Great DOF. Looking at the photo closely the tell-tale blurring from the advance mode is not showing. Looks like you used aperture setting rather than profocus to create the DOF. Can I ask what settings you used?
 
aperture priority and F3.2 I think :)

Hi, I've had my X10 since the end of February and I'm still loving it. I hesitated for a long time before buying, put off by all the orb hate at DPreview. I didn't know about TP at this point. The clincher was the shots that Lindsay showed on her blog. At about the same time I realised that DPR Fuji forum was full of really weird folk, and it was damaging to my sanity to keep looking there! So I bought one from Amazon, because of the returns policy. Not needed, because I can only make it produce orbs under extreme prejudice, and pretty much everything else is just how I want it...

Now I've found TP and this thread where there are people who make sense when discussing the camera, and also manage to make it take great pictures. I'd taken the X10 up Snowdon and got it pretty wet, so it was encouraging to read about Duncan's frequent soaking of his X10, without apparent ill effect! It's taken a week to read right through the thread, and gather lots of useful information, although whether I could ever find any particular posts again, I'm not sure!

You'll maybe see this is my 2nd post on TP, so I'm not yet up to posting any images, but I just thought I'd say "hi".:wave:

As it happens... My X10 is once again battery out, lens extended drying out in a warm place.

Health and Safety Notice - the X10 isn't water resistant and I minimise its exposure to the elements.
When you extend the lens and the barrel comes out wet, you just know it's not going to end well.
My top tip is to get a padded case, this absorbs the water from the camera and does not allow it to pool around the camera. So the camera gets very damp, but not wet.
Take the camera out the case as soon as you get back to the car. When you get home, take out the battery, open all the doors, extend the lens and then leave in a warm dry place for a few days.
I've been doing this since my mountaineering days with an EOS 5 film camera in a CCS pouch and (touch wood) never had troubles with my electronics.

Sunday's weather was monumentally bad - I went up onto the Pen-y-Fan ridge in heavy sleet for nearly four hours. Desperately uncomfortable. Carried the X10 in a case inside a plastic bag in the rucksack and only took it out about half a dozen shots, but that was enough to saturate the case and get the X10 fairly wet.

Regards the two images in that link - if you think the X10 didn't get wet on the Saturday. Then you are mistaken!

Lyndsay is also responsible for me deciding to buy mine, and I agree about DP forums, there are some really awful people on there lately. There was a time when I preferred to look at those forums, but it has changed a lot.
I don't generally bother now, my ignore list is huge!

Almost any from http://lindsaydobsonphotography.com/blog/?m=201203 for example. I think Lindsay has pointed to a few of her posts in some of these pages. It was the incredible versatility that really got to me. These looked like pictures I would want to take, as well as look at, if only I had the photographic skill to do so (rather than just the camera!).

I've not seen that review and many of those images really float my boat :thumbs:

Unfortunately - it looks like he returned his X10 and got a refund just before the sensor replacement rumours started.
Talk about unlucky timing!

I've got a feeling that if this replacement sensor lives up to expectations, then the X10 price is going to rapidly head upwards as sales take off.
It's the one thing that people don't like about the X10, and once it is sorted people will start waking up to just how capable this little camera is.

IMHO Those of you buying an X10 despite the orb problem, taking advantage of the massive price reductions, could be getting camera bargain of the year :)
 
This is terrible. I only came into this thread by accident, now I'm seriously considering getting one of these as a Fuji refurb. Seems cheaper and more versatile than getting any more lenses for my gf1.

Have any of you lot abandoned m43 in favour of the x10 or are you using the x10 to compliment existing kit?

I was going to buy a 4/3 system as a walkabout/holiday type system for when I couldn't be bothered taking the DSLR plus all the bits and pieces.

Once I saw what this thing could do it was an easy choice. Convenience and quality in one nice small package :)

Hi Jonathan,

Would you be able to advise what the lens cap holder is that you have and where to purchase from?

That looks like a really useful addition, to save losing the main cap.

Neil,

Its the Gariz leather lens cap holder, that is a self adhesive cover that sticks on to the original fuji one. That said it is well stuck on. I got it from the Bay. It is good in that I always know were the lens cap is, it does mean when taking portraits the camera can only be held in one orientation otherwise the lens cap can swing in the way of the lens.

I looked at getting M4/3 but I saw no benefit over the X10 with it max aperture and quality. HTH:)
 
I talked to an X100 owner last night, and he raised a comment about Fuji UK Customer Support.
In short - brilliant!
He had a stuck aperture blade, Fuji were totally helpful and 2 day turnaround.
Bodes well for the Sensor Replacement.....

Unfortunately though I decided to make the call to Fuji this morning as I had my first orb encounter, which is a real shame.

The guy on the phone was great though, and as Allan mentioned previously I should be hearing from them around late May regarding returning the camera for a sensor replacement.

It's on a first come first serve basis apparently, so for those considering a sensor replacement it might be worth giving Fuji a call...just to get your name on the list.

It's a cracking little camera though, I must say :)

Steelfish, I'm undergoing the same quandry myself at the moment, I'm not sure whether to add lenses to my m4/3 kit (EP2) or to switch to either the X10 or X100 which I would hope would end my lens lust!!!
 
I managed to get out with my X10 for the first time today, I'm liking it a lot, here is a ladybird i shot, i like the way his colour shows up against the bleached wood.

The obvious (or maybe assumed?) benefit of m4/3 is begger sensor size as lens quality and aperture do indeed seem good enough for me on the X10.

Whatever the shortcomings of the smaller sensor are they are not noticeable by me and the sort of shots I take.

The trouble is for me that everyone is so much better a photography than me, so I'm constantly seeing other members awesome pics then deciding I need to jump ship to a new body or lens. Still at least it keeps the classifieds ticking over with my old kit ;-)

At least with a fixed lens compact like this, as you say there's no such thing as lens envy.

Yeah thats my biggie, I've been using manual lenses but if I'm honest my EP2 isn't ideal for MF even with the viewfinder and I keep totting up the cost of a 14mm, 25mm and 45mm which isn't cheap, if I sold my kit I could put that toward an X10 or X100 and I think that would tide me over for now, ideally I'd have an X100 and a "full" DSLR Body too but I think I'd like to start with the X100.....

It's swings and roundabouts really, the Fuji case gives better protection but the Gariz case gives easy access to the battery and card.

I did not use the neck strap so the Fuji case was not held in position fully with only the wrist strap. The Gariz uses the tripod mount to securely fix to the camera.

The Gariz case also balances the camera out a bit better, especially with the flash as it is a heavier base, it also give a slightly larger area to grip the camera.

Not a cheap option for a half case though. Glad you like yours.

I bought a Gorillapod SLR with Ball Head and I think it is superb.

For people who don't like the thought of carrying a full sized tripod around everywhere, this is a great flexible (pun intended) solution.

It can grip to pretty much anything and the ball head on the Hybrid SLR gives an extra level of movement and framing options.

One thing I would say though, the stability of these things is nowhere near on a par with a traditional tripod. The Hybrid SLR is quoted as being suitable for cameras weighing up to 800grams I think. Even at this, I find myself using the self timer to avoid movement.

I'm not convinced that the version you are looking at would hold the X10 particularly stable, so I would suggest seeing if the shop will allow you to test before buying.

Definitely a good idea though.

I would use a shutter cable I have purchased for any tripod work.

I actually took a look at the different versions in a Jessops yesterday and the original doesn’t look strong enough. The SLR version is a bit big for my small case so I think I'll go halfway house and get the gorillapod hybrid. Doesn’t come in funky colours like orange but does look like it will handle the X10's weight.

I got it from Amazon, its a good fit for a medium hand and the soft wide band is comfortable to use.

I bought a Gordy's strap in black leather with a red flash. It looks good. And the leather has softened in use. It co-ordinates very well with the ladybird soft button on top.
