The Official Fuji X10/X20/X30/XF1/XQ1 Thread

Might get out and about with the X10 a little more, would like to get some photos of old building in and around the City. Would like a good part of the street, and a good few building in the scene, wondering how best to pick the focus area?

With the zoom set to wide angle it hardly matters. Most of the scene will efectively be at infinity.

Fuji X10 Naples. RAW developed in Capture1 then Silver Efex. I found this while looking for something to try out C1 with.

So I bought my wife an x30 for Christmas and I have to say the image quality is fantastic and the colours are everything I hoped for.

My sister also has an XT1 and after a fair amount of playing, I don't think the Fuji UI is for me (which is lucky as I'd been getting GAS for some Fuji but am now happy to stick with Oly). However, the X30 is perfect for my wife and there is no doubting the quality of the jpg engine, the lens and the EVF is pretty damn good too.

I loved my xf1 and keep looking at the x30...then get distracted by the x100t and its IQ...then think 35mm would be too restrictive...

Bloody cameras

Hopefully a simple one... How much does iq differ between an xf1 and an x30?

Almost certainly some...probably

Shame I've bought an rx100 mk2

As the roads to Imber are open at the moment I took advantage of yesterday's sunshine for a visit. I decided to use the X30 instead of the RX10 and shoot as if I hadn't been before. I'm quite pleased with the results. A couple are below and the rest are here. They're all OOC JPEGs, with a few having shadows lifted and just one slightly cropped.

I don't understand why the second photo isn't displaying as it's fine in the edit window. And now it is displaying. How confusing.

Yeah its a cracking camera for sure love using mine and my wife uses it for some odd shots at weddings of table decorations etc and they are good enough to go in the book

In the real world, at prints up to A3+, very little.

Did take a couple of identical shots with them but completely ballsed up and did them at VERY different ISOs!

At a quick think , I'll list what I prefer about each over the other - YMMV!

XF's pros...
Pocketability
No chance of accidentally knocking the EC dial
Shares a model name with my car!!!
Wider lens
Neat fitted case

X30's pros...
EVF as well as a rear screen
Tilting rear screen
EC dial rather than buttons
USB charging
Hotshoe for OCF
Faster lens
Longer reach

Despite the X30 having more pros than the XF, if I had to keep just one of them, it would be the XF, almost purely for the pocketability.

I've not posted much from my X30 recently, but here's a shot taken during yesterday's caving trip.
What makes it for me is the reflections of their caving lamps.
Very simple lighting; two little LED video lights to the right of the camera and a bit of fill-in spotlight on the face of the dad.
The cave is Eastwater and the is the bottom of the Canyon. The way on is behind them and they have their feet on the 'roof' to stop themselves sliding into the tighter bits below.

Fascinating photo as always...

You should publish a book with all these in
LOL - I don't know about that :)

It was an awkward location to shoot - certainly don't want to drop anything!
Although at first glance it looks spacious, but you can see the 'roof' is only about the same height as the Dad's shoulders. There are other parts of this trip where it was not possible to turn your head over - this is positively OK.
Mercifully, there was a trench which I could stand in and could move around to set up the shot.

The X30 did very well with this shot!
Hand-held at 1/2s, ISO 1600, f2

Gaping Gill, Yorkshire - Largest underground chamber in the UK (by volume).
Lighting is a pair of LED video lights either side of me plus the cavers head torches.

Stunning work as always

Still waiting for your book... You can self publish you know :)

Can't remember if I posted this here... A quick pano on the way back from the school run. I boosted the shadows heavily but even in jpg it handled it well.

I forgot about the quote for that one -
"Stop it! It makes me look all teeth and nose!"

***** long pause *****

"You know, I have a big nose, a big mouth, and big eyes... How do I manage to fit all that on one face?"

Leather cases - for Fuji X series as well as Leica, but at a price! Particularly like the half case with rear door.

They're great cases. I've had several over the years for my Leicas and latest for an X100 I just sold. These are cases that can be passed on down the generations if the cameras survive! For my X30 I decided to give the Gariz case a try and I'm pleased. OK, they don't cover or protect the screen but they do have a metal base complete with tripod thread, which I find particularly useful as a lot of my shots are done on the tripod. For around £50 they're a very good alternative. Pic below. More HERE.

Impressive colours this morning, even the fuji struggled! Believe it or not I actually desaturated this a little...
Poor composition etc, just a record shot to see how to deal with the colours.

Edit: I think the posterised effect in the red is actually cloud.

Grey and grim here this morning in contrast to yesterday.

Just wondering what strap you have there. I've got a Toma leather strap on mine but find it a bit wide and inflexible. I was thinking of getting one of these cord jobbies instead, but still like the idea of a leather strap to go with the Toma half case I have.

It's this one but in black. They're fantastic straps and decent value, too. This is the third one I've had on my cameras and is perfect for smaller cameras and rangefinders.

Yes, I looked at Footprint straps but the chap who makes them is not currently active. The story behind that is here. Warning - not for the squeamish!!

Holy crap!! That's awful. He's a lovely guy, too. I've spoken to him several times and every time I ordered a strap he delivered the following day. Amazing service. :(

I've got Cordweaver wrist straps on my X30 and RX10; my favourite being the Cordy Cat in Woodland Camo.

I tend to make my own wrist straps from paracord. A handy thing to learn and to have. ;)
Just got a peak design neckstrap for Xmas, and it's pretty smart.

I contacted 'Luigi' regarding a case for the X30. Unfortunately one hasn't been designed for this yet but could be in the very near future. I've got a feeling that the rear tilting screen may prove to be a problem.
