Well the penny has finally dropped I tried a few shots in RAW
and the embedded editing RAW software in CS3 make life so much easier
But you lose a lot of definition when saving as a jpeg file.
The gif file has a lot more definition ( to my eyes) and the jpeg has a green cast, same picture just two differant save as commands
The other thing I am having trouble with, I downloaded the windows RAW file
viewer but it won't open the files in preview I get "failed to load the image"
Thanks for the help on my "RAW" thread guys:thumbs: Its early days yet but first impressions are good

Er, don't use gif. Use jpg.

#
# In view of the limitation on the GIF formation to 256 colors, JPEG is a more commonly used format for digital photographs. JPEGs can save information on more than 16 million different colors and use more aggressive, lossy compression which has a less noticeable effect on photographs than it does on images with sharp edges.

Thanks Pete but the top jpeg image look "worse" than the gif or is it just me?

The jpg looks fine to me. Maybe its your monitor? What settings are you using to save jpgs? You really really really shouldn't use gif's.

The gif looks terrible

Loss of texture, and its very noisy.

Once resized at around 600px I just use the highest setting that will alow me to post ie less than 150kb round about 8 or 9

:p :D

Any ideas as to why I can't get the windows raw viewer to open the files?

Maybe your RAW file from the camera is not supported

or you dont have

Micros*** .NET Framework version 1.1 or higher installed

Ok Thanks for that Its a 400D and I think that it is supported?
i'll check out the .Net framework thingy too

Also check for an update as the 400D was not included in the original version of this software.

I take it your using Win XP Service Pack 2 or newer, as you cant view raw in older versions.

Yep XP Pro SP 2
The image data say's its a "_CR2" which is supported occording to the download options
I can open other files JPEG etc in the raw veiwer but not raw I am not having a good day so far :D

if you go into advanced options for the viewer and make sure CR2 is ticked, after that its wait for the update from micros***, as i think there is more too it than just being a .cr2 file.

I ticked all the options just because I am greedy :D
Ok So I guess its wait then Cheers

you can always use bridge to view your RAW files, and as its integrated with CS3 very nicely its easy and quick to use.

Thanks for the info, I will give it a try. Its just that I am used to having preview thumbnails when I open a folder in windows, on my desktop, then choseing how to open the full size. But I guess I will have to get used to this, until good ole Billy Gates gets around to letting me do it my way
