Uploaded stuff to flickr for a while, never had a photo explored and then suddenly two today!?

No idea how they decide (does anybody?) but I suppose I'm quite pleased. Was pleased with the pics anyway as I did them for a friend (whilst it gave me an excuse to play with the camera after the firmware update!)

Thanks for looking

Fantastic photographs, and I especially the funny face pulling on your Flickr site.

I wonder if the process of "not over thinking" a photograph sometimes gives a more natural feel to the photograph, in contrast to trying to slavishly capture the imagine in your mind in the camera.

Explore is based on lots of things, but mainly get it by adding a few tags, adding the photo to a few relevant groups and getting more views and favourites than you previously have had on past uploads.

Congrats, and nice shot.

Really nice shots, Shaheed.

I could do with a few more views for my flickr...

Well done, nice shots!

I hadn't used my Flickr for ages, then uploaded a few yesterday, but I ran out of time so decided to tag them etc today. To my surprise this morning one had been explored even though it had no tags, was in no groups or even sets and wasn't on the map. It is a mystery!

I've had 9 explored this month. Not one is in a group.

In a post anaesthetic haze but checking now it seems another one got on! Truly random!!

It sure is a big mystery. I don't even try to understand how Explore works. The first shot has now dropped out of Explore by the way.

Yeah I know! When I first joined Flickr, it was an ambition of mine to get a pic explored in my lifetime. Nothing for years and gave up being bothered by it.

Had an op yesterday and got two in the day before. Was worried that it was a bad omen for the op!!

Based on the thread I half expected no tags or groups on these shots, that would have been random.

But the first one I looked at is in 63 groups! As I understand it that will reduce the likely hood of an Explore, but it will draw views/comments/favourites to the other shots in your set, which as they are in significantly less groups are more likely to be Explored (as I understand it).

That's what I mean. I was surprised when the pic in all the groups got to 87 on explore.

So, what is a "relevant" group?

I would guess one that draws 'genuine' views, comments and favourites, i.e. specific groups relating to the subject matter. By genuine I mean not those awful award/comment groups, which are widely considered to actually negatively impact upon an images chance of reaching Explore.

I try and only post to 'relevant' groups, as an example in my latest upload a few were added to the Sigma 100-300 group (the lens I used), and also to the Marwell Wildlife group (as that's where they were taken).

A large and varied contact list also helps if that's what you're interested in, I have contacts who will comfortably get hundreds of views and tens of comments within hours of posting without the need to tag or group, they often end up on Explore. I could post an identical shot at the same time and get 5% of the views and no comments.

I view explore as just being a "group"

A group that you have no control over.

If they want to display your photograph theirs no invite or anything they just grab it.

To me it means absolutely jack **** to have a photograph explored.

I have to say I'm sceptical about something that uses formulas etc rather than human eyes to judge interestingness!!

All I can say is that in my experience, placing photos in groups is not a prerequisite of getting an image in Explore.

I probably thought the same until I got a nice order for canvas prints from a hotel group in Andalucía after one of their guys saw an image of mine in Explore.
