The return journey back to film :)

Wow, thanks for the replies everyone thats really helpful information... Steve thanks for the offer of the tank, if you dont mind I will pick your brains over what to buy so that I can have a go at this :D

I will definately be giving this a go soon :D But I do want to get one processed by ilford so I can see what the silver gelatin prints look like

Yes, it seems that the world supply of used film cameras is starting to dwindle. Should always get a good bargain though somewhere. Its just a matter of waiting.

Well, I managed to get the body, grip and control back for £125 which I think is a real bargain :) That was from eBay.

No problem.

You can either send a PM or email me at steve.smith.stuff (at) gmail.com (re-arrange with an @).

Or just keep it all on this thread for information for others if you like.

Steve.

Ah. You will have to be patient with me. I've never used Ebay, because I lived in South Africa until recently and that presented some problems. Partly seller caution - which was understandable - and partly the major hassle of trying to set up a paypal account and upload funds to it from an SA credit card/bank account. I tried a couple of times and then gave up.

This has been a very useful thread for me - having bought a film SLR again recently (but not yet used it!!) - and not been happy with the results from the local Jessops/Snappy Snaps etc. in the past.

Will definitely be giving the Ilford lab a try...

Cheers

tried ilford lab for digital this week and impressed, once get through roll in the bronica thatll go off to them. id love to try developing at home but all my free time has evaporated, maybe at christmas when i get a few weeks off

Timely thread as I'm getting back into film too. Need to dig out my developing stuff from the shed!

Any advice on scanners from those in the know would be great. ;-)

Is it best to scan the negs or the prints (negs I'm guessing)? What's a good scanner to look out for?

Everyone should try film at least for a "been there done it"......you can pick up an excellent P&S at a boot sale for about £2, film e.g. Reala as cheap as 75p for 36 exposures, and developed at Tesco for 99p...and an Epson neg scanner for as little as £10.
This is 75p out of date Fuji Reala developed by Tesco, scanned with my Epson V750 taken by a £25 Konica TC with 40mm lens:-

35 year old Kodachrome, scanned with my £8 s/h Epson 2480:-

OK, those in the know will notice V750 and 2480 mentioned and the price difference, well obviously you will get better results from the more expensive V750 but for computer screens and 8X10 prints the 2480 is very good.

V750, Fuji 100asa scanned @3200:-

2480, fuji asa same scanned shot @ supposed 3200:-

Any good scanner will scan prints, I've just thrown my Epson away that used a parallel port with win98.
8X10 print scanned with a very old scanner:-

Thanks for the scanner info.

Just got me an F3 to go with my FM, seems lovely and weighty. Now I just 'need' an nice 24mm AIS and I'm sorted!

Sorry to hijack the thread a bit.

We'll be awaiting James... :D

All this takes me back :D

film processing is easy enough especially B+W but most of the fun for me was in the printing first in my grotty bed sit with the windows covered in black bags and then luxury in my bathroom with the wife banging on the door

I found this PDF on the Ilford site, and it certainly seems quite complicated!

Far less complicated than using a computer , after 2 years I can just about send an email, and now I can communicate on this site. Probably why I've stuck with film rather than digital ;)

Nigel.
