Yes
Just found an old trade price list from Graham Nash some time about 1989ish,

Fujichrome Velvia 35mm £5.30 120 £3.01 (£11.17 & £6.35 in today's money)
Fujichrome RDP 35mm £4.84 120 £2.74 (£10.20 & £5.78 itm)
Fujicolor Reala 35mm £3.49 120 120 x5 £11.10 (£7.36 & £23.40 itm)

C41 processing at £2.50 + VAT @ 15% a roll.

It's done not bad against inflation actually.

This is probably as good a thread as any to ask, why is 36 frames 35mm so much dearer than 120, as I understand it's got the same surface area.

It's the high cost of the gnomes that chip all those sprocket holes out...

Haha, those poor little buggers! RSI must be terrible.

@steveo_mcg, I would guess it's to do with all the processes that go into making the canisters, as well as inflated cost of materials compared to 120. As pointed out in the ilford factory tour thread, making 135mm films is a lot more convoluted than 120.

Canisters, more stuff to print on the rebate, sprocket holes... backing paper is much cheaper than a cartridge!

Good points guys. I generally assumed that the emulsion would have been the most expensive raw materials but probably not.

Those little plastic containers for 35mm probably cost slightly more than the packaging that 120 rolls come in - only by a tiny amount, but it all adds up.

120 - couple of stickers, backing paper and a bit of card. All done in the one machine. Looked 80s vintage or even earlier.
35mm - pre printed strips, cut into cartridge width, punched out with rebates so it can be picked up, velvet stuck on, rebate punched again, sliced into individual cartridge sizes, folded round, bungs put on, turned round right way, velvet aligned, film entry checked and ones not correct chucked away, then film is finally loaded...if film doesn't hook on then cartridge chucked again. Film is already pre sprocketed in whatever they use for that before it sniffs a cartridge...

I was :O at price of porta 35mm, and velva
Its 50% more per roll... So a extra 2 quid or more

But Agra from poundland is a pound.....

I was doing my Xmas shopping in Cardiff today, and in my befuddled state I somehow noticed I was walking past a Poundland. Popped in, then popped out with 5 rolls of the mystical, renowned Agfa Vista. Should keep me going all year . . .

@alfbranch I've got a pack of 10, current stock & still in date. I can send you them at cost if you want it, postage at cost.

A couple of the Poundlands in Leeds have had 36exp. in the last couple of times I've dropped by! I think I have 10 in my fridge at the moment and the little stockpile keeps growing...

can often be hidden away and tbh a lot of the sales assistants have no idea what film is let alone what shelf it's on if they have got any. If you can't find it it's worth going in before they get busy and asking the manager.

The Sutton in Surrey Poundland didn't have any Vista when I was there earlier in the week.

Might have to see what the local Poundland's got in stock. I was browsing 7dayshop earlier and saw the price of their film these days... Add on even cheap D&P and it's about 30p or more per shot now.

Stockpiling....Mmm I like that idea.

If anyone wishes to buy more agfa vista quid film than they are likely to need and want to pass them on to me then I'm glad to accept :D ( at cost price of course:p= ..............either posting out here, or better still, to arrange postage/collection next time I'm in the UK.

how many do you want ? the swindon one was 24exp, but im going to norwich tomoz :)

Ooo now how many can I fit in a case:)

Very kind offer Paul

If they are 36 exposures, then probably about a dozen if possible....maybe more as I "waste" this stuff doing different experiments....usually to keep you guys informed as to how versatile it is

I bought four rolls from poundland in Whitehaven today.

I keep meaning to ask at work whether any of our wholesalers can get us some cheap film, I will endeavour to find out this week.

Chelmsford branch of PL had a pile of film still. 24 and 36 rolls all mixed together though so it took a few minutes of rummaging to get a good pile of 36's

While film has increased in price over the past few years, the price of film equipment has dropped dramatically. Take a look at this catalogue from the big US-based camera store B & H in New York City:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/FrameWork/Product_Resources/SourceBookProPhoto/Section01MediumFormat.pdf

This catalogue isn't even that old and it lists the Bronica ETRSI as retailing for $2,221! You can easily pick those up nowadays for £200. When I see how much all of these different cameras used to cost when sold brand new just a few years ago, I feel very lucky that I can afford to buy and use many of them today for very little outlay.
