
