The Official Fuji X10/X20/X30/XF1/XQ1 Thread

Okay, so I took the little X10 to the pub today to take some shots of the lads watching the game and came across an issue I don't really understand. Shooting in aperture priority it completely unexposed everything. This happened even if I added compensation of any amount. Shooting in scene mode or EXR exposed perfectly. Anyone else had this issue? Is it a fault that is rectifiable before I contact Fuji?

I would go as far as to say that vodeo is not its strong point. Like most such cameras it can't manual focus in video.

Not only can it not manual focus, but video quality is awful. My phone is better.

The rest of the internet seems to disagree?

But if so i'll have to re-think my choice then...

Maybe it's a settings issue then - I'll check mine and try again.

Well, I've been giving my new X10 a good try-out over the past 3 days. Sticking to P, Auto or Adv and not trying to change too much from the defaults. Once I'd got used to the (IMO needlessly complex) way that the mode determines what options are/aren't available, I'm getting the hang of the controls.

Overall I'm very happy with it, exposure etc is generally spot on. The one bugbear I have though is focus. I've not tried manual focus, but so far have found that both the 2 auto focus modes seem slow and/or easily confused, as compared with my (3 yr old, relatively cheap) SLR. How has everyone else found this?

What crop factor is this camera

Sounds like the ISo maybe wasn't high enough?

What difference would that make to the cameras ability to expose properly? I chose an aperture almost wide open and it chose a shutter speed well within its capabilities.

Sounds like you had exposure lock on. AFL/EFL button.

It is surprising how beer fumes effect exposure control.

I don't drink. ;) I'll check that I didnt hit it by accident though.

Okay, it seems 1/30th is the lowest the shutter speed will go in aperture priority mode. It's still underexposed everything else above this.

Sorted. It was because external flash was activited. :)

Brian it's never going to match a DSLR in any aspect except fun factor. I've found af to be perfectly adequate.

Your old slr still used phase detect focusing, much quicker and more accurate than contrast detect focus, which is more common on compact cameras.

Nikon 1 series has phase detect and it's autofocus is very much lauded.

I found that if you had set the ISO to a low value as a maximum then its results are varied.

That sounds like a fault to me.

Yup - the experience is quite different to a DSLR.
With my DSLRs I use Aperture priority for 99.9% of my shots, but this didn't work for me on the X10 because of hitting max shutter speed.
I also tried fixing to ISO 100 and lost shots because of camera shake, small cameras are harder to hold still.
Which is why I now leave the X10 in Program mode and Auto ISO unless I have a specific reason not to.
I get way more keepers doing this!

I posted a set of Noah I'm people and portraits doing that very thing.

Is this one of the better, not-so-expensive RAW/manual control compacts out there?

I've watched a lot of reviews on it and they all had some niggly little issue with it. Can an X-10 user verify that it is good at high ISO? , And comment on the HD video, is it pretty decent, how fast is it in operation? - no noticeable lag between shots?, and general image quality?

One review suggested that the menu system was confusing and brought you around in circles until you really got used to it.

Not thinking of this for me, but for my girlfriend. We're heading to NYC in early Dec and she'd like a camera to learn manual controls on. But of course it has to fit in a handbag :D

When the X10 came out the only rivals were the G12 and LX5. Since then a flood of high IQ pocketable cameras have come onto the market.
The price of some of them is properly eye watering, and that's where the X10 currently wins hands down.
You can pick up an X10 for under £300 and there's not much that can touch the X10 at this price.

The reviews that sum up my experience with the X10 are these ones:
1) The image quality nerds over at Luminous Landscape
http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/fuji_x10_first_impressions.shtml
2) Adventure photographer Dan Bailey
http://danbaileyphoto.com/blog/fujifilm-x10-camera-full-review/

Ignore the Dpreview review, they fumbled the ball with the X10.

MarcQc - stunning colours!
I've not seen valves in action for quite a few years - what are they in?

Here's a piccy from last weekend's wedding.
I was toting a 5DII and 5DIII with 50mm f1.4 and 135mm f2.0. The X10 was keeping good company and was the only zoom lens I carried :|
The light was bad enough that apart from the late afternoon service the X10 really struggled; but to be fair, so did the 5DII. The 5DIII is in a different league and I can report it is awesome in ultra low light.
Anyway - here's a Fujiama taken from the side of the ceremony at arms length above the guests heads. It's had some favourable comments from the families, but what do you lot think!

Great shot
it did a excellent shot in the conditions.

Thanks for sharing the pic Duncan. The X10 is great for panoramic shots. Worth keeping for that alone IMHO. Noted your comment on the 5D3's low light capability too ;)

I have a burning question and have searched everywhere for an answer to no avail. How does one expand the ISO beyond 3200?

With thanks in anticipation :)

LOL - I have only ever once managed it on location when I really needed it!
It's like one of those fiendish mind puzzles.
The obvious first step is it needs to be set to take JPEG, not RAW.
After that, it gets tricky!

Aye - Gotcha

Thanks Duncan. Actually I might as well keep it on the Jpeg setting since there is no Apple support for X10 RAW files yet!!! :(

Keep Enjoying :)

Thanks everyone
Looks like photographers agree with the families; in my experience that's not always the case!

Even the big DSLRs failed to get details back out those blown highlights.
What was interesting is that when I tried, the picture did not work so well.
The blown highlights are bright, but far less distracting than the clutter which would otherwise be displayed, so the viewer looks only at the wedding.
As a landscape photographer, that statement goes against just about everything I've been told over many years where blown highlights is right up at the top of a long list of mortal sins.

You can do the trick of feeding the raws through DNG Converter, and then feeding those into Aperture. It accepts them... but (with zero raw processing skills) I've not been able to get a decent image out of them, compared with the JPEGs!

Life is a compromise especially on such occasions. Which mode did you use Duncan? There are times when I use EXR as a ( or nearly ) get out of jail card.

Errm - sorry to disappoint; but I used Panorama mode (under Adv) with no exposure compensation and left the X10 to get on with it!
The automagic modes on the X10 work amazingly well.

Went for a run round the low lying land bordering the local river this morning. I'm almost getting used to the X10's aspect ratio now, although I still tend to crop to 3:2 quite frequently. However it was ideal in panorama mode to show the extent of the flooding - even if I wasn't taking sufficient care to make the best of it. My excuse is that I should have been working and was in a rush!

Some below, more here for those that can be bothered.

I just love this thing. This is at ISO 2500 with the Pro Low Light setting enabled that seems to take 4 shots and combine. I'm amazed at the low noise so it must shoot different pixels next to each other and remove the noisy ones. Brilliant.

I hear firmware v2.0 is on its way. Quick menu and art filters amongst the new items.
