the plane that saved Britain

The recoil would have certainly shaken the aircrew and the airframe.

All of this ensures I wi be going bck to the IWM on my next trip to London. As a mid in London in the 60s it was a dhort walk to the IWM from where I lived bedide the Oval cricket ground. Visited ther the day after a fird broke out whicb caused damage to the dome.

Great place. Like Duxford!

I remember seeinv a photograph the Mistel FW190 atop a modded JU88.

The 88mm gun was tried on a HE 111 too. Must have been a massive shock wiyh its recoil. I think it was taken from an anti aircraft gun!.

same gun as the AA and on tanks IIRC

So I believe.

I think the biggest 105mm cannon on the Hercules AC130U gunship derivative called "Spooky" and "Spectre". That is fitted internally and is mounted to fire downwards from the side of the reat fuselage and loaded manually.

No doubt the work done during WW2 wih the mossie and JU88 was a pointer for the AC130.

Yip. The 88mm was originally designed as an anti-aircraft gun, and was also deployed as an anti-tank gun, initially in the Western Desert. There were several versions, and some of these were fitted to the Tiger I and II, and a couple of other heavy tanks.

I don't know how the recoil would affect an aircraft in flight, but they had a dampening system - I think it was hydropneumatic - and could be fired from a tank turret, so it must have been reasonably controllable.

Cheers for that.

Amazing how much memory is retained from all those years back!

Finally got around to watching this on 4OD. Quite interesting but I wish it could have gone into far more detail about so many things. The time wasted on shots of the presenter driving about could have been better used telling us a bit more about how it was built and gone into more detail about the raids (both famous and less known).

Glad I watched it though!

I agree but, as you say, I too was glad I watched it! Just the filming of the flight of the sole airworthy aircrsft was suprrb and made it worth the rest.

Now how about a similar programme on the Bristol Beaufighter, Hawker Typhoon and Tempest and even the Lysander.....

Steve

Yes! The Beaufighter is one of my favourite planes and there must be a lot of interesting cloak and dagger stories connected to the Lysander.

The Lysander was definitely one of the famous planes for SOE and other infiltration and extraction jobs!
