Yes its stepless - as smooth as you like, you can either use the toggle near the shutter button like most compacts or use the control ring which is FBW for a finer control. I time it at 2 seconds exactly from one end of the zoom to the other which is pretty normal and I haven't had any problems with battery life, although I tend to shoot fairly wide most of the time anyway.

I see it as a bit of a poor man's RX100, except its really good in its own right; the focus speeds are so, so much better than my X10 and XF1 were.
 
On the xf1 with regards to custom c1 and c2 settings how do you change the mode for example aperture priority,etc or does it just stay in "Program" mode..wanted to set a custom mode with aperture priority but for the life of me cant do it??
 
Using the mode dial, set your chosen mode then go into the shooting menu (page 4 of it) and set the C mode you want to assign to the chosen settings.
 
Thanks mate I was putting the dial to c1 then trying to adjust it doh!!!
 
I must say, whoever does the ui on these cameras could do with a smack! The in camera raw conversion is brilliant but utterly impractical for use on more than a few images...! Wish adobe would improve their support for the x-f1 and x10 sensors.

Yes, sorry, User Interface. The camera's great, and could be even better with the right software.
Still takes excellent pics though. The in-camera RAW conversion is marvellous. Worth shooting RAW + JPG and comparing the results. Plain RAW doesn't look right in PS at all.

Photoshop Raw converter is now much better than it was with xtrans sensors.
I understand that they have tweaked it again for the next distribution.
The silverfast raw converter, that they give with the camera does quite a good job, but is just totally horrible to use.

Which version works? I'm on LR 4.3
 
no its pretty damn good although I wont lie I did think of returning it and putting the funds towards either a ricoh gr or another sony rx but its growing on me and for the money pretty hard to beat. I will get another rx or ricoh and when I do this will go to the other half but have to say bang for buck it cant be beat.

Ok, so tomorrow will see me shoot week 6 of my 52, mineral. I have the shot in mind but I'm taking this little baby to make use of the shallow dof. Will swap to jpeg and see if I can make them work.

Will post the results here too if I remember.

Only if you know how. In using a raw converter you are taking things in to your own hands. What come up on the screen first is just a starting point, and can be no better than a jpg. as it is using the same presets.
A bit like seasoning your food ... a Jpg is a ready made product, and like a food manufacturer might put in too much salt or sugar for your taste. so you have the opportunity to adjust things how you like them in raw.

Yeah its a bit silly comparing a raw to a jpg, its like comparing exposed film to a final print!

I've always used the RAW files from my X10, xf1 and XQ1, even before they "fixed" ACR to do it properly. They've always been more malleable than the JPG's just like any other camera system and if, like me you do a lot of B&W conversions, you just can't do it properly from a JPG.
 
Yes I know this, I'm well seasoned with processing raw files. With my version of lr the Raw files are not acceptable. I am not the only one to notice this.I am hoping that this is fixed in later versions which is why I asked you...

I would say it is now perfectly usable But Adobe still have a little way to go before they can cope with the mosaic as well as they can a Bayer one.
Though the grapevine is saying they have made a major improvement for the next version.

Adobe's notes on the upgrade from 4.3 to 4.4 say
  • This release also includes improved support for the X-Trans image sensor in Fujifilm cameras, such as the X-Pro1.
and, as it's a free update, it's got to be worth trying.

I was really thinking to buy the x20 or possibly x30 when it comes out, looks small, has a fast lens and from what i see take some great picture. But I have been reading so many bad review relatively to battery life that now I am totally confused.

I'm planning on small travelling/treking so possibly 10 days without electricity. I read on diverse place that 3 battery were recommend for a day of shooting. So if you go on a treck for 10 day, do I need to bring 30 battery with me? I know I'm excagerating and will probably not be shooting all day long but I'm sure you see what I mean. Any of you struggling with the battery life?

While making my mind to weither or not to buy a x20, I've decided to re-give a go at an old film slr (olympus OM1) because in case I like it, it can give me a battery life of 2 years!

I find no problem with the battery life, but it will depend on how you use it. I have three spares (Look alikes that I bought with my earlierX10) but only once have I need to change one while out.
The new batteries for your OM1 will not last as long as the old mercury cells. you cant rely on longer than a few months with wein cells.

Great shot..I was going to try and get out with mine today but never happened.:( Going to see how I get on with the new sigma I have ordered and may even sell off the xf1 yet..
