A bit like 'Spot the Ball' then really, without the 'daydream' of a prize!

I still have my cane rod rods from the 50s and 60s, and in anticipation of finding the universally sought, but elusive, 'round tuit', I have canes, formers, and planes from those times stored in my loft ready to build my own split cane (given an injection of ready-made skill!). Hence, like you, I've only ever 'assembled' rods.

The fish weren't cooperative at all yesterday, so much so, that my friend, a very skilful stalker of wild brownies on chalksteams with nymph and dryfly (in season), was reduced to dribbling a float down the current from a bridge like a small boy; the rod very definitely betraying what one famous angling writer knowingly once called the ''despondent droop"!

Pete your 'angler on the bridge' is definitely one of my favourites not only on this X10 thread but on any TP thread :thumbs:

I note you are not entirely sure about the PP but what aspect of that are you not happy with :thinking:

I do like that image.
IMHO 10 stoppers are about making the sky an active part of the composition, and the feeling of the movement they have captured in the sky is precisely why I bought my Lee Big Stopper.

I don't actually use the Big Stopper very much.
It takes a patience I rarely seem to have when the right subject is in front of me. It commits the camera to be tied up making the roving sort of exploration I love almost impossible.

Well thank you Daydreamer and Duncan, but I am a bit mystified because I really felt it was so short of quality, that I almost didn't post it!

You see, to me, the PP treatment I give it (admittedly probably crude), makes it look a bit artificial, especially in the highlights. Following Duncan's and Souldeep's advice, I exposed for the sun, and brought the shadows up in Photoshop Elements 6. Perhaps it would help you to see what I mean if I post the original JPEG straight out of the camera:

You see, I can't preserve the 'look' of that bit of woodland in the top LH corner -in the edited version of the shot, it looks more like an artist's painting to me.

Any hints which won't cost me money with PP programmes?!

A tad more contrast on the top left wouldn't hurt and would bring back the trunks, but other than that it is bob on...
You are never going to get the sun anything other than over exposed, so don't fight it and get the rays looking natural. You did a pretty good job, so accept the praise, it's deserved ;)

Looks horrible on the X10 screen, but you just have to have faith in the outcome!

I may sound a bit like Bruce Forsythe here - on Strictly Dancing which I have no choice but to watch as my wife is hooked. But Duncan you are still my favourite photographer overall :clap:

Pete I've just had a play in PE10 but see the challenge BUT I am not an expert even though I have won a number of challenges on the PP thread. So why not post the shot on there as there are some really good PP people? Have you tried B&W?

PS Why am I still hooked on this thread as I no longer own an X10 :cuckoo: It's because it is so good natured and forgetting the actual camera has bloody good shots :thumbs:
 
Wow Duncan, I'm amazed at how much you've been able to recover those shadows.

When bringing up the exposure are you doing anything special? I've mainly stuck with JPG recently but when I used raw I seem to remember getting some strange artefacts that looked kinda like noise but much more noticeable. I'm going to have to give it another try.
 
John, Ian - ta muchly!
The X10 did a cracking job this weekend; some 'proper' shots coming soon.
Interestingly, two of Saturday's group (6 on Sat and 3 today) were using an iPhone 5 as their camera.
Putting it mildly, I was impressed.
One of the pano shots from the iPhone hands down beat me as the groups favourite image of the day viewed on the back of the 'camera' over a few evening beers.
If it gets' posted online, I'll add a link as I know all of us in this thread appreciate the merits of a quality image taking device in a small package.

Here's one of the iPhone 5 photographers using it as a phone.

Ordinarily, I take a dim view of people using phones in such majestic scenery, but in this case I'm happy to make an exception.
His neighbours house burned down and the chemicals from the fire may have killed everything in his garden. Insurance has to be sorted to tidy it all up.
On top of that, one of his sons is diabetic and autistic and this call was yet another emergency at home.
Poor chap needs all the support he can get without me scowling at him about respect for the mountains :)
I'm sending him this image as his wife really has no comprehension about the situation he was in when he answered the call.

Here's another angle on the same phone call.
He did go and stand in 'the' most fantastic place for a photography subject, so what was I supposed to do other than take his shot? :shrug:
Both of these are straight out the camera, no PP.

Crickey, Duncan, stunning views and that poor chap probably does deserve a bit of leniency [not to mention amazement that he got a signal up there, how DO they do that?]

I dont actually like fishing, yet strangely do like shots of fishermen, so quite pleased with a couple that are appearing here, some great colours.:thumbs:


I spent a hugely enjoyable afternoon/early evening in Camden with Martyn [Souldeep] - a little less energetic than hiking up mountains, but we [well, Martyn swore he did] enjoyed it :lol:

Just one pic I like, there are some more on flickr, but something about the 'layers' in this one appeals to me, from the canal at the front all the way to the gas meter on the wall at the back of the kitchen. I have desaturated it a little in LR as the big yellow bucket was just a bit too dominant, and the tiny push on the clarity slider, more to give it a slightly grittier feel than anything else.

Thanks, Allan, you are all very generous.

No fear of a glut of angling shots - yesterday I wasn't actually fishing, but when I am, I will have no thought for photography other than to take routine pictures, recording anything large I might catch. I won't take my X10 - just a little Lumix 'point and shoot' that I don't mind being knocked about in my tackle bag and really does an amazing job despite its simplicity.

Duncan - many thanks for taking the trouble to post those images for me. I do see what you mean about adding a little contrast in my shot too, but how do you confine its effect to just one area of the image? (If that's too basic to be discussed here, say so, and I'll clue-up elsewhere). Marvellous prelim shots of Snowdonia - poor bloke though - it never rains but it pours for some.

Just sticking a few here from today. I've not used my X10 much recently, what with the thumb grip gradually coming unstuck (and taking a lot of film shots). This week I got it back again from Fuji, so a little wander today with it, partly as it was lovely and sunny, partly to scout some shots for the nationwide folder challenge over on F&C (we only get two shots each!). Anyway, in two quite separate places I found these lovely if deadly looking fungi (not even in macro mode)...

Yep, its about the only fun guy I know by name that Fly Agaric chap :D Nice captures, though would love to see how the macro modes would have dealt with them too to see if it could create some separation or would the dof have been just a tad too shallow as these things are usually relatively big.

Excuse my ignorance, which castle? The light falling on it is beautiful, well caught but shame about all those people and signs, couldn't you have told them to shift, very important photograph being taken? :bat: JOKE! ;)

I don't check into the forum for a few hours and it's absolutely on fire!

There are too many good shots to mention in a post so let me just name drop - YV (props for the deer shot!), Pete (composition on the bridge blows me away), Dave (tree pano nailed!), kernowbhoy (the reflection shot is different league), Duncan (every bl*ody shot), Chris (nailed macro and great colour).

BTW - had a great afternoon with YV yesterday. Very cool relaxed photographer with a great eye and lush tendencies so we got on just great ;) I thought I was the better stalker (caught YV with some candid's before I introduced myself) however I did had the advantage - I knew what she looked like where as I was disguised as a Camden lackey with a concealed X10 :p However clearly YV has far superior stalking tendencies - the wild deer shot is great and far closer than I managed a few weekends back.

Rhodese - thank you :) Actually I included that shot because she looked like she was having a zen moment. Think the shot works. I haven't thought of trying that one in mono (and to be honest with the amount of work I have to do with Korea and Japan sets - about 3000 shots in total - plus Camden shoot yesterday - I'm going to have to let that set rest). I have thought about prints though - just to see what they look like but awaiting Duncan's reply about printing before I move forward.
 
Duncan - Lee Big Stopper. Have you tried it on your X10 yet?

I'm contemplating a variable ND but not hearing anyone's opinion on those so not sure if it's the right investment. I do admit the idea of not carrying around my Cokin filters replaced with one simple round variable is appealing :)

The food stall with the steam is spot on - worth posting here no? The colours are great and you caught the (definitive ;) ) moment with the hand and ketchup! Great reflection in the canal as well.

Typing this with my cat snoozing on my lap - not the ancient cat which has appeared in this thread as he is no longer with us, but a pure black moggy with the softest fur you will ever find on a cat. He is impossible to photograph though....

'Fraid not! She's one of our Maine Coons with long soft fur - and they love water! :bang: First time I've found her waiting in the basin though. :lol:



Back on topic, I've just suggested to Yv that the X10 is like Skoda cars were a few years ago ... small and unpretentious, surprisingly good at doing their job and loved by the clique of owners who have discovered them!
 
Anyone have an X100 at the same time as an X10? Is the AF of the X10 as poor as the X100? Thanks

Along the lines of a post headed "Can anyone help me improve this photograph" then link to the file telling them you have put it on the X10 thread but are frustrated as you feel there be more expert PP folks that could do the shot more justice. Then and see what happens. Give it a day or so and usually there are those that will step in and offer edits for you to look at.

Sorted :thumbs: But please give that a go as I, for one, would be very interested to see what others make of it.

Good idea John - I am just on my way out of the door, but will also have a tweak in Lightroom later. You will never pull the sun down and I think its fine as it is, so a lot of the work would need the grad tool in LR to light the right hand side more. This is one of those occasions where a RAW file would have been even better, but the jpgs from the X10 are quite forgiving considering the senor size so you can certainly do something with it. :thumbs:

It's about the same, but you learn to live with it. X10 has the "best frame capture" feature. Anybody used it on here?

**drums fingers** Still waiting for Yves Geza to be ready, so just had a very quick play

Basically I used the grad tool in LR hat allows you adjust an image with a graduation across it, in any direction you spin it to. [great for landscapes to pull land back, etc] - increased exposure in the RHS, and shadows and a touch of contrast. Its by no means perfect, but has retained the look of the top LHS from the original I think
