The Official Fuji X10/X20/X30/XF1/XQ1 Thread

Here's one for Darren (urdygurdy)...

I shot this from the van window this afternoon at the top of the Tal-y-llyn pass! It wasn't very nice out there! Brrr! :)

Apart from the crop and resize, this has had no processing apart from the removal of a reflection by use of the clone tool. This is an in-camera JPEG with the film simulation set to Velvia.

You are certainly selling the Velvia mode - I like the saturation - it makes the pictures look arty. I guess though that if you choose Velvia you won't have the piccy in RAW so are stuck with the JPG?

Not so... If you choose a film simulation mode for the JPEG (Velvia, Astia etc), you can still capture the RAW file as well. :)

Best of both worlds then! :D

Do you mean it saves two versions of the picture data in camera? One in JPEG in the mode you choose and one version as RAW?
 
Can anyone recommend a decent case that won't break the bank? Chinese copies welcome...

I have 2 versions:

One is a Carry case, which you have to remove the camera from if you wish to use it, but very nicely made and will protect the camera in transit see post 284 in this thread, I also bought one of these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/170760745921?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 which is again, quite nicely made and you can leave the bottom half on whilst shooting, the top is a looser fit that the other case.

I do like the Burgandy version of the Gariz case, but the ebay one I linked to in my post is identical to the £15 in your post above, but mine was cheaper and from the UK.

Sorry - I didn't see your post until after I had finished. We posted at a similar time. Your post sloted in between my post response to Spiritflier and my camera case post to Dman. They look slightly different to me but it may just be the photos and yeah, postage from the UK anyday :)

more snow :) Im a little annoyed as my heavystar adaptor doesnt fit anymore! wether the cold has shrunk it slightly i dont know but its loose now and cant be screwed in! I did try some infra red ones but i guess that doesnt work too well with snow as they didnt process very well. Anyway, chelmsford cathedral...

I've had a quick look through this thread and it seems most people are using their x10 as a walkabout camera, shooting city and landscaped and such with it, is there anyone using their x10 to do a lot of portrait type work?

I currently have an X100 (which I love) and I've sold most of my DSLR gear, the only stuff I'm hanging onto is a 5D body and a 100mm macro lens for when I need/want to shoot portaits or just anything that needs a longer focal length.

I'm seriously thinking of ditching them though and getting an x10 instead but given that I have experience of the x100 focus system I'm a bit worried about nailing focus on eyes and the like.

I still have a couple Canon Speedlights and radio triggers which I'd keep as they can be used with the Fuji cameras.

It depends on what you mean by 'a lot' but the X10 is certainly capable of turning out decent portraits using off camera flash.

As you can see, Speedlites and generic triggers work fine... Would I ditch my 5DMKII for the X10 though? Absolutely not! :D

That image is certainly sharp enough!

I just don't use my 5D and it's a lot of money sitting there depreciating.

I'm thinking that the x10 would get a lot more use, plus it's probably cost me less than half of what I'd get for my 5D and 100mm so the other money could buy me a spare Hexar and a load of film.
 
I had the opportunity to use my X10 in the studio last week, but in the heat of the shoot, I forgot!!

I promise to use it on my next portrait shoot in the studio!
 
This thread has seriously tempted me.

I was set on the Canon S95 but now I am really tempted by this! Which camera will give me results closer to my D300? I love sharp images. Most of the sample shots in here look very sharp, but some do seem soft. Is that just a hit and miss thing with the auto mode on the X10?

It's very hard to gauge sharpness from web size images; it's more to do with how the image is resized. Some of the online photo sharing sites are notoriously bad.
Without looking back to check, the only soft image I can think of in this thread is the 100% crop I posted of a high ISO landscape. You wouldn't be the first to assume that was the whole frame and go 'yuck' :)

Last Saturday I went on a full-on landscape photography day to the Forest of Dean helping a photo buddy with their MA project re-tracing images taken by Fay Godwin.
Despite lugging my 5DII, 24 TSEII and tripod around all day, I only used the X10.
It's the first time I've done this in good conditions when the 5DII could have been used, and it's a bit of an experiment.
I forced the X10 to only use RAW at ISO 100; there is loads of highlight and shadow detail capable of being recovered and the images suffer none of the noise introduced by DR at ISO 400.
I'm really pleased with the images and so far have shown them to two photographers. One assumed I'd used the 5DII because the tones are beautiful and the detail at 100% is way better than needed to print to A3.
I'd estimate the richness of texture at 100% is getting on for a 5DII shot viewed at 100% taken with good tripod technique; I know the 5DII has double the pixels so it's not a direct comparison, but it's more than good enough for any purpose I'm going to use the images for.

Why am I doing this?
I feel there are two styles of landscape photography - the impulsive shot that 'feels right', and the carefully composed images that come from using tripods, grads, etc to deliberately slow down the process of capturing the image.
A lot of my most successful images have fleeting light that only lasts seconds. There's no time for thinking as it's a magical instant when everything comes together.
These moments make powerful images. To capture these images often means carrying the camera in the hand, turned on with the lens cap off.

In the past I've often said that the 5DII has made tripod use a creative decision.
I'm finding the X10 has pushed this idea even further, the quality compromise is not that great and I'm loving the freedom.
 
I've started only carrying the Mamiya C330f with 80mm and 180mm lenses a meter and a couple of rolls of film and the X10. Not too much to carry and quite versatile.
 
Should I be worried about the horror stories of past Fuji cameras in the past with their failing sensors?

I know of a few people that work in Jessops who have been scared for life after seeing a fair few Fuji's come back in after a year with dead sensors. I have been victim to this in the past as well with a point and shoot going to the camera shop in the sky!

You post x10 users now get a progeameable raw button. It was us x100 users that have been shouting for this since day 1!
 
Wow - Orb issue fix/reduction. This is what I've been waiting for. Would anyone, after they make the firmware update, be kind enough to point the x10 at an evening city scape scene and share the photo?
 
havnt tried it yet but judging by the great wailing and gnashing of teeth on the dpreview site it hasnt done a lot to fix that :) Wasnt that worried by it in the first place though tbh. I do like the other little tweaks though.

Nothing ever satisfies the dpreview mob.
I occasionally dip in there to see what the latest moan is about, but I don't find their forums as useful as they used to be.
I reckon they need to get out more often :D
 
god its an awful place, i always come out of there feeling like i need a wash. It just seems to be full of people who buy gear simply to criticise it!

not at all like this place which seems to be like your fave pair of knackered old slippers.
