This one is only 4 months over

I think you missed my point... or i missed yours.

and you know this how?

Well its not going to drastically change in size (bigger or smaller), or become round! You can change things for the sake if it as some do (take Dell, always changing their range & specs every 3 weeks).

Depends on your definition of new? The new handset was the original iphone, the current one is just an upgrade, of an upgrade of an upgrade... the basics are the same, but better memory, processor, similar style, better camera etc...

I would guess that the next couple are unlikely to be radically different looks wise.

Also, are you counting 3G to 3Gs and a whole new model? or just 3g to 4g?

if 5 comes out in june 2012 then they have re designed the shape every 2 years! IF!

Unless you don't want/need the minutes&texts&data then you need to be comparing the price over the same period of time, i.e. 18months. That makes the cost benefit of buying the phone outright a bit less.

Why anyone would we willing to spend up to £700 just on a phone is well beyond my comprehension

I can't get a price on a 12 month contract with o2, they only do 18-24 month contracts on my home page, they do have them, but i can't see the handset price..

Why can't you comprehend £700 on a phone? Do you mean that you don't own a smart phone of any type? or you can't see why pay £700 up font?

The costs are all there no matter what way round you do it... you either pay more per month and get a phone free, or pay for the phone, and pay less per month!

the difference between the 3gs and the 4 was vast. There are things that aren't going to change because of the nature of the device - size and shape.

But that doesn't mean a new phone doesn't have a differen't body shape and features in the hardware. Ergonimally the iphone4 needs improvements. The button at the bottom also sticks on mine and a few of my friends so there are improvements needed there. The antennae can be improved - added connections for different devices etc etc there are endless ways the hardware can change

But thats hardly a 'new phone'. Antenna is sorted in the 4s i believe, the button is not a prob for me so may or may not be a 'design fault', doe we really need more inputs??

There are some big differences between the 4 and 4s, the 4 was a big change over the 3gs, but what has changed in the last year or so that could have been added? It seems to me that people are too hung up on the 4s tag.

I wasn't speccing everything that would consist of a new phone. You asked what could change and I offered a few suggestions. I can offer more and no doubt you'll tell me those don't make a new phone either.

How about the wireless charging technology, virtual infra red keyboard? 3d technology? The fact is if you think that the phone the way it is right now can never be improved upon from a hardware perspective then you are easily pleased. There are many new innovations coming this way.

The 3G to 3GS and the 4 to the 4s are evolution. The 3 to the 4 and the 4 to the 5 is revolution.

There's a surprise! Samsung following along.....

This is the next Google Nexus phone (this time made my Samsung) and it's been coming for months. It's not a reaction to the iPhone 4S. It will be the mobile that launches Ice Cream Sandwich.

Or the fact that Apple has that Walt Disney/Tom Hanks effect on people, where the company can do no wrong and thus having the effect of making everyone wanting to buy the latest iteration of the iPhone (and iPad) no matter whatever the cost. Even the early version of the iPhone4 had issues and bugs but it hadn't put people off.
Apple could manufacture microwaves and stick the lower case "i" in front of the word Microwave and stick the apple icon on it and it'll sell by the million. That's how it is with the company.

However, this post isn't meant as a disrespectful comment on Steve Jobs, he was a shrewd businessman and had the magic touch. I'm sure that if he was put in charge of Nokia or Samsung, everyone will be breaking out in paroxysms of orgamsic delights at the latest hint of any new developments from them.

Not quite. Apple tv hasn't been a runaway success since it's conception. In fact if you compare it to other apple products it has failed. Only now as it starts to tie into the ipad2 ios5 mirroring will it start to become a success. The reason the other devices are so successful is because they are so well designed and fill a very specific need for a lot of people.

No, but I don't know what people expect in just 14 months or so since the last phone. No doubt, we will get 3d at some point, maybe we will get wireless charging, of course in time it will be improved... I remember having a computer with a 32MB hard drive, in 5 years time phones will probably have 500mb as a standard.

The point I am trying to make is that people are hung up on it being called 4s and not a 'new phone' and I don't know what constitutes a new phone. To me it has enough changes for me to consider it new.

There is also people that don't like apple, and that won't buy an apple product even if it is the best, jut to save face! The fact that they don't want to go with the majority of people and want something different, and that's totally fine.

I have a friend who can't stand apple, even if some stuff is better, he won't admit it, and will constantly argue that another device is better for what ever reason.... I suppose this is the same the other way round too!

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, there are loads of decent phones out there.... If you don't want an iPhone, don't buy one! Simples!

Apple's marketing is very clever, keeping everything a massive secret is one thing, as it gets everyone guessing what's actually coming!

There are a few apple products that have failed tho, not everything with an "I" infront sells! As above, it's the quality products that do!

Hi. What's the best way for my wife to upgrade to this phone? She is with O2

Depends how long she has left on her contract? If she is not coming to the end, then she will either have to buy out of the contract and get a new one, or just buy a phone from the apple store..

give o2 a shout and ask them what the cost will be if any, or logon to their website. if youre not due for upgrade you have to buy yourself out of your current phone. im due for upgrade in Jan and i think it would cost £140 just to have an upgrade of some description from my HTC desire.

Mine are ordered.

Got 5 coming. Will post results of comparison with the 4 if anyone is interested. Not that I expect it to be night and day better.

You have 5??? Its only 2 per customer on the apple site? Unless you got from vodafone?

Her contract ended a few months ago. She was waiting on this phone

She can do what ever she wants then! If she wants to move to another provider, she will just need the pac code from o2 and the number will be changed to the new provider!

O2 won't do anything till next week! But she can't get the phone till next week anyway, so have a look round the net for the best deals!

i'm thinking its probably due to an agreement with apple. Give them the first few days to get all the preorders done before the deals come out.

Why can you order now with T-mobile and vodafone then?

Right, think I have decided - wife to have my 4, and i will get sim only on voda so that in a year when 5 comes out i can upgrade easily.

Just a question on data? How much data is 250mb a month in day to day use? I only use internet and email when out and about, get around 10 emails a day, normally not too big in size. the odd attachment to download, say 2 or 3 a week which may be 4/5 mb Internet is checking TP, FB and a few other bits like train times etc... Will that be enough?

So she cant pre order and upgrade from o2 now until when? release day? when its all sold out?

wtf?? when i pre ordered my htc desire, TMobile sent it to me a few days before official release. i thought O2 will be taking up pre orders now and send them out for delivery like next wednesday or thursday to get them delivered to people by next friday

Have a look through for old bills mate, thats the best way to gauge what you use, i have been between 300mb and 500mb each month! And with all the features of the phone, it uses the web a lot.
I'm with o2 at the moment, and you can log in online, and check every bill!

Unfortunately o2 havnt updated the site for the 4GS yet... so she can't pre order from them until they decide to offer pre orders... its available on the 14th october, so everyone will sell it then.
Personally, i'd wait for o2 to list it, then have a look at vodafone, and see what they are both offering! Its not a problem changing networks, she can keep her number no problem!

Give o2 a call when they release it, and see what they say!

Anyone heard of giffgaff? Seems loads cheaper!

GiffGaff is a pretty good proposition, it runs on o2 (the company is 50% owned by them as well). The £10 "goody bag" is very good value with IIRC 250 min, unlimited text, unlimited data. GiffGaff also offer free 0800 calls.

Yeah I have looked into it! I have worked out how many minutes I use, and i'd probably need a higher tariff with them, so its not a massive saving over the year.... prob works out £50 cheaper, rather than getting a sim only with o2 direct!

Also, you won't get the visual voicemail like you do with o2....
