The Official Fuji X10/X20/X30/XF1/XQ1 Thread

Have been looking for a neck strap which is pliable and not leather. Came across this and wondered if anyone here uses one? I use a wrist strap with the mini QD connector so will be easy to change over as and when required.

Have a look a the OP/Tech mirrorless sling which, like the wriststrap, only needs the single mini-QD fastener on your camera. Ah, too late. Never mind, I'll leave the link for anyone else interested.

Thanks for that. That looks very interesting but if not using a wrist strap I prefer the camera to be on my chest.

It's odd. At first it felt clunky and awkward, I was expecting an x30 with interchangable lenses, but it just didnt feel as easy or as snappy. The added dial, wheel, and different button layout significantly changed the experience.
After spending some time on it, it feels much better now. The lack of PASM was weird to get over, instead you switch each function from auto to manual to give you those modes...

Image-wise, it's amazing. Everything I hoped and more. My old Canon (and x30) struggled at iso1600, this is perfectly usable at 3200. I've never had anything over 12mp so the extra crop is great.
The kit lens is fantastic. All metal, very sharp, reasonably fast, good AF, quiet, with outstanding IS. When they say 4-5 stops of IS, they mean it!

It is however, larger as a package. I still have the x30 and I know I need to sell it, but part of me won't let it go. It just feels quicker, snappier, more ready all the time.
The x-t10 is amazing, but the wide end of the x30 and the faster lens sure count for something, and I REALLY miss the macro function on the x-t10.

Tl;Dr I want them both :(

Thanks for sharing that. My brother in law has one and likes it a lot - but it's one of a great number of cameras he owns! I have a lot to learn yet about the X30 and can't see me selling it in the foreseeable future, unless an X40 appears on the horizon! An all in one package suits me now.

@jimmyjamjojo

Buy the XC50-230 instead, all Fuji glass is good, it's just that the 50-230 is in a plastic body rather than a metal one, it may well be more balanced on the X-T10, as it's a lot lighter. Also has more reach. That way you can keep the X30
Thanks, but my xf 50-200 arrives tomorrow!
Good point on xc lenses though, maybe i'l grab a wide prime if there are any, though the samyang 12mm looks tough to beat and relatively cheap.

Ok what extras do i need to buy for a fuji x30 apart from the 40 mm stepup ring,is the hood necessary and i have a neweer manual flash that will work though rather large and heavy . Batteries, any decent subs for the fuji or would an original be better in long term,
Thanks

On the polarising filter Any thought should i just buy the 40.5mm so taking the stepup ring off or go for the 49 mm ,i already have 2 49 mm nd filters but no polariser hence my question? Thanks

I wouldnt worry about a battery, they last ages. If you insist though I bought an ex-pro battery for the x-t10 and it seems great!
As for filters, it makes sense to keep them all same size, less faffing about when changing.
The hood is as useful as any other. Not noticable unless there is stray light hitting the lens, then it is a lifesaver.

A lens hood is always necessary; it's probably the most important accessory.
I really can't be bothered with manual flash. I was near the front of the queues when auto then TTL flash became available and I have no desire to go backwards. Get yourself a Nissin i40 and be happy.
I have EX-Pro and Chilli Power batteries and both makes are good.
If you're going to use accessory filters then I'd get them to fit the step-up ring as you get a much wider choice of good quality items. There very few options at 40mm and only one of the recognised filter manufacturers.

can i put a step up ring directly onto the fuji x30 lens a 40-49 to allow me to use an ND filter? SRB sell them

I've got one of these from SRB, Chris. They work fine... except that it completely changes the feel of using the lens; I find the step up ring gets in the way. Of course, you can't put the lens cap on, so either you're carrying it "naked" or popping a 49mm clip-on cap. Luckily I have one that doesn't say "Pentax"! And now it won't go in a pocket....

When you need it, it's great, but it is close to a PITA I think.

EDIT: I have a 40mm UV filter from Marumi, not sure if they still sell it. Otherwise, it's pretty hard to find 40mm filters. I'd be worried that 40.5mm filters might jam on the threads...

Interesting, Jonathan. I have a X10 and in 3 years have never used a lens hood (I don't own one). Never noticed any lack of quality in the shots. What am I missing?

Like Chris, I don't use a hood on my baby Xs. I do however usually shade the front element with my left hand when there's a chance of flare.

Was only wanting to use the nd filters and polariser occasionally so may just carry them when i need them and go standard rest of time ie only put step uo ribg wen needed

I leave a hood fitted permanently - first line of defence if you knock the lens against anything as well as for its intended purpose.

Just been trying out the Adv mode on the X10, and set to Pro Focus. Seems like pretty good results, pity not able to pick focus point.

When I'm not actually shooting, the lens is retracted and behind a flower/petal style cap that opens as the lens pushes through it. Sorry, can't remember the brand, although I'm pretty sure it came through Amazon.

I have one from jjc, but dont use it as it doesnt work with the Uv filter attached. Plus it felt as though the petals could bend back and rub the lens if it were awkwardly rested on in a pocket\bag.

When Jimmy says keep the filters the same size, he probably means get a step up ring. I have a 40-52mm ring that allows me to use all my old 52mm filters. 52mms are common and fairly cheap to buy so that's not a bad route to take.

Yes i understood him,i have 2 49 mm filters so will get the 40-49mm and get a polarizer to go with the 6 and 10 stop nd's

Adobe DNG Converter is free.

That still only produces a DNG file.
Which still needs working on in some way. But can be useful if you only have an older version of Photoshop, or the like, that cannot be updated to handle X30 raw files.

Still tempted by an X30 as a go everywhere camera when I don't want a full set up.
