Wow - computer controlled mount. Sounds like you are quite the astronomer then. Would still love to see some of your night sky examples taken with the X10 trails or not :-)

Hmm – so a choice of sensor overheating or NR causing gaps. Crazy.

Is it better to shoot shorter bursts, of say, 10 seconds then?

Also – is NR reduction something that only kicks in via the auto modes or is it also on, by default, in the manual mode?

a couple from today i blew the highlights unfortunately .that will teach me for using ap:D a bit of pp in ps would help with both i think (ill get round to straightening it:D)

They should have totally different DoF.

As posted earlier, f2 on the X10 is equivalent to f8 on a full frame DSLR.
Traditional landscapes are shot at the wide end on the lens, and f8 is usually more than enough. The only exception is the style of landscape shot with something really close in the foreground; if you want these sharp right the way to the horizon then it is always going to be a challenge and it isn't really any easier with the DSLR than it is with the X10 - but that's where tilt/shift lenses and large format field cameras come into their own as they re-write the rules about DoF.

In summary - there is very little difference between the X10 and a DSLR providing:
1) compare equivalent focal length (X10 focal length written on the barrel)
2) compare equivalent aperture (f2 X10 = f8 35mm, f4 X10 = f16 35mm)

Thanks everyone who has contributed to this information; it's useful to know and I'm in the process of setting a custom button to help me to remember to get out and test it. One thing that I'm now unsure of is about what ISO to use. Initially, it was suggested to use a fairly high ISO when putting the camera at f8, however, if this has now been amended to f2 would the same still apply? What would a good general ISO be to start at? Realising of course that it would need to be changed depending on conditions.

What is a quick and easy way to batch process photos to ensure they get below the TP file size limit? More often than not I have to have a couple of goes to get them through and I suspect I am missing something obvious about how to do it? I'd post more pics but I lose the will to live before they get uploaded.

Using Elements at the moment.

Uploading them to somewhere like flickr and then embedding them in the post is what most of us do.

The last one was taken in macro "A" mode f/2.5 with ISO 250 and 1/60th shutter. I tend to shoot wide open in A mode with some kind of auto ISO (usually auto ISO800) as I find that gives me a good compromise between noise and camera shake and there is generally enough DOF for most situations.

They are all JPEGs that have been edited in lightroom 4.2. Surprisingly I enjoy editing the JPEGs more than the RAW files. I seem to get much better results using the JPEGs as starting points than the RAW files. You obviously get much better highlight/shadow recovery in the RAW files but other than that I think the JPEGs from the camera are much better.

:lol: Once they are on a file sharing website you need to copy the image URL then put that between IMG tags
and that will embed them in your post =]

In fact, even skimming through this thread and just stopping at the images constantly amazes me what people are doing with this little baby!

It's coming with me on every shoot from here on. Even if I only take a few random snaps with it while shooting with the dslr, it's almost like a little break - a fun section where you just .... shoot! I'd like to have it set to go before I leave the house though. One machine to set up while out is enough.

I'm still fiddling with settings, keep finding more stuff on there. I have C1&2 set up, one for the Velvia[?] look, and one for mono. What kind of settings do you use most with yours? [to everyone that]

Thanks Cagey, I was using mainly EXR during this trip I think. Trying out ways to deal with the dynamic range but also changing the priority to resolution if the lighting wasn't such a problem. I am still looking for the best 'one size fits all' setting but I haven't gotten there yet. I'm veering back to P or A mode just so that I can take a bit more control back and perhaps be a bit more consistent. I find that I do have to use it regularly, or I forget how to get the best from it.
 
I like that shot Edbray. A great example of why you want a good P&S with you when travelling.

Thanks, apart from another digital compact in an underwater housing (f100fd)it's my only Digital Camera.

The panorama thing btw, am I right in thinking that it is something that comes with the latest firmware update? :thinking:



Anyway, off to the safari park today, sort of my last holiday blast before getting back to work properly tomorrow. Will be taking a D300, but also the X10 just for some fun and because I wont have to change lenses for anything close by. ;)

No, it comes as standard as one of the Adv modes along with 'Pro Focus' and 'Pro Low-Light'.

Though thinking about the X10 manual Yv could be excused this time
 
Yv, pro low light is brilliant for still subjects. Takes 4 shots and interlaces them to remove virtually all the noise.

That's probably okay, telling them to RTFM probably isn't though! :lol:
 
An afternoon stroll around the park and county pile. I do love this little beasty to bits. Its great to go for a stroll and not have to lug about all the heavy gear.

The walls of this little place were covered in flint! Very different and would deter most burglars!

This is not about saving the best till last - but something very special from Samuel with those blue candles in the church. That shot floats my boat :clap:

Some real crackers posted this weekend!

I decided I couldn't miss the light so went out hunting for Autumn. It's not in full swing yet - but some nice light and colours never the less. Will post later. Looking forward to seeing others Autumn takes. It's started with the mushrooms (couldn't find any round London parks this weekend) but I get the feeling we are going to see some real stunner's over the next few weeks.

PS thought I'd be lazy and use mostly EXR mode this weekend - especially as people have been bigging it up on this thread. To my disappointment it looks like mode has shot everything in M not L size. Strange as light was great, mostly ISO 100 and it was set to auto size which should shoot L right?

I found in EXR mode it was often shooting M size as well. I think it is mainly to take advantage of higher DR% settings without higher ISO as in M you don't need to have ISO set to the same as DR%.
