Reminds me of a few weeks back, at Paignton Pier, my wife used her Panasonic TZ30 on full auto & the length of the pier was in focus. I used my Nikon P7700 (an advanced compact like the X10 I used to own) on my usual A mode at f2 & found part of the pier in focus but most of it not. I know I should of changed the setting but forgot :whistling:
 
This is my first image on the X10 thread having bought the camera in April. Its a shot taken from a wedding where I was a guest.

Taken in programme mode in colour and converted to B&W in Lightroom from the RAW file.

I picked up a copy of Lightroom 3 from here a few weeks back, so still getting to grips with it. I'd like to create better monochromes and was wondering are there any plug ins for LR3 that would be of help in converting?

Good morning Andrew,
I was hooked on monochrome many, many years ago. I was always envious of people who could draw, in particular charcoal / soft lead pencil type stuff. Then I built a darkroom, a proper job in a small bedroom, and voilà, I to could create an image the way I saw it.
I have little to no experience with Lightroom, so I’m not sure about plug-ins and such. I do have a working knowledge of Photoshop and it’s used as an extension of LR. Though Photoshop is a long hard climb to the top of a hill you will never reach, it has to be the best tool I ever invested in. If you are serious about B+W then in my opinion PS is the way to go.
A free version of Photoshop CS2 can be found at the attached link, it’s a start. There are loads of tutorials and videos on tinterweb, (You tube, Adobe). Get it before everything is on CC.

Now, thats a nice image and well away from the "clinical" feel Ed mentioned. Mono suits the image and gives it a timeless feel. Apart from the lady front left with the bare leg, that could have been taken anytime within the last 50 years.

Just my opinion but digital B&W never looks as good (in prints) as "proper" silver prints done in the darkroom. Even multi black printers can't really give the same look as darkroom prints however much time and care is taken in PS/LR etc.

On the X-10... I've actually just sold mine on. Not because I didn't like it but because (as I've said many times before) the XF-1 does pretty much everything the X-10 does but in a more pocketable skin, so while I've left the X-10, I'm still in the Xcompact family! TBH, I was going to keep the X-10 but a friend (who I'm trying to talk into signing up here but is currently just a lurker) wanted one for his wife who wants to take pictures better than snaps but can't be doing with a DSLR or CSC.
 
I was hoping to capture the sunset behind The Shard earlier this week, but the weather has been awful with pretty much complete cloud cover. But we did get one clear evening:

It's 4 shots stitched together in PS Elements 11. I also bought a new phone, a Nokia Lumia 920 which has a very decent camera. Here's a test shot from Greenwich using the built in Panorama feature:

Thanks for the kind comments. The colour image looked quite 'busy' so the b&w conversion toned it down a bit.

It's my local park where I walk my dog and the young Nepalese lads were smoking de erb so got searched, and me being me had to snap it :lol:

Not really. Not a lot on there neither. More pictures here is all I can say. :)

Where is everyone? Hopefully capturing images.
 
I'm still using mine quite a bit, weather permitting.
Did think about selling it to maybe get an X20, but love the thing too much plus the second hand value has dropped dramatically.
 
Ordered mine on Fri from DigitalRev arrived today, batteries charging now

Morning all - just a quick one from last weeks visit to marrakech using my shooting from the hip technique. Posting this one in particular just because I like it, but also because the light was gorgeous, but as you can see, very dappled and the bikes were moving but the X10 coped admirably with it. I have lifted the shadows a bit in pp but otherwise this is pretty close to original.

Golly, what an arresting photo, Yvonne, with much more than transient appeal. Has, too, that slightly surreal quality. Talent will out!

Thanks Pete. Shooting this way means you can see what you want to get, but no guarantees you will get it and if do, if the camera focused on the right bit. I have another taken a second or three later, which is just the mule and cart, without the cycles, but the guy on board had turned away unfortunately - still a nice shot, but loses something for that. ;)

Liking that Yv especially from the hip. The dynamic range is awesome..
