The Official Fuji X10/X20/X30/XF1/XQ1 Thread

[/QUOTE=I understand now - thanks for clarification. Firstly lets clear up the ladies man bit. I have the hair style of a highland sheep and sharpness of lowland one - so can't say the ladies are knocking down my door but it's me so hey [/QUOTE]

I'm sure your modesty does you justice, Martyn, but the ability to make the ladies look years younger is bound to increase the female flux through the Souldeep portals I should think. Anyway, didn't I see a very attractive image referred to as "GF" offered under the smoke screen of ProFocus , or does that just mean "gorgeous female"? I am a couple of generations distant from familiarity with popular communication.

[/QUOTE]Only time I tried an SP mode was earlier this year with a sunset I posted from Dorset. I will explore the Portrait Enhancer as I'm sure your recommendations means it well worth an explore.[/QUOTE]

I only recommend that you try it - I don't think it offers anything more than making a pleasing instant LCD image available to the subject. The same effect can be achieved on a 'standard' JPEG in my printer software, which even offers 3 levels of 'face smoothing'. No doubt other PP might do better.

[/QUOTE]Well it sure helps when you have an ascetically pleasing subject to try this portrait technique out on :)[/QUOTE]

I think you've already demonstrated that you have at least one!

[/QUOTE]Regarding your casual stuff - I can't get that bridge shot out of my mind. It's not just me saying they are great shots - but that one is playing on my mind - I keep thinking about it and I can't quite figure why it has me hooked to this extent. Strange.[/QUOTE]

More worrying than flattering - it's only me mate trying to break his duck!

PS And it took Yvonne to really make something of it!

 - it's OK - it's not your mate I'm "hooked on". It's the composition. Like I said strange it's had such an effect. If I could explain it totally trust me I would but rest assured your mate can continue to try and break his duck without having to throw occasional wary glances over his shoulders ;)

Seems you occasionally have a few problems with the quote part of the email.

When you click quote you'll get the quote tags automatically produced. E.g. with your last post I clicked quote and got {QUOTE=Piscator Pete;5119206} your post content {/QUOTE}.

You need to make sure that you have the full {QUOTE=Piscator Pete;5119206} text you want to quote goes in here {/QUOTE} tags for each quote you copy and paste.

e.g.

{QUOTE=Piscator Pete;5119206} first quote from message {/QUOTE}

I agree!

{QUOTE=Piscator Pete;5119206} second quote from message {/QUOTE}

I disagree!

Please note you'll actually be using [] instead of {} but to post this example I had to change those brackets else it would have actually placed a quote with -

Thanks James – Aha it’s in the Guildford area. Looks nice and accessible for me. I’ll plan a trip sometime :)

Thanks Martyn,

Think I've twigged it, but you have to make allowance for the effect of 'anno domini'!

James, how do you get into Petworth Park without having to go through the National Trust entrance (where the park doesn't open until mid day!). I've always wanted to go either early or late in the day but I don't know where the various entrances are. If you could give me some tips I'd be grateful.

"Just a thought...
It's not something I've done before, but I'd be happy to occasionally post an X10 image I'm happy with, talk about the story behind the image (why I was there), what attracted me to take it - and here's the different bit - also show the variation shots I took at the same time as I refined my thoughts, plus show the effects of my post processing.
Any takers? "

That's what I'd like to see from everyone who posts a great shot as it helps people like me who is always looking for the shot that is that little bit better !

And being the kinda cheeky chap I am - perhaps you could suffer me for a few hours if I tagged along :D

Hi Lindsay - carry on up the A283 past the main entrance another mile or so and you'll see a sign post to the car park through a gate in the wall. Opens at 8am till dusk. £2 all day or free to NT members.

This is probably the wrong place to ask this but is the X10 everything you wanted it to be? I have a NIkon P300 compact and a D7000. I recently had a lovely holiday in Edinburgh but only took the P300. Whilst the black and white images are fantastic, the colour ones were lacking. I have 2 kids and want to get nicely balanced and most importantly focussed images without taking my full kit. I have been wondering about buying back into micro 4/3rds but I will want every lens under the sun and then it doesn't become cost effective. So is the X10 a trustworthy addition to a kit? Thanks, Sarah

Hi Sarah, I use the x10 when I don't want to take my D7000 out. I've been so impressed with it that it's noticeable how much less the "big camera" gets used (quote from the wife).

I don't have kids though and a few people on here have mentioned problems with AF speed for kids shots so you might want to check that out.

I've just taken delivery of my X10 I'll have my first play over the weekend, I'm sure it will live up to my expectations.
I purchased the X10 as I used to have a Canon G12, I liked the G12 but I thought it was a little large for a P&S so I sold it and purchased a Canon S100 for it's size but I really missed all the external controls, I was going to purchase another G series Canon then I can upon this thread and the rest is history.
My X10 experience will start this weekend (when I can get outside in daylight).

Like any camera there are things some people don't like:

- no information in the viewfinder (not an issue for me !)
- autofocus is (IMHO) not the best at dealing with dynamic subjects (though others claim to have no problem)

... and, of course, it could always do with being smaller

But most people on here think it's the best compromise around if you want almost-SLR capability in a small, pocketable, relatively cheap package. The IQ is excellent and the ability of the lens-sensor-firmware to cope with unpromising conditions and still turn out a good image is outstanding.

Welcome
But this post needs some piccies :D:D:D

<Monty Python> And now for something completely different </Monty Python>

Amazing what you can do with an X10 after some good banter and a bottle of wine. :D

Oh my!!! Wine being the operative word

I think you've time lapsed... and used some light saber or neon tube light but I'm amazed how you've got it to turn into some type of peacock tail (i.e. the gaps between each bit of light being recorded). Want to share the facts?

LOL
Dead simple :D
It's a 20 second exposure using a LED Lenser V24 for illumination.
I used two sweeps starting at the head working down, and was mashing the on/off button to pulse the light.
If you look, there's a ghost of my legs in the background.
I also tried continuous illumination and it worked quite well as long as the sweep had some variation in speed to produce texture in the 'wings', but my favourite was this pulsed version.

I have in mind for the future, something like this but with rim lighting from a flash.

An LED Lenser V24!?! That's a new one on me - sounds very technical!

Using wine as a method to lure your victim into posing is inspired however getting them to stand still for 20 seconds, under the influence, is quite another matter ;)

Nice play with light - I like the pulse.

 Love it Terry! Just made me crack up. What a cute baby full of so much expression!

PS you a bit of a "glass half empty" fella? Shouldn't your footer read - "When all of your wishes are granted - All of your dreams will be fulfilled"

Well whilst we are on the baby shots - innocence theme comes to mind.

So normally I don't explain my pictures but as Duncan and others have suggested more explanations, here's mine.

These two were taken last Sunday on my way to Camden shoot (now I have some time today I'll try and get the Camden set sorted).

I was thinking about this shot (http://www.nhm.ac.uk/visit-us/whats...s/wpy/photo.do?photo=2822&category=13&group=3) from the wildlife photographer of the year exhibition from the day before.

The different levels of humanity and responsibility in that photo deeply effected me - especially the different levels of vulnerability.

I was watching this girls reaction to the surrounding environment on the bus. She wasn't talking to her mum much. She seemed totally immersed, yet slightly apprehensive, about what was going on around her. I wanted to capture the juxtaposition of two moments that tell everything through the eyes. What I was trying to achieve was the kind of shots that don't need this sort of explanation - just like the link to the photo I posted above.

Apprehension

8191966053_f7deae13bd_c.jpg

Reassurance

The reason for the different focusing - the first was to try and add to the feeling of the apprehension - with only the reflected eye in focus - a sort of ethereal moment for this innocent mind. The second is sharp - a coming back down to earth as her mothers eyes reassure. I didn't feel the mum needed much space in the frame of the second as the subject is the innocent mind and it's relation to discovering the world alone. Mum just needed to be hinted at.

Anyway waffle over. Not sure if that is much use to anyone but you get an idea behind my thinking when I approach these shots.

Souldeep

Lovely shots but not sure if I am being overly cautious regarding the law with taking pictures of children and especially when not in a public place? Perhaps someone knows the exact law/s?

Yes. As long as the images aren't indecent, strictly speaking the laws regarding children are no different from the ones that apply to photographing adults.

Andy, Si and John - thanks for the kind words :)

John - anything goes legally, including nudity, in public space. I never get grief with kids shots but then I'm a right brudey mutha and I've never had parents have a negative reaction to me photographing children where ever I've been in the world. Sometimes just a smile is enough to put a parent at ease if they spot you photographing their children in candid. I've taken piccies of kids screaming and running around in parks, or by the sea, in the nude and it looks in the photos just as it was - an honest expression of young innocence and freedom.

To be honest I think it's crazy the way the UK has become regarding innocence. It's so wrapped up in cotton balls that it's losing the freedom that came with it. I won't panda to such things. I may get flamed for having a strong view on this, and expressing it on line, but I truly believe it's things like that worth fighting against and I should not feel guilty about capturing a moment of innocence - ever :)

The thing is - there have always been wrong'uns out there, throughout history. What is changing society now is the way that the media make you feel connected to an incident that happens 150 miles away from your home. It's always happened but the news never used to report it, and before that people would only know about stuff that happened in there local area. Nothing like a child incident to sell papers - sad but true. Media makes us feel connected to these incidents, like they have happened to someone connected to us and makes us feel like we need to live in fear of letting a child run around naked at the beach. I like to put the stats into perspective - its very unlikely your child will be abducted. Do we choose to wrap them up or encourage there freedom and independence?

Anyway sorry - I digress ;) It's a subject close to my heart! I don't mean to offend anyone on this matter - especially if something has happened to someone you know - I just feel strongly about my personal view on this and I don't want to be scared away from capturing something because it may be sensitive - today with the PC brigade it seems everything offends everyone. To freedom I say :)

Terry, Souldeep - cracking shots. I like those. Two completely different scenarios, but both lovely captures.

Some superb photos coming on the thread now.
Now for a bit of techie stuff.
I have been getting a "?read error" when viewing images. I thought it was the card so changed to another. Its been ok for a week or so but now it is showing
'?read error
' again.
Both cards are Sandisk. Has anybody had similar problems?
Allan

Hey Allan - I've seen it on the odd occasion. The images have been fine when they've been downloaded though. format the card after download and seems ok.

Right Camden street shoot from last Sunday uploaded.

Hopefully a few here to tickle different tastes. One of the main techniques I was trying (and failing rather miserably at) was to pan with a small area of focus. I love impressionism and I've been trying to create a similar impression with photography. I'll keep practising

Loving the panning shots, the X10 is am impressive piece of kit in the right hands.

And these are more the type of candid shots you are used to from me. Landscape orientation...

I give up....

I know how you feel! If I got one of those I'd be overjoyed!

PS, souldeep I also really liked the motivational discussion. I don't think I'm anywhere near a place where I could be so articulate about what I am attempting...

I've only just noticed it, I'll use another card from my X100 and see if it happens with that.

The pan shots, I love the idea and I think you are setting yourself a hard task there with the tiny focus zone. I look forward to your later results.
I really like the guy(?) in the check jacket with the curly hair.
I love the second set, the guys face outside the ballroom is wonderful.

I must take my camera out more.......
