The Photography Show 2016

found new e commerce software to link to our Mini labs .
gotphoto.co.uk?

Don't like the idea of 12% plus other fees, plus their design seemed very 'childish'.

Too many people taking too many slices of the school photography pie leaves very little left for those that actually do the bloody work in the first place.

I'm working with a few others on a LR plugin that does QR code reading and data tagging at the moment, which is what their system offers.

Did anyone find a way around coughing up £12 for car parking? How far is it from B'ham Int. station car park to the NEC?

I'll be taking my camera along with me, as I'm looking to buy a tripod head. Hope I don't get classed as a nerd......... skinflint I can cope with!
I parked there yesterday and it was actually a lot easier than the NEC car park. There was no queues and it's all undercover walkways into the NEC through the station. If I was going again on a Sunday I would park there again, £6 for all day was a bargain compared to the long queues yesterday from the M42 into the NEC £12 car parks. Probably not good for Monday and Tuesdays with commuters there. The price was higher on weekdays too but I can't remember what it was.

I parked at the train station, half the price. Not a far walk at all. Just clock the ticket machine at the top of the escalators, not very well sign posted.

£9 in the week, it was much better parking there yesterday than the normal car parks.

Thanks. I'll probably end up biting the bullet . A £3 saving isn't really worth the hassle.

There's hardly any difference in the distance but, the que into the normal car parks were terrible so it's worth doing just to beat that!

I reckon the car park at the station is closer than any I've used inside the NEC previously

hanks. I'll probably end up biting the bullet . A £3 saving isn't really worth the hassle.

I'll be going for the station car park tomorrow. I'm expecting it to be less hassle. No queuing to get in or out, no waiting for buses or a long walk, cheaper and if it's raining only about 10m to walk in the open. I also find it easier to get to and from, always seem to be directed round in big circles exiting the NEC to get to M42 Junction 6

Worst case I can think of is station multi storey car park is completely full (unlikely?) and I'll have to drive a mile or so back to the NEC.

It must have saved me an hour plus on Saturday.

Went today and am there again tomorrow. I live in Coventry so always go by train. 10 mins and just over £2 return. Would agree this was one of the better shows. Didn't buy anything but will probably get some radio triggers tomorrow. Missed the Mark Cleghorn Photographer Academy stand not being there as there were always good talks on the stand. However visited the Flaghead stand and they are giving out vouchers for a years subscription to The Photographer Academy which is normally £49. Also, you can get a discounted subscription to Adobe CC inc photoshop and lightroom for £6.95pm instead of the usual £8.57.

Loxleys were giving away cards with generic codes for 12 months free basic membership of the photographers academy.

Cleghorn must be running it as a teaser / loss leader, as the basic membership doesn't allow access to all of the videos. Also, Adobe were offering generic codes for LR / PS CC membership reducing it to £6.85 p/m for a year.

Given this, is it against the rules just to post the code here for all to see, rather than just Photo show attendees?

Marston Green for free parking and 3 min train ride will beat any rip off parking on site. I am pretty pleased with Saturday and I may chance some late Tuesday reductions... A cheap tripod or geared head would do. 1/2 price Profoto B1 is perhaps too much to ask for :)

First time i've been at a weekend, and was pleasantly surprised, certainly felt less busy than the Monday I usually go on. I must say the whole show felt better this year, it also seemed like the spacing between stands and walkways was bigger too. giving it far less claustrophobic feel, which normally gets me running for the exit after about an hour!

I would have thought so, after all it is for delegates attending the show !

The Adobe deal is a very common deal. Not sure about the others.

I made a little video at my visit yesterday

Foolishly I picked a busy day to go, I usually dodge the crowds, but overall enjoyed the show. Managed to catch up with some contacts in certain companies and have a play with some new gear.

The usual :) plus pens and sweets galore of course ;)

Oh and a ridiculously good deal on an xt10... They were all selling the body at 379, you get £50 cashback from Fuji and £80 px on any dslr or csc you fancy trading in. However LCE gave me that £80 discount too without me trading anything in! So once I get my cashback, £250 for a brand new xt10 body. Win

Bit late for you all but I decided to catch the train today, I live in Brum so very easy. It was that or go later and leave when traditionally the car park staff have gone ;) jus kidding ....

Hi Jonny. Wondering if you are still reading this? I went yesterday and ran out of time and wasn't sure if I would be able to go today. Is there any chance of getting a reduced rate ticket for the second day? I wouldn't make it until the afternoon. Fingers crossed.

Very many thanks for posting that, it's a great overview of the show. I had to spend a day at Crufts with my dog a few years ago, and it was so horrific I vowed never to go to a big show at the NEC again, but that looked fine - interesting and not too busy, so entirely based on your video I will probably go next year. Thank you!

Thank you!!!

To be honest I would have preferred a quieter day, usually go on the last day and I'd recommend that to you too.

But even on a day like Monday you can dodge the crowds for the most part. I hope you have a good time and feel better next time.

Just about. Have pinged an email to you I think.

Managed to get the same deal for x-10 from LCE. I was told that was the last one they had in stock.
Quite happy with the deal.

I rocked up today, it was pleasantly quiet and people were very considerate giving way to wheel chair users and an air or politeness prevailed. Some very good bargains to be had and some excellent presentations Swift entry and exit which is good. Food and debris left on tables in rest areas (as in previous years) not so good.

Managed to get a couple of hours there this afternoon. Rewarded with bizarre statement of the day, from Canon.
I had just picked up lens catalogues from Sigma and Tamron which I am pleased with as I am getting very confused by the wide range of new offerings around.
So I rock up to Canon and ask if there is any hope they have any lens catalogues still available

"No we don't have any. Actually we did not bring any with us this year as we thought everyone would want one."

Err, well, yes.... So now I have a couple of very helpful guides from 3rd party suppliers, could even have picked some up in addition on individual lenses if I had wished to. So now 3rd party suppliers are not only doing excellent lenses at lower prices, but oddly, they actually want to get customers to BUY the lenses. Unlike Canon apparently.

Had another good afternoon there overall though, except for toothache. I had not realised there is a big retail outlet on site, only 5 min walk from Hall 5 and some nice landscaping, beach and lake it sides. Missed all this on Sunday as I walked from the north car parks and the retail and lake is towards the south car parks. Wish I had realised, would have taken a break out there part way through Sunday. Would have been some nice backdrop for Cosplay photos.- i was really nice the Comicon folks were there at the same time as he photo show.

Does Future do a prize for the best designed / displayed stand? Some of the more imaginative ones were very good this year. I liked the funky lightbulb display on one of them.

Thanks for all the positive feedback (sadly the parking at NEC falls outside of our remit!). We have had a great few days and are now off out to have a few drinks. Hope you all enjoyed your visits, grabbed some bargains and loved the speakers. Cheers!!

Went to the show Sunday and today, must say I enjoyed it more than last year and the bargains were great yet again, saved a few hundred on some new kit! Look forward to next year :)

I thought the parking was well organised, though not cheap as it cost me £12 for only half a day. I did not get there for the early rush though, so did not queue in or out. Overall I think the parking is fine, given the number of cars they have to deal with.

Hope everyone from the show has a great evening, you must all be so tired, you all did a great job entertaining us.

Again, probably outside your remit Jonny and I'm not having a go at you personally at all, but surely the NEC is a good target for terrorists with large crowds and what a great disguise with people with camera bags containing - well, lucky it was just cameras, lenses and other personal items?

I attended yesterday and was surprised there wasn't a quick check of my small bag - and after this morning's terrible news, it was lucky there wasn't a terrorist strike in the UK today. Last December we went to a coffee shop in Paris and had our bag checked there (as well as the various tourist attractions.)

As I say, probably not in your "area" at all Simon as it's much more an NEC issue for all the other events as well.

@JonnyS On a totally separate note, is there a feedback form to complete as I do have a few (kinder!) thoughts, as well as some constructive comment to give ideas for improvements?

I think an email questionnaire is sent out to all the delegates who attended if I recall They know who actually turned up as we were 'scanned' in on admission. People should automatically get invites again next year too.

Yes, I think you're right - searching through much grey matter in my head now :)

Hi Edward,

Yep, slightly out of my remit! There is a feedback survey coming today or tomorrow and rest assured we read all the comments. Indeed that is where some of the improvements to the show have come from.

Cheers

Jonny

Hi Jonny

I've just completed it - and hopefully the comments will be seen as constructive criticism and ideas for next year.

I should say that an event as large as this must have some large challenges at times in the last few weeks and at the end of the day it must be said that this year's and last years have been very enjoyable.

I think the only complaint I have for the organisers was they'd run out of show guides at 10.00 on the Tuesday morning, it does make it hard to find the things you've specifically come to see without it :-(

Other issues were either for the NEC or exhibitors. I found it very frustrating to travel all that way with the specific purpose of buying things only to be told they'd sold out - bring enough stock! Bizarrely, one stand had sold the dividers out of a £250 kit case (despite them not being advertised as for sale). It was the only one of that size they had, so they've still got it!

Yeah, that was a tad annoying, but as we left on Tuesday (about 4:30pm) someone had found another box of guides and were giving them out to people as they left....

Hi Gerry

That was an error on our part and I'm sorry about that. A miscalculation I'm afraid.

Jonny

I have always wanted to get the guide before hand and found this year a mini version in a camera magazine which had everything I needed... Only problem is I can't remember which magazine it was in

O that looks like I didn't post any of it. The second paragraph is my comment...
