I get a nice colour leaflet with any photography magazine which i buy lately from The Photography Book Club. I was thinking about joining but obviously you are obliged to buy a book every so often etc..Is this a genuine offer or a catch? Would like any advice or opinions please before committing to it. Thanks

Was chatting to a friend in the pub last night about book clubs, and she was recounting a bad experience she'd had with one a few years ago. I think we both decided that you're better off just getting the best deal you can online ... you may spend a few more pounds on the first book(s) you pick, but you're under no obligation to buy further books, especially when those further books may well be no cheaper than Amazon or Play.com anyway!

If you want 'how to' books then the book club would be fine especially if its digital info your after.

If you are after books of photographs by famous and not so famous photographers then the second hand book shops are the places to go. Hay on Wye is a good place to start there are 25+ book shops in the town some with large photographic sections.

I prefer to go to the odd s/h bookshop I might see on a day out and usually I am able to pic up a bargain. Seeing the work of others and being able to constantly refer to it is a wonderful way to learn about image making.

Good luck - James
