Did anyone notice Chris Packham using an X10 on Countryfile just now? ;)

Here's a few fun ones from me from this afternoon...

All three were lit using a Canon 580EXII on manual (mainly at 1/128 power) fired through a 'Rogue' variable grid and triggered with a Yong Nuo RF-602 :)

Just looking at some of these on Flickr, pretty dam awesome if you ask me, great work. (as usual)

yes i noticed him using X10 on JC's pond just before they scared the barn owls out :-)

Awesome images from Si - as always!

I missed seeing Chris Packham with his X10. In fact I've not seen another X10. Mine does get some curious looks when I'm out and about, people have no idea what it is and might presume it's a film camera of some sort.

Yep, one of the policemen who was patrolling the olympic torch route by my house said "That looks like an old camera!" and was quite surprised to hear it was digital

Oops, ordered one again! The refurbs have gone down in price and the code still works so got a camera, memory card and nex day delivery for £312. Not too bad! Mind you have put myself in the wife's good books by flogging a 5N and a sigma 30mm f1.4...

Crikey, some killer shots here. I've been looking for an excuse to replace the Oly XZ-1 with another compact and I think this is a better option than say one of the small micro 4/3rds for the situations when the X100 is found lacking.

Does anyone know if the refurbs are with the new sensor?

It must be in transit somewhere SD.

A friend of mine ordered his last week and it arrived yesterday. I'd email them and ask for a replacement to be sent.

Hi and thanks to those that PM'd me. Would you believe it - it turned up this afternoon  30 days later but in one piece. Sorry for the drama but I had run out of time and needed to go with another option with only one week left before holiday.

They don't have the new sensor in and judging by the amount recently that have been returned as faulty, they don't have any refurbishment either!
My guess is they will replace the sensors on customers cameras and new stock first and still sell the "refurbs as they are till the new sensor X10's become "refurbs" themselves.

I orderd one today, a referb at £307 with card, so I will enjoy the wait, as I did not use next day.....
Orderd a look alike Spare battery on Ebay.

Not sure which lens hood to get ????

Very true, but I'm terrible for getting my fingers all over the lens, so a lens hood helps to prevent me from leaving grubby prints everywhere.

It's useful for using filters but for goodness sake don't try one of those screw on diopter magnifier things!! Worked a treat, until I took it off and the X10 wouldn't focus on anything - I had to do a factory reset before it would work properly again. I have no idea why.

Have lightroom 4.1 sorted out the Raw profile setting for the X10 yet ?

Or are we still on hold.?

Mine generally has a 49mm UV filter on it for precisely that reason... I got one of the 40-49mm HeavyStar rings which is permanently on the front of my camera along with an old generic 'leather-look' 49mm lens cap that was sitting in the bottom of my film bag. :)

I fell out of my comfort zone today with a thud and did a load of macro stuff with the X10 today... I was really impressed with the results (even though my composition probably sucks a bit).

I also put my full Lee 10-stop rig on earlier... I had to laugh at how ridiculous it looked. 40-49mm stepping ring... 49-58mm stepping ring... 58-77mm stepping ring... Lee wide angle holder and then the 10-stop! Talk about overkill! :D

Hey Terry - I agree with Duncan. Don't bother with the lens hood as lens flare just dosn't come up as an issue on the X10. I can however recommend a low profile double threaded UV filter (Lindsay - would help protect your lens with your fingerprint problem) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/150718843442?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 and as Si mentions worth grabbing the heavystar adapter which fits like a dream (I have the 52mm) but do expect delivery to take up to a month!

Si - the third of the three images is awe inspiring! Looking forward to seeing what you have got up to with your macro experiments :)

Love this Duncan!!

Thanks - but I really feel like I've got to dig deep and produce something special to keep up with Si.
For me, his latest portraiture images are just WOW!

Edited to add....
Last night I did actually process a landscape image that I'm genuinely proud of.
It was taken before I got the X10.
If the same situation happened now, I'd probably have the X10 with me.
We were at a restaurant for evening meal which was hastily abandoned when we realised how good the light was getting. We were in such a hurry to get out that they let us pay the bill in the morning!

Here's the image - taken with a 5DII (4 shot panorama).
The X10 has a lot to live up to!

Does this fit the X10 or does it need an adapter?
Will the normal lens cap still fit?

Its a 52mm so it needs an adapter. The normal lens cap does not fit over the 52mm however think of the UV filter as the new lens cap. No need to take the lens cap on or off anymore. It protects your lens and are cheap to replace :)

Yes, they're cheap... But I'd rather have a "proper" filter: quality glass and multi-coated (less flaring, not introducing CA, etc.). I've opted for a Hoya HD UV filter and still use a click-on lens cap. Just as easy and quick, cheap to replace (generic click-on lens caps go for £5 a dozen, or so) and it keeps both dust and finger prints away:

The one I've recommended is glass and multicoated and the pictures I've tested with look good. Remember sometimes you pay a premium for a name. Take the Fuji batteries for example. £40 for just the name!? You can get 1300mp (good extra 40% of battery juice) for less than a fiver!

What it says about the UV lens I've brought;

Pro1D Super Slim Multi-Coated MC UV FILTER
- 52MM

13 Layers, Glass made in Japan

Detail Information

Digital Cameras Need Multicoated Filters. This MC UV filters absorbs the ultraviolet rays which often makes outdoor photographs hazy and indistinct

It is a standard accessory for most camera outfits. Great for use with: Canon, Sony, Minolta, Nikon, Pentax, Olympus and other brands Camera lenses!

It is a slim filter and provide 13 layers of coating.

Features:

1. Pro1 Digital Multi-Coated - Digital multi-coated filters greatly reduce the appearance of lens flare and ghosting caused by reflections.
2. Black Almite Frame- Black matte aluminium satin finish almite frame reduce reflection.
3. Knurling Edge Frame - These filters are equipped with a straight knurling edge for non-slip, easy attachment and removal.
4. Ultra Thin - Ultra thin low profile frames to help avoid vignette on super wide angle lens.
5. Japan Glass: High quality Japan glass with best performance.
6. Filter frames: 3mm

Not so bad right?

With one or two exceptions (like motorsport), the only reason for fitting a UV filter is peace of mind.

All filters reduce image quality.
Better filters only reduce the size of the problem.

Interesting article. Back in the days (when shooting film), I tried different brands and certainly noticed a big difference in picture quality. Perhaps modern lenses are up to scratch and additional filters aren't needed much, but my daughter (turning 3 in about 4 months) sometimes has a different idea of what she can and can't touch/grab. I do believe there is a noticeable quality difference between the filter manufacturers so opting for a quality brand to me is the logical thing to do. As soon as my daughter reaches the age where she understands no is no, my Hoya comes off.

I never use filters unless they are going to either improve the shot or enhance it.
I don't see the point of spending all that money to get a nicely coated lens with a nice curved surface to let in the maximum amount of light, only to put a ( usually) cheap sheet of glass in front of it all

Interestingly, one you start reading up on the filter thing, there are a LOT of factors.
Generally speaking long focal lengths seem more prone to problems with filters and there's a theory it's related to the curvature of the front element.
As usual - the advice is do your own tests and draw your own conclusions; if it looks good then by all means carry on using them :)

Luminous Landscape is an odd-ball website which can be broadly summed up as medium format tech-heads.
They do tend to be authoritative and their articles are well worth browsing.
However, they often fly against perceived wisdom.
For example, they have refused to test the 5DIII as they don't consider it a big enough change to the 5DII to make it worth while - what! :gag:
But on the other hand, their X10 review is one of the top 5 must read reviews as it neatly sums up why we all like this little camera so much.

I have a UV filter on the front of mine but it only stays put if I'm wandering around with the camera over my shoulder... The moment I start doing anything 'serious', it comes off!

I said I'd upload a couple of macro shots taken the other day so here goes... The thing that struck me most of all was the bokeh! I'd be happy enough with that sort of effect from my 5DMKII and 100mm! :D

Si they are lovely. You've really nailed the mode! Yes the shallow depth of field attained in super macro certainly competes with the big guns.

Duncan – thanks for the link. I’ve read and digested it accordingly and will be mindful of this in my shots. I did notice that most of the examples of problems were actually at night and I would personally find it strange to use a UV filter in the dark. I guess that’s inviting problems. One of the main reasons I brought a UV is I am often photographing in hazy light. I’m hoping the filter will help cut “some” of this out.

I tried my ND filter on my recent daytime Gower trip.
Horrendous artefacts any time the sun was in front of the camera (not even remotely in shot). Stopped using it as soon as I spotted them.
It's a cheap filter - nuff said....

Flare is only one of the symptoms you get from filters.
Others are CA in the corners, softness (worse in the corners) and loss of contrast).

Easy way to tell how bad blur and loss of contrast is.
Set up on a tripod saving as JPEG.
Take two shots, one with the UV filter and one without.
The file size of the UV filter image will almost certainly be smaller.
Reason is the loss of fine detail and contrast means the file can be compressed more efficiently.
Not tried this on the X10, but a demo I did using a medium spec UV filter on the 5DII the file size was about 30% smaller.

Si those macros are lovely! Wish I could get the knack of doing them, but I think my hands are too shaky.

Same here and coupled with the wind (no matter how light) means everything shakes. So earlier I resorted to holding the flower with one hand and using the other to take the pic

The X10 is proving to be nice and handy, our new arrival came last week and it was nice to have the X10 with me to capture a few moments.

He was over a week late but thats worked out well with the weather and now I do not have to back to work until after the Bank Holiday

I dont think I would have took the D90 with me to the hospital with all the other things I was carrying but the X10 was easy to drop in.

This one was PPed in LR3, shame about my miss crop in camera but it was a quick grap a shot moment.

 you're certainly not the first to do that

Got mine today. Loving the ergonomics and design. Can't wait to see how the piccies turn out!

Blimey - just down the road from me.
Looks like you are getting your own back for me visiting your neck of the woods so often :D
Have a good time ?

Great pano - I love the Way Out juxtaposition

cheers, yer had awesome day, great place to visit & not been for about 8 years. was 180 miles each way from here right through Wales, was bit of a killer journey in 1 day lol
