The Queen

Unbelievably sad. I figured it was imminent when I saw both BBC and ITV had TV news specials on it all day from mid afternoon.
RIP our lovely Queen. :(

I just want to add my condolences. People may talk about a privileged life and that's undeniable, but would I swap her duty and dedication for my own life? Not a chance.
Whether you agree with the role or not, her dedication and commitment to it is undeniable.
RIP your majesty. Thank you.

be a bit weird seeing money and stamps with charles head on instead of the queens...they must have predicted this to happen sooner or later so i wonder if they already have a stock of notes and coins/stamps ready
They don’t have to change them in a hurry, the old ones are still valid!

I did wonder when they sold off Royal Mail whether that would affect out dispensation to not state the country name on stamps had been covered — particularly since the cocked up the sale of the postcode database.

I am an unrepentant, 100 carat, monarchist with twenty-nine years of service to Queen and Country. I firmly believe that a constitutional monarchy sets the United Kingdom apart from most other countries and goes a long way to account for the political stability we have enjoyed over the past few hundred years. As the head of the monarchy for the past 70 years Queen Elizabeth II demonstrated unswerving devotion and loyalty to the nation and the peoples of The Commonwealth and for that I feel deeply indebted.

God bless, Your Majesty, rest easy - job done!

She was Queen, but she was also Head of State. Just imagine "President Blair" or "President Johnson".

Unelected, born to duty, 96 for goodness sake.

It isn't ideal, but it is a hell of a lot better than many of the alternatives...

You just don't realise. As soon as I heard on the radio that the family were going to Balmoral I felt quite emotional. I'm not an ardent royalist by any means. But I do have an abiding respect for the Queen and the values she represented. She has reigned my whole life, and it feels like we are entering uncharted waters now.

I had an idea when the talk on the news at about 2pm that the writing was on the wall
when it said the kids were all on the way it was to me a done deal
i had the pleasure of being in the company of the queen in an odd situation quite a few years ago in 2005
it was a very relaxed situation and she was utterly pleasant and just part of the group
wonderful person and a great monarch , hard to get through to folk nowadays about duty and service
i have a photo of me with the queen which i have had a look at today and a good grin and a smile because it was such fun
RIP and bon voyage

I am 68, I have known only Queen Elizabeth on the throne and when her death was announced it was all I could do not to shed a tear. My own mother and father seemed to me, as a child, to be very similar in manner to the the Queen and Prince Philip. They died many years ago now and having Prince Philip and then the Queen die in such short order feels to me like I've lost my parents twice. Quite a sad time.

It is so strange to hear people referencing King Charles III, it's going to take a bit of getting used to.

And yes, if you hadn't gathered, I am a consummate Royalist.
It'll also be strange that at Christmas we'll now have the King's speech at 3pm.

A very colourful lady with many attributes. A smile most of the time, and a scowl when needed. To have still been at work well into her nineties, there won't be many of us that'll be doing that. Change happens all around us every day, but for all of my life she's been a constant presence. It was expected, but unexpected so soon after her last public engagement a couple of days ago. I'm glad she passed peacefully after a lifetime of service.

Undertook her duty with dignity and great commitment through some very challenging times.
Always a credit to her country when she travelled the world and earned respect from almost everybody

R.I.P.

Didn't expect this to hit me quite as hard as it has to be honest... I've always considered the Monarchy as the one bit of the "establishment" that I had some respect for, but didn't expect the impact of hearing the official announcement, and the words at the end "God Save the King."

As with any loss, my first thoughts are with the Bereaved - immediate family, and all the people that her life has touched in some way. A life of service to a Country and Commonwealth that she loved.

I'm proud to number many ex-serivce people in my circle of friends, and, as the people that have sworn an oath of allegiance to the Monarch it was touching to see how they've all responded.

The one that got to me most was an old mate from 2 Para... he's not the kind to gush. His facebook status last night read "RIP Boss, God Save the King".

I would like to thank everyone in advance for keeping this thread civil and respectful, and would like to ask anyone who has opinions that may possibly be considered as being disrespectful in ANY way to simply keep them to themselves - or if you MUST create a single thread in Hot Topics to discuss any perceived demerits of the current system. We don't want this thread to descend into a slanging match, and as such, moderation will be silent and unapologetic. I hate to have to even mention this but sadly over the years some members have proved themselves to have been brought up devoid of common decency, and that will not be tolerated in this thread.

Very sad news.
Although I'm fast approaching retirement she'd been Queen for a third of her life before I was even born.
Throughout her exceptionally long rule she served with dedication & commitment, and I think even the most dedicated rublicans must respect her.
She will be more than just a hard act to follow, we'll not see her like again.

I tried to figure out why I felt so sad last night and still today, quite simply she was for me our country personified, my allegiance was always sworn to her.:(

Yesterday I was shocked as many folk were, today I feel really upset as though I have lost a member of my family. The Queen was the head of state for my country of birth plus for the UK and other countries, glad in my lifetime that I got chances to see her while in Australia and here in the UK. She will be dearly missed by many many people.

The world has lost a wonderful, intelligent yet witty person, I could sense what was coming all yesterday afternoon, I was dreading 6pm and seeing all newsreaders already in mourning suits, my heart sank at 6:30pm and the announcement came, still teary eyed writing this post.

RIP Ma'am

God Save The King

I wonder how many of us actually saw the Queen?

For me it was just once many years ago, can tell how long ago it was because the earlier flypast was a Vulcan and Lightnings.
It was in an open or maybe glass top car on the Aldwych at the bottom of Holborn Kingsway one lunchtime

It was back in the 60s in Australia that I first saw the Queen so in Melbourne and Canberra, then again when she opened the marina here in Brighton. Prince Charles as he was back then I met him when his helicopter landed at our school in Kent, plus my late father met most of them.

For me it was twice. Once at Windsor Castle getting my Queens Scout Award and once in 1976 at a Silver Jubilee visit to where I used to live.

must admit, I fully expected him to take on Albert after his "mentor", Earl Mountbatten...
That would have been more ‘fitting’ than Charles though I’m referring to Prince Albert ;)

Saw her briefly on Baker St about 10 years ago. Went past in her Rolls Limo(?) and managed to get a quick video clip. Prince Phillip did come into our music class once too!

Boris Johnson has just delivered an outstanding tribute to The Queen in the House of Commons. Quite the best tribute I have heard or read so far, and of course not without good humour included. Very sincere and very heartfelt and very well received throughout the House without exception.

I agree, great speech. However, surprisingly, Theresa May is currently stealing his thunder and getting a ton of laughs during her speech. Not that it's a competition.

.... Also agreed. And absolutely not a competition. I think that Boris may have surprised a lot of those who normally detest him.

I felt that whereas Theresa May's tribute started off as being a bit 'standard' she then recounted some hilarious moments she had experienced with The Queen. The cheese on the floor especially made me laugh.

I haven't heard or watched any of the other speeches and wonder if there was anyone in The House who didn't feel a great respect and love for The Queen. If so they probably should not stand up and speak on this day of mourning.

So I presume Charles will need a Kings flag, new coinage, with him facing left. Renew Royal warrants. New medals for awards and service.
New passports.

The list goes on doesn’t it!

Will the sex pistols re-release an updated god save the king song...the country is in as dire atraights as it was when the origional came out

I saw the Queen as she came to visit Newcastle Under Lyme, I was a 10 year old standing by the roadside waving a flag. I’m 60 now and I treasure that memory. I really got quite upset yesterday, which surprised me but I’m not ashamed to cry but I believe some of it was from losing both my parents, thinking about how the Royal family would feel and understanding that void left when we lose a parent. She was always there for us. She devoted her life to serve us which she did with such loyalty. She was an incredible woman, mother, nan and human being. She will be greatly missed and may she rest in peace.

I very nearly met the Queen on her visit to the New Forest Show 2012. Managed to get a few photographs.

Also worked the Royal Train empty into Kings Cross, although leaving before any Royals arrived.

As for currency, I believe some Victorian pennies survived until decimalisation. The only thing which might change is the prediction that cash will become obsolete in a few years, otherwise I expect Elizabeth II notes and coins to be around for a while yet.

Yes, it all happened so quickly, with the announcement regarding concerns for the Queen's health, then the realisation that news was being witheld in order that the immediate family could pay their last respects. The photo of the Earl and Countess of Wessex said it all.

A very sad day, and the end of an era.

The power of photography.
