The Official Fuji X10/X20/X30/XF1/XQ1 Thread

One of the things that has most impressed me about the X series is the low light capability - performance well beyond that of 3-4 year old DSLRs! Up to ISO 1600, images SOOC will go acceptably up to A4 and ISO400 will go to A3+ with very little visible noise (as long as the exposure's good).

Here's hoping that the xmas post doesn't hold my latest aquisition up too much!

Well those above are all ISO1600 [apart from carnaby street, ISO1000] and have had between a 10 and 20 nudge on the noise reduction slider in lightroom, which is a very small amount. Looking at the high res versions, I would say printing to A4 would show minimal noise, anthing bigger is going to show more, but then you really shouldn't be standing that close to anything bigger

oh yes, meant to include this one too.... my decorations assistant, using the pro low light thingy

It's a GF3 - not a G3. The GF3 uses the old 12mp sensor. Were these OOC JPGs or RAW? If JPG, I can well believe the Lumix results. Using RAW improves the output considerably though it still isn't brilliant.

Yep, both were OOC JPGs.

That has just got to end up on a christmas card. Love it....:)

That has just got to end up on a christmas card. Love it....:)

That cat is so gorgeous - it looks like it's used to posing for pictures!

Thanks both, I am trying to get a christmas photo of each of them [6 of the furry monsters] and perhaps the dogs too... wish me luck!! :cuckoo:

Anyway, here is the next one, this is Abbie who has spent almost the entire day asleep under the tree. I love the angle on this, but the wire is a problem. Will probably try this again without the fairy lights.

Abbie is beautiful ...It might have worked better with a few candles They don't need wires.....

Dry resin filled pine needles and naked flames are not a good mix.
Move the wire! :D

Definitely worth another go as both cat shots are wonderfully lit and very festive.

 my thoughts exactly, I shall be trying again. One of the others is currently under the tree but of course, it's Maisie, aka Miss Bloody Awkward, and she is round the back, right by the extension socket for the lights, not the most photogenic position :bonk:

I have to confess I had to resist the urge to correct the colour balance on the them, to keep the warm, festive glow but was worth sitting on my hands

Another one... may I introduce Mr Stupid, otherwise known as Dizzy, brother to Abbie and looks super intelligent. Sadly, looks are deceiving, but he is adorable :D [not the same one as the original fairy lights cat, that was Ella, but they are both silver tabbie & whites so look very similar]

I did manage a couple of ok ones before he went off to chase the bauble he removed from the tree this morning.

...and please do say if you are getting bored of christmas cats :exit:

I know the internet was made for the sole purpose of posting cat pictures, but really...

 thats brilliant!! Love it. Shame about the focus [the one in the background I mean ;) ]

I thought that was the tail of the same dog.

Very amusing piccy and a perfect antidote to all the cat piccies.

To redress the balance, here's my cat Marvin.
If he were a dog, he'd be the sort of dog that would expect you to fetch your own stick. He's not chased Christmas decorations since he was a kitten.
but he does aim to spend his entire life snuggled up next to me, so I can forgive him a lot :)
On the X10 front, this was taken in full idiot mode with the flash up. I've tried taking his piccy with the big camera and it's a real struggle to get this much detail in his fur and still keep the exposure looking fairly natural.
The X10 really has done a fantastic job! :)

 the camera has done very well indeed. I have same problem with the 2 moggies, cameras idea of cat hell, black and white cats. I tried one of maisie in her less flattering position and even using the low light mode, was surprised by the amount of detail on the blacks, and only a tiny amount of blowing on the whites. The big 'test' will be Mumble, he really is half and half and I nearly always end up having to fiddle sliders when using the big cameras.

OK, a couple of test shots, in total idiot mode this time [EXR + flash]

Maisie, black and white cat - detail quite good, highlight control not bad either, but did have to lift the exposure a bit in LR, the white fooled it a little perhaps.

Thimble, one of the terrible terriers...feel free to add amusing caption, as she was NOT remotely amused ;)

That's not what I call idiot mode!

EXR is where the sensor magic gets released producing 6Mp images with intriguing capabilities; but I've never got on with the results.
Adv is where the pixel pixies live merging separate images together for panorama and low light.
Idiot mode is the one that has a symbol that looks like a camera and announces itself as Auto - Automatic mode setting according to shooting conditions. !

Be interesting to see if it makes any practical difference to the end result...

Right - I've been inspired by other threads on TP...
Please take up this challenge!

What's the best shot you have taken with your X10 in 2012. :D:D:D
Just the one please.

We've had SO many amazing photos posted in this thread; this could be properly good!
I know it's going to take me a few days to decide which image I want to represent my photography as the X10 has really done me proud.

Hi All... some lovely shots past few days. Love the cat/dog theme :)

Some great shots from you Yvonne!

Dave - that dog shot is brilliant - full of humour and character.

BTW - auto better than EXR mode IMHO. More control over the settings in auto which is odd - it's usally the point and click mode but thats actually the EXR mode on the X10.

Duncan - that's a very hard decision to make :( I will have to look through my 2012 collection to try and decide.

Been a little while from me since I posted any pictures. Normally I wouldn't post a sub par set but as it's been a while since I've contributed any pics thought I'd post. Last week I was at a friends art movement in Brixton... order of the day was art created live. Incredibly skilled bunch. Was asked if I would like to put some of my pictures up at the next event (a kind artist friend was talking up my photos bless her) - not sure my stuff really fits into the art world and will have to think about what angle to take as I've never even tried to print my pictures. Anyway some landscape orientated piccys from the event...

What are the general opinion of this camera? Im really tempted by it, ive noticed its at an alright price at the minute but still way more expensive then the Nikon V1/J1. Ive been considering swapping my DSLR in to get a mirrorless because the only time I take my DSLR out is when I know im gonna be taking pictures, otherwise it sits at home and the amount of time ive missed some great shots because I dont have my camera and have had to use my iPhone is really annoying.
As an example, im going Christmas shopping tomorrow but wont be taking my camera, no doubt therell be some great opportunities to get some great shots of the Christmas lights and decorations in the street, id love a little mirrorless I can slip in a coat pocket and forget about until I need it but can still hold its own when I take the camera out to get some snaps. Any thoughts?

Souldeep - as we've come to expect, those are fantastic
Congratualtions on the exhibition invite.
My 2p on the subject. Listen to their advice as they will have a good idea what might sell. A rule of thumb I was given by a gallery - green doesn't sell. My own rule of thumb - anything that the viewer believes that they could take if they were at the right place at the right time will get loads of praise, but will not sell; most landscape photography falls into this category.
Enjoy the experience and learn from it!

Thrash - I'm guessing you haven't read back through this thread yet - we love the X10 and are constantly being impressed by its results :D
When it came out there was nothing to match it.
Now all the manufacturers have released new models that can compete with the X10 for image quality, but the X10 price has kept dropping and the newer models are typically double the X10 price - so the X10 is still pretty much in a class of one.
In terms of reviews, give dpreview a wide berth; there's something deeply suspicious about their testing and what they have to say about the X10. There are far better reviews from other websites with a reputation for caring about image quality including Luminous Landscape and The Online Photographer, plus excellent field tests by Dan Bailey and contributor to this thread LindsayD.
I suggest doing some reading and letting us know what you find.

Thanks. I'd have liked more of its nose in shot.

That set is most definitely NOT sub par.

Thanks for the reply, I did have a brief look through before posting and I must say I was impressed with some of the photos that were posted, they look very good indeed. My friend has a X100 and I think thats fantastic, I havent looked at dpreview but ill be sure to ignore it :p I dont really know what im looking for and with so many brands in this market now its confusing, with DSLRS I stick to Canon and Nikon but ive heard the Nikon 1s are way down on the list and well Canon have only just entered and their model seems to be out of my price range. Im just looking for something which is capable to replace an SLR for someone who just does this as a hobby and doesnt get paid, most websites say none of these can replace a proper DSLR and id agree if youre a professional doing paid shots and make money from it but I dont.

Right - time to pick my favourite X10 image from 2012.
As Souldeep says - this was not easy!

I almost picked one from last weekends Mendip walk and its wonderful sunset, but that's too recent and my judgement is still being affected by pleasant memories from being there. A stronger candidate was my recent Snowdonia trip where the winter light was astonishingly good and the X10 delivered shots I'm genuinely proud of and are of good enough quality that I would happily stand them next to the best landscape images from my big cameras.

I almost picked one from October's walk round Cheddar Gorge, the light was once again superb. October's set from the beach at Shurton was always going to produce a few candidates, and as a photography day out ranks as one of my most memorable from the year.

A lot of my Summer shoots, the X10 was used, but the stand out images were produced from the big cameras - which is a shame as there are a few really nice images in there but are overshadowed by images taken on other cameras. Hence it's the ones from earlier in the year where I was relying more heavily on the X10 that jump out from my library.

Shots from the early part of the year include a couple of fantastic festivals, my Copenhagen trip when for the first time I decided to leave the big camera at home and only take the X10, plus of course the monster trip to the Isle of Muck in January when the weather was way too bad to use the big camera and the X10 took a huge amount of punishment from salt spray - it still hasn't missed a beat!

My two ARPS images taken by the X10 were created in 2011, so I can't go for the easy option and pick one of those!

I've just browsed my entire collection of X10 images - having deleted duffers and duplicates, it seems I've kept over 8000 images!!!!!! Goodness knows how many I've actually taken!
The image I'm putting forward as my favourite X10 image of 2012 was taken at my local pub on Valentines Night. The evening was a zombie themed party titled "Dead Romantic". This is Lillie dressed as a zombie bride and isn't a set-up shot, it's obviously not candid and not really sure what you call them!
i-XKLvXX6-X3.jpg

For me this sums up the best qualities of the X10.
It's a social situation and I was there to enjoy myself - the images and pleasure sharing those images has given me is a bonus.
It wouldn't have been appropriate to have been waving the DSLR around, and despite the horrendous conditions the X10 did extremely well and image quality is very acceptable.

Thrash - I need to respond to the DSLR replacement thing.
It depends what you shoot!
The big weakness of all compact and mirrorless systems is focus.
None of them have the instant response you get from a DSLR.
If you take subjects where you can get away with half pressing the shutter to pre-focus (then re-compose and shoot) there will be no issues as this works for tricky AF subjects in all lighting conditions.
There are continuous AF modes that help (a bit) and some camera models are better than others, but at this point in time if mega-AF is important to you, then you need to stick with a DSLR.
Relative to other compact and mirrorless systems, the X10's AF is probably middle ground. For comparison, videos of the EOS-M look slightly slower.

In terms of X10 image quality, there's no issue!
For example, two of the 15 images in my ARPS panel were taken on the X10 and printed to A3 it is not possible to tell which ones they are.
Pixel peeping is a different matter :bat:

Thrash, I don't think any compact type camera can be a true DSLR replacement - DSLRs are so much more versatile as a complete system. However, cameras such as the X10, XF1 etc are so compact in comparison that a DSLR kit can't beat them for portability. At the moment I have an XF1 - the guts of the X10 with a different lens and I'm waiting for my cheque to clear before the seller posts my latest purchase, the X10. Not as ultimately pocketable as my XF1 but with a few advantages (mainly a faster lens at the long end and the ability to accept a remote release). The interchangeable lens systems (Nikon 1 series for example) have advantages and disadvantages - they are versatile (the Nikon will accept any F mount lens with an adaptor) but to get that versatility, you'll need an assortment of lenses as you do with any SLR. The fixed lens Fuji X cameras

Aaargh! Wrong button and now lost my (tenuous when I'm this knackered!) train of thought!

Thanks for the props Duncan and Dave :)

Duncan - that’s an interesting and surprising choice considering some of the absolutely stunning landscape shots you've shared with us this year. Totally not what I'd expect you to submit but a cracking shot nether the less. Oh and the name of the type shot - Portrait - and it's quite likely I'll submit one of my portrait shots as that has seemed to get the most positive feedback from you all on this forum this year. Great reasoning on why that shot is your submission.

Dave - the shot is lovely. Colours great and crescent moon tack sharp in that shot.

Duncan – thanks for the tips. I understand your point that’s why I haven’t accepted although I think I should if I can think of an angle. As you say - although people compliment my photos I don’t think they are the type someone would want on their wall. Apart from a few portrait shots I don’t think I’d want them up either hehe I need to come up with something new, and unique, using my photos to make them sellable. Watch this space ‘cos I love a challenge ;-)

time to get some festivity going in here! one of these was a raw, the other a jpeg, pretty good testament to the camera's jpeg engine i think.

Very tasteful decorations Essexash - and nice colours. Good choice to take those shots in natural light :)

Martyn...seriously, below par? Stop it, right now! :p

Duncan, favourite X10 shot of the year...thank goodness I haven't had ours that long  I am also quite surprised by your own choice, I think its a perfect example of the flexibility of the camera but also thought you would have chosen a landscape. Sort of glad you didn't though

LOL - I don't like to be too predicatable :D:D:D

I almost gave myself a huge problem justifying myself in this thread.
I've just submitted into the "Your Most Amazing Images of 2012" thread, they asked for one image taken for someone else and one for pleasure - here's my post.
Both those are from the big cameras, but I got as far as pasting in an image from the X10 instead of Moonrise over the Brecon Beacons, and only changed my mind at the last minute.
Here's the X10 image.
i-THRpMJV-X3.jpg

It's Cheddar from Cheddar Gorge.
The reason I almost picked it for the other thread is that this is an image I've been after on many occasions and this is the best capture yet.
In sunshine the contrast is way too high and in flat light it looks boring, but this is just about right!
I swapped it out from the other thread because it looks a bit wishy washy compared to the nighttime landscape. It needs a bit more breathing on in PP, including giving the rock face on the right hand side of the gorge a bit more punch.

a few from cape cornwall today. Hoping the weather will either turn into storm conditions or for the sun to come out. Grey and washed out doesnt do anyone any favours.
