The Official Fuji X10/X20/X30/XF1/XQ1 Thread

Can't blame you at that price. Mine arrived from the same place a couple of days ago and it is absolutely pristine. I'm currently enjoying playing with it and annoying Mrs Y by snapping her at every opportunity. (I've never grown up and I am determined never to do so ;))

It's in my hands. Didn't pay for next day delivery. But it came anyway. Wife thinks its a toy. Still playing with it !

D'oh - found out about the Fuji refurbs and discount code the day after I won an X10 on ebay - a month old with spare battery for £320 - I suppose that's still a good price

Hope it comes today so I have the weekend, but feeling it's gonna be a Monday delivery :(

Cheers all!

Take comfort from the fact that many of the earlier posters on this thread could have paid up to £500 and I guess they could feel it

Enjoy it when it arrives and get some pictures uploaded on here

Indeed :gag:
But since I got my X10 in early Nov I've taken many shots I'm really pleased with.

And if you think that's bad....
I bought a 5DIII; RRP £2995.
If you look at the 5DIII thread you may observe some people have found a way of buying them for a midge under £2000 :bang:
Makes the X10 depreciation look insignificant.

Just to get this back on page one...:)

Just sent fuji an e-mail asking to register my camera for the sensor replacement.
I've also asked them to take a look at the zoom ring. There is some play in it (basically I can turn the zoom ring almost to the 35mm mark without it actually zooming in at all.

Just been taking a few flower pictures in the studio with my DSLR and thought I'd go for a few with the X10, but have to say it isn't ever going to replace the DSLR in this arena.

And why should it?

But not bad for a compact. At F9 you will have some softening due to diffraction. It is just one of many compromises in the world of small sensors. I have seen crisper on here.

I have not seen any one try focus blending using a focus slide, with an X10. It should be possible in all manual.

I don't really think anyone would expect it to, but I guess if you take into account the cost of your dslr with lens against the cost of an x10, then look at the images, I think the X10 does pretty well.

Well there have been several mentions on this thread of people getting rid of their DSLR's as they've been so impressed with the X10 and I have to say it is my first choice for a walk about option - unless I fancy some fish-eye fun.

The X10 is the most expensive camera I've ever bought! One of the main lenses I use indoors is a first generation EF 35-70 which was an eBay £17 win, with the main bulk of my photographic expenditure going on studio flash equipment - in fact whenever I've used a pro studio (for space reasons) I've often been quite appalled at how poorly equipped some have been. :(

In that case I withdraw most of my argument! You really can't go wrong with that sort of lens at those prices!
I bought an X100 to replace my dslr, the X10 came along because I fancied a zoom lens. Compactness and portability were my main concerns in switching from a dslr and these two cameras fit the bill completely.
Image quality was only part of the decision.

But, I am more than happy with my X10....(I only wish Flickr wouldn't "improve" the images uploaded to them)!

I like the perspective of the key there.

I'm not sure I'll being using the 'firework' setting too ofen. In fairness, I think it was still warming up for the first one! This is without the sensor change.

Generally, seemed to set ISO 100 f10 to f11 and 2.5 secs. I might try manual settings next time to see if it makes a difference. Put up a few to show how the different types came out.

This afternoon in a very windy Edinburgh! It was so colourful I just had to share. Not just Jazz, really; several local pipe and drum bands as well...

Performers waiting for the Carnival, stunned by the Castle I think (better if I could have got it in).

Not one of these is smiling, I think they must have been told to keep it dark for the image. Is that a surpressed grin in the front?

Quite a setting for Jazz!

Colourful, yes!

It was a lot of fun, but not as much Jazz as I remember in the Grassmarket last time I was here in the Jazz Festival. The main stage was a disaster;too far away and too much noise going on in venues nearby (the drumming was prety much continuous).

Puzzled. Here's the scenario:

I shoot in RAW on my X10, say just one image. I delete said image and the number of available shots now shows one less than it did prior to taking the shot. Nothing I do seems to restore the card's previous capacity, even formatting, formatting on computer or deep formatting in another camera.

At this rate I will have nil capacity on every card I own. Any suggestions?

Oh and I use SanDisc cards.

If this was a Canon it would be easy to answer as the RAW files use lossless compression and size varies dramatically depending on content.
The X10 RAW files vary a little, between 19.3 and 19.4 Mb; so nothing like the Canon!
But that variability is obviously going to affect the number of images to some extent and the estimate of how many you have left is no doubt some fiendish weird algorithm that seems bizarre to us mortals.

However....
When you use a card reader, the computer should tell you the total capacity in KBytes.
As long as that doesn't change then everything should be fine.

Just a quick note to say that I sent my X10 off to Fuji for the 'software upgrade' and it was returned to me in immaculate condition within 48 hours. Initial tests this morning show that noise appears to is reduced at all sizes and all settings and it also seems a little sharper. I'm impressed with how it's performing. I would be interested to hear opinions from others who've had the software tweaked.

I got an X100 a week ago. IQ is amazing, but I keep going back to the X10 for its versatility and cuteness.

Loving the images in this thread!

I'm so jealous of that lizard, I haven't seen one in years and I've never seen one as huge as Paul's!

Duncan - loved your makeup a couple of pages back. You said it hid signs of age and fatigue? Right ... I'm off to grab my makeup bag and practise.

All the more lucky to see two (perhaps a male & female  not my specialist subject). Pictures taken in the grounds of Coleton Fishacre (near Kingswear) the former residence of the D'Oyly Carte family - wonderful gardens in the summer.

LOL - I've suggested all the festival organisers get their faces painted next year. Especially if the rest of the committee get to choose a design reflecting their personality. Oooo that could be so much fun! :D

Great to hear your recent positive experiences with Fuji.
I'm sat next to the return box wondering if now is the time....

Since u guys posted some fireworks, let me upload my own. Taken with the inbuilt fireworks preset, i quite like the way they turned out, considering they were handheld for 2 seconds:

Some nice orbs in there :). No senzor change for me, just the latest 1.03 firmware.

The last ones were taken in the church, no flash. As I found out this weekend, it really screams to let it on EXR or preset modes, since manual mode is quite reluctant to take good pictures in strong light. A large percent of my daylight pictures turned out very overexposed, even when exposure compensation was dialed to -1 or even -2.

Thinking about one of these as a walkabout camera....anyone have any idea as to RAW file compatability with apple aperture ?

Apple does not (yet?) have RAW support for the X10. Expletive deleted!

Of course, if you use Lightroom it's not a problem. Sigh.

I have had some luck using Adobe's DNG converter; Aperture seems quite able to cope with the resulting DNGs, which surprises me. I'm guessing the process is not particularly EXR-friendly however... and the workflow stinks!

cheers ChrisR. Can I ask (and aware there is probably an existing thread) but is Lightroom OK for actual editing? Or should I get Photoshop Elements? I probably don't need to do too much processing, but would like room to grow, so to speak

Thanks in advance

LOL - proverbial can of worms......
But I think it is appropriate for a brief distraction as it is relevant :)

Lightroom is not an image editing program.
It looks after the whole image workflow from camera via basic post processing to printing, keywording, publishing and storage.
This is where its real power comes from.
All my keepers are directly accessible from within Lightroom (102K+) with galleries selected from them for publication on my website and other purposes.
When I change the gallery selection in Lightroom, my website updates; which is really cool!

It doesn't do advanced editing, for example it cannot be used to get rid of a telegraph pole. But the editing gets more powerful with each release and I'm loving what is available in LR4.
More than 99% of my images only get post-processed in Lightroom.
A tiny number get passed over to Photoshop CS5 for advanced editing including cloning and merging together multiple images.

In short - long term you will probably use both Lightroom AND an editing program.
You need to decide what you want from your photography as to which you buy first.
Option 1 - Lightroom - start as you mean to go on and use GIMP (free) for what little advanced editing you need.
Option 2 - Elements - Good editing, but rest of image workflow is down to you.

Friday 13th :D:D:D
Given the problems people have been having that was taking a heck of a big risk :bonk:

Thanks for some more positive feedback.
I'm getting closer to sending mine in

Duncan said it well, I think. I have Aperture, not LightRoom, so can't comment. I'm kind of regretting it now, especially with the lack of X10 Raw support, and I can't use the latest version of Aperture as I'm on Snow Leopard on the Mac (ie not the latest version). But changing over would be a BIG change; I don't think there are any easy pathways. I've wondered about getting LR and using it for new stuff and Aperture for the existing, but I suspect I'd go (even more) bonkers!

The good thing about both Aperture and LightRoom is the non-destructive editing; I think you can do this in PS or Elements but have to be very careful with your layers... but that's just from reading as I've not used either.
