In short, I am new to film photography and a complete newbie. I have yet to get my first rolls of film developed, and was wondering the way you do this...

I have found some places local to me, who develop film. A couple are quite expensive, the other not so, and I was wondering how you guys go about this. Shall I get the film developed and printed, or get it developed and scanned to a CD, to see them and then choose what ones to get printed?

Also, anyone in the south west bristol who uses film who knows a good local developer?

If you're just starting to dip your toes into film I would recommend popping along to your local pound land, buy a couple of their rolls of Agfa film (guess the price!), shoot the film and then take it to the nearest tesco, asda (if your local ones still offer film services), Snappy Snaps, Max Spielmann or Boots. Basically anywhere close that devs film. The most you should pay for dev only on one of these places should be three quid. Then if you have the ability/gear to scan negatives then away you go :)

It's easy an rewarding :)

Be careful though. In no time you'll have a cupboard full of cameras and under your sink you'll have all kinda of chemicals and tanks and pots and pans and the like for developing your own!

Apologies for the mass of spelling errors in that post. Still getting used to this iPhone.

I should also add that if you don't have access to a scanner I would certainly recommend getting your film scanned to cd. Most places will supply you with an index print of all the photographs. I can't recommend anywhere close to you as I lam in the north west but I'm sure someone will be along soon to help.

It would be worth having a flick through the massive sticky thread on developing people though. It's very useful.

I suppose everyone has his/her preference. When I started shooting film,I sent my films to darkroom to dev+scan to CDs,as I didn't expect I would have any nice photo worth me get them printed. Then I viewed them on my pc and chose a few to print in the later time.

After 5 rolls later,I bought all the chemicals and equipments to dev by myself, scan and choose my favorite one to print.

Unfortunately I can't advise where to dev film in your local as I am no way near you. I am sure other members can help u with that.

It's not the way intend to develop my films going forward, but I also recently got back into film, and took mine to Asda for a develop and scan to CD service. It was £3, and I'm happy with the job they did.

Thanks for the replies guys. I think I know what I'm going to do. I know there is no real decent shots, so just a dev and scan will do!
