Thank you

Looks about right, doesnt look all that grainy to me. Take a look at the exif data to see what iso it was, for 400-800 that looks about what i'd expect.

Also worth bearing in mind with these cameras - diffraction will set in at a lower f-ratio. On most dslr/lens combos the sweet spot is usually f8-f10, whereas on the x30 it's around f5. Shooting at f11 can leave things looking mushy.

Ps. Also worth noting that raw will almost always need some work. That image above needs highs pulled back, shadows raised just a touch, some very picky sharpening, a little saturation, and VERY conservative noise reduction. Don't go too crazy and you'l be surprised what raw can deliver. It will also ALWAYS look worse on your computer screen, and will ALWAYS look worse to you. Other people are way less critical and less inclined to pixel peep. You should look at the picture as a whole, without zooming, the way your audience will.

All solid shots al, i like the mono. The colour version could do with pulling up the shadows, seems to be a thing with this camera i've found - i always have to pull them up by 15-20 in lightroom, regardless of the rest of the exposure.

Quick snap grab with the X10, I know it is a poor photo but in my defence I was walking the dog. I was walking my dog and I tried to take a photo one handed, not the ideal situation. But the girl was just stood there outside the shop, she was just asking to be photographed..

Looks like the autofocus grabbed the shutters which is a shame. Still looks good when viewed small though, very nice light and not a bad model ;)

I've found the x30 great for walking and shooting one handed, it's the first time i've ever had a built in level.

Thanks...

As I said I did this one handed so camera was not steady, as being pulled by dog. Plus no idea who she was, so I took the shot quickly. Pity really, as this could have been a good photo.

I like the lighting on that photo........

Bit of a golden hue on her face

It was taken 7PM this evening, lighting was pretty good. This could have been a really good photo, the main ingredients were there. Lovely free model, she was just stood smoking outside a shop, plenty of free good light. Just lacked the finishing touch, I failed to make good use of what was there :coat:

Thinking about taking the plunge and swapping my X10 for an X30. Feedback on the service, delivery times etc for DigitalRev would be welcome. I know a few on here have used them recently to get the X30.

I've got the lens hood/filter/lens cap kit and find the lens cap a bit fiddly to fit. Can tell you that an Optech mini hood hat is far simpler to put on and remove. It's a loose fit but my camera is in and out of a bag all the time (I don't hang it around my neck) so does the job admirably.

AL
I didn't think much of the included cap either but a 58mm cap from the bits box fits much better.

I just got my X30 from Digitalrev and I got a great service and quick delivery with no customs or import problems and I enjoyed tracking my parcel all the way from Hong Kong . They are quick to reply to emails and I even got an extra £10 off the price by asking on their thread on this forum

I know someone who could be letting go his X20, I did have a quick try of it ages ago. Just can't remember if it was much better to use than the X10, regarding the viewfinder at least. I have been using my X10 a lot more lately, but frustrating not being able to use the LCD screen, I just can't see it while out on the street!

Start saving for an X30 - the EVF is so good I rarely use the screen.

True it is similar to many dslr's for quality.

I thought I had my next camera lined up, was just waiting to pounce when the right one came along. Just the last few days, been thinking do I really want to struggle with no viewfinder again!

As a genuine package she looks like she would make an excellent model, though the fag spoils it for me.

Is there a way of viewing x30 .RAF files in Windows Photo Viewer?

Thanks,
AL

I don't normally have the courage to take a photo of a person, especially so close and her being aware I was taking a photo. Would have been brill had she had her hands on her hips, while pouting. Glad I got the photo, even though it is a bad one. I would have been annoyed with myself for ever more, had I walked on by :)

Probably not if you do not have the right codex on your computer.

Why not use Irfanview http://www.irfanview.com/ it is far better and is far more useful and will show just about anything and it is FREE.

Just checked... looks like I have the correct codex, or photoviewer is picking it up from irfanview.
I am using windows 7. I can also see the thumbnails in explorer But it could be gathering those from the in inbuilt jpeg in every raw file.

You can get the Windows camera raw codec pack from microsoft
Here http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26829
Then just follow the instructions.

But still get Irfanview it is invaluable

There is a microsoft camera codec pack which sorts it for most. Windows 10 seems to have broked it though :(

Thanks Terry. Downloaded Irfanview and although it showed the full size pics it didn't show thumbnails - which is what I wanted. I've now downloaded Faststone which looks OK for my needs.

Read this https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/IrfanView
is shows a few of irfanview features including thumbnails which display in a windows explorer like structure . You can copy past remove and open the shots directly into an editing program like photoshop or what ever you have. Or even use it as an organiser.

I use irfran view for batch converting entire folders to another format or size. Or both at once, It is quicker than any way else i know of.

Just upgraded the firmware on the X10 , wonder if it will give it a new lease of life? Things I have noticed, it says ( aperture value was incorrectly displayed as "F2.2" even if actual value was set to "F2.0 ) I have had this happen a few times, when camera will not go to F2.0 , so hopefully this should fix this. The new Q button seems good also :)

Now to get out and experiment, to see how this relates to real life shooting :)

Is this new firmware, or just a camera that was never updated with the last firmware (year or more ago)?

It is Ver.2.00 Just I have never updated it since I had it. The aperture displayed as "F2.2" even if actual value was set to "F2.0 I have had this happen a few times, hopefully this should fix this. I am assuming Ver.2.00 is the latest one  Don't know if it makes much difference to shooting conditions, will just have to see if any difference.

Just got myself a nice case for my X30 off amazon - really nice quality and looks great

(Sorry photos from phone)

Not bad for £10.99 :)

Could someone tell me what the viewfinder in like on the X10 compared to a DSLR? Also what is the dynamic range like? I have watched/read a couple of reviews that says they are pretty good, Thinking about picking one up (GAS :P ) for a few upcoming trips abroad that will suit the camera I reckon, Would look at the X20/30 but at the price of the X10 only going for around £140 these days it will give me a good idea if I fancy going down the road of having a camera this size etc. as I fancy doing some street stuff & B&W etc. as I don't want to walk about with the big DSLR gathering unwanted attention plus it would mean then I would take one less body and lens saving me weight and room on the airline carry on.

It is nothing at all like a reflex view finder.it is a direct vision optical finder, and like all such it is subject to the normal parallax.
The X20 added some data on an ovelaid lcd into the optical path but is otherwise similar.
the X30 excanged the optical finder for a fully integrated lcd finder, which is as good as they get.
All three produce excellent results for their generation and are fun to use.
The X30 functions and feels like an advanced camera.
