The Official Fuji X10/X20/X30/XF1/XQ1 Thread

...In what way do you think things are not right?

From past experience, I'd say that the lack of brilliant sunshine may be skewing the results I've been getting.

I've also been having a bit of an issue setting a custom white balance... Each time I take a shot and then go to use the WB for the next shot, the camera locks up and needs resetting! I have a feeling I may be trying to get the camera to do something it simply can't cope with.

As I said before, converting the images I've been getting into mono has resulted in some very punchy pics so it's not been a dead loss so far! :)

It has arrived!!! :D

Looking forward to having a play with it after work!

I picked up a small case for mine. The few camera shops close to home didn't have the LowePro Apex 60 as many of you have suggested however they did have a Case Logic model DCB304 that fits great and looks a lot like the LowePro. It just doesn't have the rain cover.

In addition to my questions above re focusing/IS & tripod I am wondering what you all prefer by way of straps etc. At first I didn't use any, but without a case at the time that was awkward so I put the factory strap on. But it's clumsy and I'm worried about accidentally catching it and flinging the camera on the floor where it is so light. Has anyone tried a wrist loop? I'm thinking it might be a good compromise. It would fit in the case easier and allow an easy carry while strolling around.

Also - just to share - my small Nikon SB-22 works on the X10 great (not ttl of course) and the sync speeds are amazing. Next will be to try the metz handle flash :)

Thanks everyone.

Hello everyone, another new one to the forum – but been reading it for a while.

I started off with the official Fuji full case, but decided that I didn’t like it. After looking at lots of straps/cases I chose a Gariz half case with a wrist strap. I also got a neck strap, which I use – in conjunction with the half case – in the gun-shot configuration (you don’t need a half case to use a gun-shot strap).

To see the gun-shot strap in use, go to this Gariz webpage: http://www.gariz.com/?doc=cart/item.php&it_id=1317465474

After reading this thread, I pulled the trigger and ordered an X10 today to replace my current compact camera. Should be delivered tomorrow and cost £406 delivered.

Has anyone tried using a flashgun with one of these? Is the EF20 the only reasonable choice in terms of size / performance compromise? Just wanted to get feedback on it (and maybe other choices) as I want to be able to bounce for indoor evening shots but the flash @ £125 isnt cheap at all.

Thanks

I need some help :(

I seem to be getting a common reoccurring fault with my camera. I take a few shots and then I get a read error on the memory card.

I bought a brand new card from Fuji at the same time as the camera. I have also updated the firmware to 1.03.

Really do not like the idea of only being able to take a few photos before I have to format the card!!

Any advice?

No idea if the flash is any good but has good reviews on Amazon and "only" £87.

I am wondering if the memory card is at fault? I have put another card in and suffered no card read errors yet!

Anyway, first shot, straight out of the camera (slight crop in PS) and then put on Flickr

I have the EF-20 flash, it is a bit of a compromise as the output is fairly low compared to my DSLR unit and theres no swivel, just tilt. It is usable for bounce as long as your subject is not the other side of a large room. I did try the bigger unit but it unbalanced the camera to much making the EF-20 the better choice.

I got mine from Amazon for less than a £100.

Thanks. I dont want a bigger flash exactly to your point - most of them will look huge compared to the X10 and they also take away from making it "pocketable". I am getting bored of my DSLR for the same reason - dont like lugging it around unless I know I am going to need it for definite.

Going to order the EF20!

Got it at 7.30am this morning!! Been playing with it since.

Feels very good in hand and is very well built - everything including the switches feels so solid. Coming out with some nice test shots already. Love the way you have to turn the lens to switch it on.

Offers more direct buttons for manual control than the Olympus XZ-1 - makes everything quicker to do.

Only dislike so far is that its very slow when switching to picture review mode - seems to take longer to show the picture just taken than any other camera I have owned.

Hi Rags,

Not sure whether that has got anything to do with RAW settings and/or the type of memory card. I'm using a Sandisk Extreme HD Video (30MB/s - Class 10) and when shooting JPGs (or RAW+JPG), the photo preview is almost instantaneous.

Have fun with it!

Rob

Hi Rags

I am interested if you feel it is loads better than the XZ-1 but it may take you a while to know how you feel ;)

Hi there!

One reason, why i bought the x10, dispite all the white orb discussion was this thread :) You all have shown very well what the little camera is capable. thank you very much for that.

I was looking for a small camera, especially for my trips to asia. Usually i travel with a backpack and rent a motorbike. I bought a canon s95 one year ago, but dispite its an excellent small camera it was a little bit too slow for me.

After four weeks in thailand, i am very happy with the result.
What i didnt like so much, was the AF: Very often it couldnt focus, also at daylight. Sometimes it showed a red sign of out of focus, then a green sign still out of focus and a was forced to refocus a lot.

i was (and still i am) a little bit confused from the possibilites of the camera. (an this confusion makes me slow sometimes) Shall i use L with DR400 with the disatvantage of 400iso or use M with DR400 with 100 iso...or using L with DR200? the result was alot of photos on the sd cards..especially with raw safes too... i printed now some at 20x30cm and all look fine (M and L) but i am not sure what will happen at 30x45cm with the M images.....

White Orbs where also a problem for me, because i like to go to markets at nightime and WO couldnt be avoided everytime. And unfortunately i "discovered" very late, how can i avoid time to..lets say 80 % Fortunately i found a way in postproduction not to fear them anymore ;)

Once again, thank you very much for this informative and enjoyable thread! :)

Yep - you were right. Just pulled an Extreme 3 card out of my D7000 and stuck it in the X10 and now its become rather rapid in preview mode. Its also fast with my Extreme HD card (removed from my XZ-1). Serves me right for using a crappy card in the first place!

Yes will do. Initial impressions are good. ISO performance on the X10 is a notch higher in terms of lower noise thats for sure. Definitely better built with more direct button manual controls. Prefer the menu system of the X10. Feels more expensive, better to hold and looks the part.

Broadly similar in terms of IQ in decent light - probably not much in it to be honest.

Minor disappointments -

1. No hot shoe cover included.
2. No wrist strap included
3. Neck strap side mounts and mechanism get in the way of my finger getting to the shutter button. Neck strap is a bit pointless on a camera of this size in my opinion anyway

Major disappointments -

1. Battery is puny. Post a full charge it ran out after 170 shots. Sort of knew it was weak beforehand though.
2. Flash is really puny. Definitely need the EF20.

I presume you mean while the camera is off?
When the screen is active (to take a shot) switching to playback is instant.

You can shorten the time from off to playback dramatically by enabling Quick Start Mode.
Not sure what other side effects this setting has - the manual says it shortens battery life.

Edited to add:
Whoops - it was the SD card.
Oh well - hope this comment still makes sense :)

I was also very disappointed by battery life; but give it time !!!!
It seems to get better after a few use and recharge cycles.
I now seem to be getting about 400 shots from an OEM battery which is pretty acceptable.

Reviewers have noted that by default the flash is nice and subtle.
There is a control somewhere for making the flash more prominent but I've not looked for it as I like it subtle .
They also have noted the flash is surprisingly effective for the size of camera; so probably worth trying to wind the flash balance way up and see what happens.

Amazing timing!!!!!!!
I've just found my first daytime Orb.
I was beginning to think it was just a night time thing, but I was wrong.
Does it detract from the image? No, I don't think so; but that's not the point....

Please - what's this postproduction technique you have found.
Might be useful to many other people

Taken earlier today - and I'm well chuffed......
The DSLRs we had with us never came out the bag as it was just too difficult to set up. X10 has done fantastically.

And from the same set....
Sometimes I like a nice bit of dereliction :)

Really nice shot, Duncan. Stunning really. It's got something surealistic about it. Something dreamy, and very real at the same time.

Class shot!

The only post processing was levelling up the horizon (it was slanted – I was in a hurry: long story) and a crop. Those were the true colours of the sky – an amazing evening.

Ron Martinsen makes some interesting comments on the X10. An example:

"You definitely lose the sweet bokeh found from the bigger sensor in the G1X, but the dynamic range and out-of-camera result of the X10 still impresses the hell out of me. I also still think that Fujifilm’s EXR is the greatest thing since sliced bread – all cameras should have it!"

He also reviewed the X10 on it's own...
http://www.ronmartblog.com/2011/12/review-fujifilm-x10-2011-point-shoot-of.html

One of the things he says in the X10 review sums up exactly what has happened to me on quite a few of my recent days out.
"I just got addicted to this camera and wanted to take it with me whenever I went anywhere. In fact, there were a few times where I probably should have brought out the DSLR but I chose to use the X10 because I knew I could quickly get the shot and move on. "
I should have used the DSLR on yesterday's ferns, but the X10 was so easy to take the low-level shot and the image quality is plenty good enough, so I didn't bother.

Also very interesting is his Thanksgiving group camera test.
"I have let several people, including my wife and a novice point and shoot photographer, use the X10, and everyone loves using it. Unlike the X100, it is pretty easy figure out what most of the controls do, and quickly start having success shooting. In fact, I had all four cameras from my point and shoot comparison article on the table for Thanksgiving dinner and 21 of the 25 keeper photos all came from the X10 (with everyone taking turns with all of the cameras). "
Yup - the proportion of keepers this camera produces is pretty darned impressive.

OK - glad it will hopefully get better. Am going to order a spare anyway - just good to carry one.

Flash is reasonable for an indoor filler. It is subtle and pretty decent for close range portrait shots in poorly lit rooms. Doesnt over power the subject.

I have been playing around with the image stabilisation this morning. What mode do people use generally ?

Regardless it seems a bit weak. Not a very scientific test but I have been sitting on my sofa taking hand held shots of my TV (off) at full zoom and then seeing how clear the Panasonic logo appears. Varying the shutter speed as as I go along.

The X10 is coming off slightly worse in any of the modes than the XZ-1 and quite a lot poorer than the Sony HX9V - which I even used at 16X zoom (300+ focal length) and got some amazingly clear results hand held at slowish shutter speeds.

Whilst I am pointing out a lot of negatives, I just want to make clear that I actually love this camera. It has tons going for it and its definitely a keeper. I currently have a S95, HX9V, XZ-1 and the X10 in the house so I have been playing around with them a fair bit !! The other 3 will be sold soon I reckon but might keep the Sony for the killer zoom range and as a point and shoot for the wife to use.

Agreed - IS is not one of the X10's strengths.
It's serviceable, but does not work miracles.
My old LX3 was in a different league. I would routinely expect 1/4s hand held arms length shots to be sharp.

In terms of Canon kit, the X10 is like the IS in the 24-105, whereas the LX3 is like the 70-200 f4 IS. Worlds apart.

Fortunately, the LX3 1/4s exposure were nearly always poorly lit social situations and the X10 is so much better in these circumstances that stupidly long exposures are not needed.

It was his review in combination with your reports on the X10 here at TP, Duncan, that made me fork out my hard-earned ding dongs for it :D

@Duncan

Unfortunatly my solution is not magic. For night street shots i just use dr100 and do not try to under expose...the highlights look then quite similar to other small sized sensor cameras, but thats ok when my focus is on people.

my postproduction workarround is a plugin for LR called "Star Effects" from Topaz. For White Disks caused by lightsources it works really fine ( i got even a compliment for how they are looking :) there is a 30days trial for that plugin.

i haven`t tried that by daylight WDs caused by reflections.

and...my native language is not english... so i hope its understandable what i am writing ;)
