Yes
Day 4 of PlayStation Network issues with no ETA on fix and it looks like Microsoft have got their issues under control (good news for azure users!!).

Not a major upset, but you can't help but feel bad for the kids that got Destiny or some other always-online game for chrimbo that hasn't been able to try it yet.

I just wanted a bit of GTA Online time before work starts again on Monday :(

I wouldn't hold your breath. In 2011, the PSN outage lasted 23 days, and 77 Million user details (that were unencrypted) were stolen, (wiki here), Sony were fined by the UK ICO £250,000. With Sony paying a further $15Million fine!! (linky). It doesn't look like they learnt any lessons.

This PSN outage isn't the same, its a DDOS attack not a breach apparently. Either way, despite the fact its caused chaos online, you can't help but be impressed that a very small group of people (3 supposedly) disrupted major services to this level!

I'm not sure how impressed anyone should be, I suspect a lot of it is down to lack of security at Sony and Microsoft. But then I'm a cynical b****r that's seen some horror stories when it comes to IT solutions and data security.

Gaming is fine on my PC, not sure why anyone bothers with consoles at all tbh...:naughty:

Impressed not from a morality standpoint, but that 3 people managed to bring a set of cloud services to its knees. Not ethically admiring it for one minute...

And gaming on a PC? Was doing that a decade ago, and would never go back, although EA servers were down too so that included PC users :p as my friend was ranting lol

I thought it was simply a DDoS attack. All you need is control of a net of infected machines and Bob's your uncle. Not much you can do about it TBH.

There are actually quite a few mitigating preventative actions that could be undertaken by any enterprise in order to continue providing service at a cost.

But yes, it seems that they are giving them the runaround. It would be good to see them get caught and another botnet put to sleep. I'm like neilc28 impressed with bringing down the cloud services. That will require some might army to get done.

Why would I play in poor resolutions with low frame/pixel/polygon counts on a TV with a crappy controller on a toy you can't upgrade? Everything I play has been unaffected.

That toy does everything me and countless others need, just because it doesn't meet your standards for FPS and polygon counts doesn't mean to say its bad, and since when has 1080p been a bad resolution?

I've been there with the PC gaming and as at least 5 of my days per week are spent in front of PC's and servers I prefer to crash on the sofa and de-geek with a playful shoot-em-up, everyone's different :)

I got my lad the Xbox one for Xmas we managed ok on Xmas day, I think because I down loaded Unity 3 days before thinking that MS would be inundated by demand, then this happens.

140 odd million affected.

Maybe there could be, it's a long shot I know, but here's Ryan the hacker dealing out his reasons and laughing.

I can just Picture a Russian/Romanian/Capo di tutti capi: gang boss consoling his son on Xmas day about his Xbox or PS and wondering who he could Whack, when all of a sudden.......................................... De derrrrrr http://news.sky.com/story/1398435/xbox-hacker-reveals-why-he-attacked-consoles

I have been playing @ 2560x1600 for 7 years, multi-screen for years before that. It's extremely productive for work, photography, video etc, none of which are possible on consoles, hence their status as toys IMHO. Yes, I have played them an we've had them from MagaDrive/NES days up to the present Wii/XBox, compared to a decent PC, they just don't cut it.

I totally agree about the need to play games to wipe out the memory of work, but I want mine to be the best experience possible and that's never going to happen on PS/XBox et al.

indeed. you'd like to think Sony would have thrown a lot of money at this sort of thing.

however we don't really know what Sony has in place or how extensive/relentless the DDos was. You could blackhole as much traffic as you like but if they keep adapting the packets, sources or destination address you'll be chasing your tail for a long time trying to sort it out.
