The Official Fuji X10/X20/X30/XF1/XQ1 Thread

Hi Kev, I used CS6 and then picked the red channel and converted the image to 'Greyscale' which deletes the disregarded channels. Then duplicate layer and select 'Multiply' as the blending mode. I then used a white brush to lighten the foreground and a black brush to darken the sky a touch. I then took it back into Lightroom and added a gradient for the sky which bumped up the clarity, raised the highlights and lowered the shadows. Then added another gradient for the foreground to raise the shadows and lower the highlights, again with a touch of clarity to pick out the flowers rather than just have them as a block of white. A touch of sharpening (50) and a touch of noise reduction (20) finished off with a -10 vignette.

Also used the spot removal tool to delete a few birds from the sky.

Sounds an awful lot of work but it took me about 5-10 minutes if that.

Anything else you wanna know then just ask. (y)

Thanks, it would take me ages to do all that...

Looks great. Followed all the LR stuff but in cs6 is that basically using the red channel only? Then the multiply is effectively dodging and burning the result? I'm crap with PS

So you didn't just press the "convert to black and white" button then ?

Kev, it really doesn't. I enjoy playing with images in Lr mainly but to isolate the red channel I use Ps (not sure if Lr can do it?) I like the red channel as it makes the sky darker than the green and blue channels.

Hi landwomble. Yes, open your image and then click the channel tab and uncheck two of the channels to see which you prefer. Then click image (iirc) and mode (again, iirc) and then greyscale. That will then disregard the unused channels and create a b&w image. Right click and 'duplicate layer' then choose one of the blending modes from the drop down menu, again, pick one that suits you and you can also change the opacity to suit if it's too strong. I suppose the multiplying is d&b.

Damian, I have been known to press that button on the odd occasion. :D

Got a "read error" message on Thursday night when looking through so photos so have formatted the canard and ordered a new one, just in case it happens again.

The card is a PNY one - never had issues before so may be a one off but am not going to risk disaster

Thanks - is that a 'shop of have you changed the cover ?

I O/T posted this in a for sale thread, I didn't realise there was a thread for them so I'll post in here too :)

Does anyone "pocket" this camera without a case? I have a black one, and I love it, especially shooting B+W or with the Velvia filter on, but I have the Fuji case which makes it a little too bulky to take everywhere, but I'm paranoid about carrying it round without it.

I shared my test shots around ( https://www.flickr.com/photos/sjrobbins/sets/72157639191120716/ ) back when they were on offer and I think I "sold" 4 or 5 of them.. cracking camera for the money :D

No Photoshop here. :D

Yes, one of the new skins from Japan. Cost me about £14. Took me about an hour to do. Picked it up from the post office this morning and started as soon as I got home. Peeled the red off and then got a cotton bud and some white spirit to remove the residue then just stuck the new one on. Also got a 'practice' skin to try first but I didn't bother so I've got a spare if I fancy a change. (But I doubt I will) The new skin also feels nicer than the OEM one.

Yes SJRobbins, I just have it in my pocket when going out and about but have the Crumpler case above as I chuck it in my work bag and don't want it getting damaged.

Has anyone managed to get one working with an off camera speedlight? I've tried the built in slave modes on my 565ex, and tried adjusting the timing on a syk5 optical slave but no joy.

I've ordered one of those cheapy cases - the official one is pretty naff - it's expensive, bulky and because part of the camera is exposed, doesn't offer that much protection, as I found when I dropped mine and (of course) it handed on an exposed corner :(

Geum, David? Lovely shot but looks exactly like the Camellia that's just outside the conservatory.

STeven, the Crumpler case is top notch quality, very well made indeed!!

landwomble, keep an eye on it, when they start over exposing shots it can lead to the dreaded lens error.

Here's a couple of images from mine today.

No denying that this is an AWESOME tool!!!!

Argh, b****r. Its not done it since but I want aware sticky irises were a thing on these. Just tried sticking it in A now, stopping down to f11 and taken a pic in the subdued lighting outside and it looks OK. Presumably this is a fair test...

David, I can’t help noticing that one or two of the images you put up, this one and Donald in particular seem thin, like underexposed film/prints. Is this something you do in PP?
Comparing the richness of colour and depth of the black in the Calendula shot with the lens, I just wondered if it was deliberate.

Took the xf1 to the park with the kids and whilst shooting I got the Lens Control Error. I turn it off and an and the error has gone. Over the last few times I took it out i noticed that in AV mode when i expose for the subject, it was too dark, do not know if this is related.

Example of the under exposure. I was focusing at the pole in AV mode:

XF1Error by SEP9001, on Flickr

1/350 sec at F4.9, iso 100 25.6mm

Do the setting look incorrect?

Thank you

Have emailed fuji support, see what they say.. :(

Hi Rhodese. This is indeed intentional. Would you prefer it deeper? (As the actress said to the bishop)

Hi David,
David you present your images the way you want them seen, what others think is of no consequence, unless you have asked for an opinion or if it’s a paid job.
I asked because the little X cameras usual output has greater contrast.

Keep those pictures coming, I wish I could do more.

Kev,
It shows as 2.4 stops under in ACR. Do you have any exposure compensation dialled in?

Rhodese.

Yep, it's getting some use Joe. Although it had a rest this weekend and the D7000 has had a go. Really enjoyed using it as usually the XF1 goes most places with me.

As for the lens cap, not sure you're going to get one for a fiver but eBay would probably be the best place.
