Thanks for running that experiment. Thats actually more like the results I imagined - not the image Fuji has provided. Def something to experiment with. Should work well on a greyish day surround by bricks and rain when some lady is walking down the road in a bright red rain coat for example.

PS - love the cat! Although not sure what it's up to with a tissue box next to it's bed and a wide screen at the back of the bed. Hope he's not watching late night prawn! Doh thats bad I know ;-)

This new selective colour filter looks very interesting.

Not sure it is in any way better than you can do in PP. Except for speed I can not see any advantage at all.

Worse, I reckon. The camera won't be able to localise the effect, where with PP you can be as selective as you like. As far as I can tell, it's a gimmick.

Yes - but the real advantage is that you get to see the results at the time of taking.
My cat photo; I took two and that was the second. The first had the wrong emphasis - too much cat and not enough red.
It was only when I saw the image that I realised I needed to make the red more predominate.
I reframed and took another...

And that's why doing selective colour, panoramas and B&W in camera is far more effective than waiting till we get home.

Hey welcome aboard, narbs. We've ALL got a lot to learn with our X10s, we've just seen Grandaddy Duncan learning new tricks a few posts up! I really enjoy the way this group learns together.

I particularly liked your last one; is it a bridge? Something familar about it... and the graffiti shot (pano or crop?) has an eery menace that's quite unsettling!

Better watch out though; I WAS just interested in the X10, but I explored a few other areas here and now I've bought a couple of cheap film cameras, entered some challenges, now there's this one where you use a disposable (all next week), before I know what I'm doing I'll be spending real money...:bang:

You better be careful.
One of my photobuddies did this - then it was a TLR, then it was a big Bronny with tilt shift lens - the it was a smallish field camera - then it was a full on large format field camera.
I have to admit; the last one is a thing of engineering beauty.
eBay film camera bargains are sooooooo tempting.

To be fair, she processes her own film including colour, then scans to the computer.
So it not quite as bad as it sounds.

What you are saying makes some sense...
however It would be worth doing, in the same way a Polaroid was worth doing.
(Then based on the result, do the job properly as well.
But then I am not that bothered about a quick final result.)

(Not that I will be doing the download as I do not care for any of the filters, and want to keep the raw button.)

I got mixed results with the selective colouring but that's probably more down to my technique and me trying to get used to the camera I'm heading into Liverpool later for a proper play with it so hopefully I'll have some first shots to share later on

Hmmm, I can see point. I guess I'm more the slow/old fashioned type and probably will be sticking to my "old" sensor & 1.02...

I've just started to dabble a bit more seriously with the PP, something I still have miles to go in. Once I'm a wee bit more PP-able, I might take the next step ;-)

You are right!

There is one slight difference.
The Fn button brings up the RAW menu, which is not a temporary setting.
That's either good or bad depending on your needs, but at least RAW is now easy to turn on and off.

My Fn button has been changed to RAW and I like it, it's a keeper

Edited to add: Why the heck didn't they make the Quick Menu one of the selectable options for the Fn button?
IMHO It would have kept everybody happy as the original behaviour would have been available and the RAW button functionality (including reassignment) would still be usefully unchanged.
What we have now is the RAW on the Fn button and the quick access stuff on the RAW button; almost a direct exchange - very odd.
I reckon Fuji missed a trick.

I prefer the green!
I think there must be something about the composition that makes green selective colour work well; the car certainly stands out, which is kinda the point of selective colour.

No PP at all, and a couple of very quick shots as the battery was just about exhausted.
I generally try not to do any PP but if I do, its just cropping and a fast saturation / contrast adjustment.
I like the Vivid mode but it can overdo things, and sometimes the Standard mode looks a little flat, so I aim to get something in between them.

LOL - looks like you just discovered how amazingly resistant the X10 is to lens flare

It should have 1.3 firmware. You can check by holding down the Disp/back button while turning it on.
Of course, firmware v2 is out this week........

V1.03 ( I wrote 1.3 but meant 1.03) should be installed when the sensor is changed and this is the version you should see when it is returned, V2 has just come out and just seems to add new features and is more an optional install, so yours is as up to date as it should be.

Sounds familiar, I think its trying to take a set of shots and combine them to get a sharp image. I havent got the manual with me now, what mode are you using?
A reset works wonders......

Press the drive button on the back of camera. Sounds like its set to bracket. Reset it to still image.

Had the x10 at the park with eldest for first time. Sunny morning and it (i) struggled more than i thought without my d90.
Couldnt see screen and viewfinder is useless (no crosshair even??) . Its a focus lottery.
Shutter lag was shocking, first time i tried the camera with much movement with her on the swings...forget it for these scenarios imvho. A second or so lag is a lot i have realised...(probably being unfair to camera but realised how important some simple things actually are)
Ok, these issues are fairly well par of the course for compacts, but maybe i've just taken bad using only dslr the last few years.
Was going to download firmware to try out the selective colour but it doesnt look worth it looking at the above. Might still do it for the menu.
Good for certain things though, probably best for street photography in general. Its quite sharp though, nice colours etc. Useful camera in good softlight i have found, but struggled in autumn sun this morning. Macro is ok though.
D90 will be at the park tomorrow.

That post does sound unfair to the x10 as its a compact of course.
Probably just trying to say i have started to find out where it can be of use, and where not i suppose...no bad thing though.

Had my first go today (at my nieces first Birthday party), was so nice not having to worry about the kids getting hold of my D300 plus they seemed not to notice I was taking photo's with the X10 and caught some candids. They didn't mind a little pose too (the photo named "The M". Really impressed with what is just a nice little compact.

Again I'm really impressed with the camera, Jpegs are amazing SOOC and it felt great getting decent shots with a compact.

Would be interesting to see the full EXIF data as it seems rather underexposed. Perhaps the exp. comp. dial was set to minus something?

I've taken plenty of macro shots and not a single one has ever been underexposed...

Just thinking: when taking macros outside, wind might be a factor, especially in macro shots (as the exposed/metered area is so small).

Well - I hit a new X10 problem today....
One that well and truly stuffed me - dead X10.

When I half pressed the shutter, I got loads on bleeps and a a weird message about a full file system.
Having never actually filled a card while shooting (I have a 16Gb and a 32Gb) I assumed it was the card full message.
No spare card, but luckily the SD in the 5DIII wasn't being used, so I whipped that out and formatted it for the Fuji.
And I still got the file system full message - it's lying!
After 10 mins of frustration I stomped home.

During the stomp I worked out what the problem was.
I can now tell you exactly how many images I've taken on my X10, because today I hit the upper limit of 9999.

If you ever get this problem, go to page 2 of the tools menu.
It is called Frame No, flip it to Renew, format the card and the problem is sorted.
When the X10 appears to be working again, flip Frame No back to Continuous.

I've hit this on my 5DII - it simply wraps around and starts at zero - no worries.
The Fuji just curled up in a corner and died on me!!!!!!!
I missed some cracking light because of this problem.
Time for a grumpy 5 mins until I get a proper look at what I managed to take today.
Initial impression is that I may have got something special.

Well in continuation of my epic struggle between JPEG and RAW I come bearing a question.

I shot a photograph in RAW+JPEG today and decided to do a little fiddling with highlight recovery. (I can't post the full pictures, my gf would kill me so these are crops of the area in question)

This is the JPEG with highlights taken down a little in LR:

This is the RAW with highlights taken all the way down in LR:

My question, if I had set the highlight tone to -2 (it was -1) would I have gotten similar results? I know it was RAW vs JPEG but if I can do it to the RAW in lightroom, can't the camera do it too?

I'm still unsure about settings like colour, sharpness, noise reduction etc. If anyone can explain what they use and why that would be great. I think I like velvia most out of the film settings.

Apart from the highlight recovery I actually preferred the picture as a JPEG than my own attempts at editing the RAW. I only want to shoot one rather than both because it makes it a lot easier to handle and seeing as hobbies are supposed to be fun and not bog you down I think just dealing with one format is for me. If I can get acceptable highlights then I will be all set on JPEG

User error :bonk: I had compensated for an earlier shot and forgot to reset it. I was in aperture priority, what setting do you guys recommend for close up stuff?
It's all new to me, cheers

thats strange it shows you in auto in your exif data,(edit) its shows in ae as you said but also Exposure Mode set as auto further down in the exif
